5428, Just gettin the ball rollin
Posted by GS_Newbie, May-22-01 03:59 AM
To start off, I'm new to the board as of today, but have been reading it for about a month. I've decided that I want to put a turbo on and I'd like to do it myself but I'm somewhat new to engine mods. I've researched the topic quite a bit and I'm confident that I can do it but I was wondering what kit is gonna have the best instructions to do so.

Also, I'm not going to be using my car on the track so I dont really need insane amounts of boost. What I'm thinking about doing is possibly going with the HRC Stage II and running it around 5-7 psi. I know that I can get about the same boost without the intercooler but from what I can gather, it will be better for the motor with an intercooler. Am I on the right track here? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW there is no way that I would be doing this without this board. Its sweeeeet bein able to get info from you guys. Thanx

Yeah, you're on the right track. But I don't think you'll be able to run 5psi on a HRC Stage II. If I'm not mistaken they come with a 7 pound spring, which means 7psi of boost is the minimum. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

He could do one of two things...1) ask Bill to include a stage 1 wastegate with his stage 2 purchase or 2) buy a boost controller of somesort, then he could go down as low as the wastegate will allow(5psi im guessing?) only drawback is that he would also be able ot boost as HIGH as he would want at anytime, and we all know what can happen then...:-)

Actually, that is not true. The "stock" wastegate spring IS the lowest you can go. That means if the wastegate is set for 5, that's the lowest you can set your boost to with or without a boost controller. If it's set to 7, again, that's the lowest you will ever be able to go without switching out the wastegate.

In the HRC stage 2, you probably can request a stage 1 wastegate (5 psi) and later use a boost controller to up your boost to whatever you like. That's the wastegate I have, and currently I boost 8 lbs. In the present, I'm currently nicely tuned at the high end, however, with all the ample fuel, I believe I could be a beter tuned at the low end (1 - 4k RPM's)

I installed the Hahn Racecraft Stage II kit myslef WITH a front-mount intercooler. The instructions manual is pretty complete, and I am pretty sure that *any* question you have can be answered for you here.

I had never done anything like this before (the most I had done before was install some headers on my honda...)

If you want to take your time to do the install though, I would advise you to have alternative means of transport during the install (in case you need to rush out and get something).

Good luck, and keep us updated

I have a Star Stage 1 kit (gonna install it tommorow :) )and it comes with a Turbonetics Delta Wastegate. You can adjust boost also by adjusting the load screw on the wastegate. It sez you can adjust from 2-3 psi maximum over the wastegates presetting. I think you can go back 1 or 2 psi also, but I wouldn't know because I haven't installed the kit yet. Just something to think about.

I don't know what the HRC kit comes with, I think it's already built into the turbo or something. You should wait till the New Edge Racing Turbo kit comes out, especially if it has good instructions, because the Star Kit has awful instructions, if Wyatt's site didn't have supplemental instructions I would be confused right now @_@ (more pictures and colored accurate pictures would be nice) In my opinion though the Star Kit is better than the HRC kit, just I think the HRC has better instructions, you can get a good deal from Wyatt too, but I heard the New Edge Racing kit is like the Star Kit with all the problems taken out of it.
