55048, Would you consider VTEC as forced induction?
Posted by Hamgumball, Aug-28-03 07:34 PM
Alright, it ticks me off whenever I hear my friends say yeup, my CRX runs mid 14's all motor. What's worse is that they say its "stock", when they did an engine swap. I think the real all motor beasts are the 1.3l Rx-7's.

Anyways, with Vtec, there's an extra lob on the camshafts. And when a solenoid is engaged, it kicks the extra lob to lift the cams higher and in turn forcing more air into the engine. What do you guys think?

I know the same goes with VVTI for toyota, and MIVEC for mitsubishi's, even the new RX-8 has their version of varieable valves. I'm not just talking about just Vtec, varieable valve timing in general.

Niether n20 or vtec is forced induction. It's not a matter of opinion, it's facts.

VTEC is forced reduction.

...Reduction to a small speck in the rearview. :+

well if I put cams in my eclipse I have vtec all the time :P I don't think its forced induction, all you doing is pushing the valves up to get more air sucked in. Keyword is suck.

Now turbo, nos, and supercharged creates boost, it actually crams vast amounts of air into the combustion chamber creating more power.

Thge simply answer - absolutely not. It isn't forced induction, whatever the ricers may think.

No man. Its just cams.

Cams have a power range. When you only have one profile, then manufacturers like to put a descent amount of power on the lower end. You can get more power by using a race cam, but you have to keep the revs up to see the power.

Deffinately not, you're just changing when the valves open and close, thats all. Nothing is being forced at all.

forced induction = postive pressure.

VTEC or any other form of variable valve timing does not create positive pressure. Neither does Nitrous.

vtec is boost didnt u guys know that? this thingy opens and lets in this other thing that spins and goes up and down and around all over the place really fast, so fast u cant see it and makes this thing that makes boost that make su go vroooom, thats why hondas make that sound....that annoying sound, its the thingy inside goin around and schtuff

vtec is a variable valve timing...like ferrari's, toyota's, etc.. its not forced induction

didnt the boost gauge rise when they sprayed in TFTF? lol.

vtec in no way, shape or form is forced induction.

ever driven a turbo car with nitrous???? the boost gauge DOES rise, quickly, lol.

Nitrous isnt "technically" FI, as it doesnt involve pressurized air. But, it gets to the same end effect, only doing it chemically. i wouldnt consider a nitrous car FI....but it isnt exactly NA anymore wither.

um..sorry to burst your bubble but the rx8 doesn't have valves. They just have a multiple manifold length set-up that acts sort of "LIKE" valves. Rotories don't have valves at all.

No VTEC isn't a force induction.

Nitrous is an exception to both of those. It's just well...NOS LOL.

Why does everyone have to hate agianst VTEC motors? I think it's a great idea.

Hell if I can have say a mild crane cam for lower RPM and a RACE cam for above 4-5k rpm's I'd do it before you can say "VTEC HONK" lol.

Variable valve timing is a technolgoy designed to retain low end driveabiity and a flat torque curve used by almost every manufacturer today in some shape or form. To achieve similar power as a car without variable valve timing, get a nice cam setup.

I never like the blanket statement 'VTEC motor' as it really means nothing. Honda uses VTEC in the economy motors for improved mpg. It is just a technology.

to the starter on post, rx8 doesn't use any type of variable valve timing because there are no valves in a rotary engine.
Vtec and nos aren't forced induction.

Road and Track talk about a high power intake system, where they use the term variable valves. Their talking about three intake ports that open at different RPMs.
