55163, Buy new head or just get turbo cams? Posted by 1FastEclipse, Aug-30-03 10:45 AM
I am getting a whole new engine from VT engines and I noticed they can do complete heads for about 1500. My question is, is it that much of a power difference to get one of those heads over just merely putting turbo cams in? Cams run 400, that means the difference is 1100 dollars. You guys think I should do the upgraded head or just stick with cams? Thanks
Here is the link, it is the first head for 1549 http://www.fasterthanyou.com/4g63_heads.cfm

Cams can be done without removing the head. Porting, valve, and valve guide replacement cannot. I would do the head, put in fresh guides, fresh valvestem seals, port the head, and install oversized valves. You can worry about the cams later on, as it will only cost the extra 30 dollars or so for the valve cover gasket. -=B-=

I know I can worry about the cams later on but won't putting in new cams make a bigger power gain with the turbo then just head work without cams?

IS there anything that will break in the head under boost if I don't redo the entire head?

I talked to the people about this at blackdog motorsports and they told me that unless you running 30psi and are trying to squeeze every last horsepower out of that engine it is not worth it. They told me my biggest gain would be from cam gears. My suggestion is to get the cams and gears. However, I would replace your springs with better ones If you do put cams in.

While having my engine rebuilt by rpmsrons.com they ported polished and milled my head they also put titanium springs as well as new lifters etc. the thing is smooth.. you should see how much they choped out that head.... they said the biggest disadvantage to our engines is the ports are soooo small... compared to yeah yeah honda's and the 4g63, however, i haven't run my engine yet so i can't tell you how well this thing is going to run but i am sure excited to find out...

Even with our small ports, our heads still outflow even the 1G 4g63 head :+

If you have the time and money, now would be the time to put whatever you want in that thing. If you have high mileage you might as well at least get a complete valve job done and throw in some springs etc. They are not that expensive. Why take it apart two or three times when you can get it done in one shot. Although I dont have a LOT of money thats what I did while the motor was out.
Just food for thought.

I just read somewhere that our head will outflow the 4g63 and honda b-series engines. Also solar let us know how the head runs. How much did it cost?

Look on HRC's site and they say that they left the head completely stock up to and I think past 400hp. Said that our heads were designed in part by Lotus. I have always heard that they flow very well and thats why I decided not to port anything but upgrade a few parts here and there and get a fesh valve job.
