ive seen so many complaints about the cartech fmu, but isnt there anything you can do to make it work, or has anyone had good luck with it.....i can get one for $75 compared to 300 for the vortech and i want to waste money if the cartech will work. Another question while im on here, is there a writeup on how to adjust the 14b stock internal wastegate to 5psi.... thanks

the rising rate and the idle pressure of the cartech is like the stock market. it goes up and down depending on absolutely nothing at all. at least, that's how mine worked. there are a lot of other people on the board who have had the same problems. Bill Hahn Jr. still defends the regulator and claims that it's good, blah blah blah... this is one of the few times that i disagree with Mr. Hahn himself.

don't skimp on your fuel pressure regulator, unless you want to randomally and accidently run lean. the cartech belongs in one place IMO, the trash can. however, i have found a lot of good uses for it, but i'm not going to post them. too shady IMO.

anyways, get a S-FMU. i have one. i like it a lot. i too thought it was a bit overpriced, but i bit the bullet. you won't regret it. it's a very well made piece of equipment. ask anyone else on the board, they will tell you the same thing: the S-FMU basically kicks ass.

the Aeromotive FPR is an excellent regulator as well, but it's not typically used with a 4 injector setup. get an 8 injector setup and you'll be using it.

that was another question i had, is there any other kinds out there other than the cartech and vortech?

UFO toy for children (aka turbo8u) :thumbsup
boat anchor
when attached to some type of chain it can be used as a medieval weapon.


As you can see from my list I have had no luck with that piece of crap. Every time I started the car it was a different story on pressure. Grab back imo. During highway cruising it wasnt very uncommon for my static pressure to drop...:wary

I never had any problems with my Cartech. My pressures were always fine but keep in mind I had only used it for about 4 months before jumping on the S-FMU bandwagon. I heard the thing starts crapping out after about a year, but I think that was just from most of the guys here in the forums.

I have never tried this, but supposedly, you can get the blue diaphram that the SFMU uses, and cut to fit into the Cartach. And then it works perfectly. I'd love to try it and see if it indeed works. The diaphrams in the Cartach are really crappy...

the most common things i've heard about it is that you adjust the fuel pressure the night before, then wake up to start the car and the fp is all over the place.

the only good result i had with the cartech is selling it for 150 on ebay, new never used.

i bought a used sfmu from timrs for 215 and i must say the fp is rock solid. i have a digital fp gauge and rock solid readings with idle always being the same, and wot the same static the same. there are no weird, wide variations what-so-ever.

i really don't understand the logic in mr hahn defense because even in Maximum Boost  when corcy bell discusses fuel, he says something to the effect that a well designed turbo kit must have solid fp settings (NOT THE EXACT WORDS, SOMEONE LOOK IT UP, I AM TOOOO LAZY). that part pretty much convinced me to go with the sfmu.

so in all, i didn't install the cartech on my car. i think some profession shops can mod it to actually hold the fp. i think that phrenzy still use the cartech but the shop had to take it apart to actually make it work.

oh and one last thing, fuel is the most important thing in turbo setup. you want the best or say hello to engine rebuild.

He probably defends the cartech because Corky Bell himself does. Hell, Cartech is Corky Bell's own company. Don't believe me?

I do know that they had an issue with some of their needle valves, which resulted in outsourcing that part. I think that an overhaul would fix most of the problems, as the overhaul kit includes the new needle valve and a new seat.

Jamesman helped me do the SFMU diaphragm swap on my cartech, using the second generation cartech billet FPR. I think I'm the only one to have done that. It worked MUCH better, but far from perfect. We also made our own shims from stainless sheet instead of that shitty foil they have in there. We also tried various bleeder valves, and porting the tiny air passages. I was never happy with it. Take one apart and you'll understand. Its junk.

But I can proudly say I've gotten GREAT results from my Cartech: I got $130 for it on Ebay! :9

so these are the only two fmu that we can use?.... does anyone know of a place to get the vortech for cheap? (cheaper than $290 from summit)

my cartech worked fine on 10 psi for about 6 months, then gave me some problems with leaking fuel pressure and stuff. i dont know why hahn uses it....but thats beyond me

I've ran the Cartech from day one. A year turbo to be exact. No issues with it fuel that I could say it was definately the FPR. Of course I've had many other issues, so one less is OK by me. Also V aka DSMRoadster ran it for awhile, until recently that he got the SFMU. I will be running 30lbs with it. See how it goes, if it doesn't work out I will also get the SMFU soon. ;)
