54646, Any interest in custom welded 1G SMIC piping set for HRC kits? Posted by XtremeRS, Aug-23-03 10:00 AM
Well after my new MIG welder purchase,(see my post in PITS) and also with a few 2.5" downpipe projects going on, i am contemplating doing some custom welded 1G SMIC piping. I would use mandrel bends, 2" turbo to IC inlet, and 2.25" IC outlet to TB. I would probably supply couplers and clamps. Painting may be an option also, dont know yet. Before i give any good price estimates, would this be something people would be interested in? I would try and keep the price at 200 or less for the set, but still not sure exactly what all the cost on parts will be or the labor involved. Painting can be an option too, but would cost more because of extra materials and labor. What you guys think? I believe it would be a great option for the HRC guys, who dont want to buy the stage 2 kit with IC. You could save several hundred bucks for sure..

I would be very interested. I've given up on getting custom piping made and have been saving the $800 for the HRC stage 2 upgrade because nowhere around here will make piping for me. A 1G sidemount is sitting on my floor in my room and I even have the top inlet customized so it's more vertical than diagonal. But yeah I'd be really interested.

Yeah, also, the SMIC will have to be mounted like it is on my car, which i believe is the easiest, and most logical way to mount it for the piping. Pics and simple instructions can be provided for that i suppose. If i paint them, i will prob do a high temp, gloss black paint. I cant powder coat it, so thats not an option. I can make up 2 different price guidlines, one for painted, and one for unpainted, if people want to have their own paint schemes or chrome dipping or whatever..I will do the first prototype on my car, so it fits perfectly, and make the rest from there.

Would you guys want these painted or not? They would be painted high temp gloss black. I'm thinking of doing 200.00 for the set of 2 pipes, painted, 2 couplers, and 4 clamps. You will be able to use the TB coupler that comes in the HRC kit, as well as the turbo outlet coupler, and HRC supplied clamps. For couplers, I will prob use heavy duty radiator hose, this is what i use, and workd great. It helps make a good seal at the IC inlet and outlets, because they are like 1 7/8" O.D. pipes, mating to the 2" and 2.25" IC pipes. The hose can compress much better and seal than silicone couplers with that pipe size difference. Now i'm no professional painter, so it wont look like HRC's nice powercoating, but it will look as good as I can get it. I'll use an air compressor and spray gun if i can find that paint by the pint/quart. I'll try and have the prototype set make up on my car within 2-3 weeks or so, and from there can build them to order. I'll keep you guys updated when the time arrives, for more details, payments, ect..I will also get a pic up of the prototype set.

Personaly would prefer unpainted. Let us know when, most of us are even ready now! Nick 97RS

Hows 175 unpainted, and 200 painted,+ shipping? I'll be ordering a bunch of piping this week, so hopefuly i can get started on the prototype set in a week or two. I still have to get a few 2.5" DP projects finished first, then i can concentrate on these. Hopefully in 2-3 weeks, i can have some ready to go. Like i said though, i'll keep you guys informed, and provide pics when i get it done. As for how fast i can do them, well that depends on if i have all the piping and hardware ready to go. I will make the first set on my car, then make a set just tack welded together to use as the main JIG, then make the finished sets. I can prob make a few sets of them a night i suppose. I do work full time, and have a house to keep up, so this will be done in my spare time, which is usually during the evening/nights.

Your price sounds more than fair. I was worried that I'd get some moron at the muffler shop to screw up stuff like the opening for the BOV and stuff but if someone with the setup actually on their car made it then rock on.

Yeah, i'm not in it to make tons of money, i just want to give some more options to the turbo guys who maybe cant afford the HRC stage 2 kit, and want a cheaper alternative. Plus i have fun making this stuff and its fun welding :) I had a muffler shop make my piping, and i have never been happy with it. It was press bent 2" pipe, which goes down to 1.75" at the press bends..thats not good. I will also use the same pipe fitting for the BOV as HRC uses. It will fit the stock BOV's, and also most Turbo XS BOV's and whatever ones can fit onto the 1.25" OD pipe section flange.
