Most folks seem to really like the factory headgasket. It's a multi layer steel(MLS) gasket.

The HG in that ebay auction probably is a MLS. But why risk buying it on eBay when you get buy a new one from a store for about the same price?

Go with the factory MLS gasket. Just splurge and buy it from Satan. $70 bucks is about right.

55887, About the Cometic gasket... Posted by The1Bill, Sep-09-03 04:12 PM
The Cometic (the one on E-Bay) is used with enormous success in every other car enthusiast market out there. The only issues that I know of with that gasket is that it needs a **REALLY** smooth surface on the block to mate with. I would get the block cut perfectly flat before using that, and polishing the mating surface. The 4G63 is too grainy to use it with 100% success without being cut, cleaned, and polished. If installed properly on a properly prepared motor, this gasket will never fail. -=B-=

and the only way that you can be 100% sure that the block is smooth and flat enough is to have it machined. is there any other way that you can be sure that your block is perfectly flat? how much does it cost to have your block machined perfectly flat?

Make sure when you go to Satan you are actaully getting the MLS OEM HG. After having HG problems with the 420a the OEM HG was changed a while back to the current MLS. Sorta one of those recalls that never became a recall. I bet 10 bucks some Satan dealers still have the "old" ones lying around. Make sure you are actually getting the new one!
