5403, HRC KIT DOESNT PROVIDE ENOUGHT FUEL PRESS. FOR MORE THAN 8lbs
Posted by E_ME_2, May-21-01 01:01 PM

This weekend I took my car for its first run..I finally hit 800miles and felt it was safe to boost up.

So im going at a slight incline at 8psi...at about 6200 rpm in third gear..my egt reads about 1610F...so I figure I guess I'll turn up the pressure about half a turn...just to be safe. So I do...and then notice that I only have another 1/8 of a turn before the end..no more play on the riser.

Even after that im still floating about 1590-1600F in third at 6500 rpm. ????

How much play do you all still have on your risers ?

**does it matter that my stock pump went out and im only running the HRC pump ? Could I be running too rich and thats the reason for my temp. ?

WHAT SHOULD I DO ????

It might be a little premature to state that the fuel problem is a direct result of an HRC design... These fuel setup for their kits have proven to be able to support atleast 10psi... Maybe HRC can shed some light on your dilema... just my 2 cents... don't take my critism the wrong way. I just don't want any negative comments made toward such a strong supporter of our cars...

The HRC kit is designed to run with both the stock pump and the inline that is provided with the kit. Running only one of the required pumps is dangerous, and not the way it is meant to be run. You need that in-tank pump to give the required amount of fuel for more than 8lbs. Like they say, 2 pumps are better than 1.

How much is the stock pump new ?? And another thing...I dont have my relay anymore either..The HRC pump is running by itself...just straight as if it were stock.

What should I do ?

the reason fo rhte temps is because you are running too lean. If your stock pump is dead, it is not flowing as much fuel to the HRC pump as needed, and will eventually damage your hrc pump from starvation. the factory pump is just a restriction if it isn't flowing any fuel.

Bring it on............

dude...yes it does matter that your stock pump went out. You absolutely need both pumps working to get the fuel delivery out of the high fuel pressure demands.

Your egt's will be plenty low once you get an intank working model! Any 2g DSM FWD will work!

PLEASE don't boost very much at all until you get the intank working! (certainly not at 8lbs. of boost)

8 lbs of boost is a LOT in my opinon for a S-16g!

and so we cont to learn and blow up. you might want to fix that ASAP. I dont know how much a stock fuel pump is but a direct replacement high flow pump can be had for as little as $100 and no more than $200ish. Too easy a fix to be driving around like that

how does the HRC fuel system work? Is it like two fuel pumps daisychained together? My auto teacher said if I hooked mine up like that it wouldn't work too well, the more powerful pump would just mess up the stock pump or something like that.

Yes, please take the advice of the folks on this board, and run the fuel system as intended, in both pump arrangement and wiring. Using both pumps is a good way to go, if only because it is our tested and proven setup.

Experimentation with different combos is best left to those who can fully explore the ramifications of the changes through experience and instrumentation, or don't mind going into the engine to repair the effects of said experimentation, or both! Let our successful efforts be your guide. Throwing the dice is for when you go to Vegas, not when you are having fun with your car!

Hades: With all due respect to the auto teacher, auxiliary pump setups such as we use are a proven method, also used by many other forced-induction companies. It works so well because pump output is directly related to the pressure being maintained: with all EFI fuel pumps, the more pressure they must maintain, the more their output in volume (LPH, GPM, etc.) is reduced. With this in mind, your stock fuel pump can actually flow 500 HP of fuel at zero fuel pressure. But what good does that do...can't get the job done with zero pressure, right?

When we install a strong auxiliary pump such as our ACCEL unit, the pressure between the stock pump and our unit becomes just that: zero! Since the bigger pump flows more fuel than the stocker, the stocker can never actually build pressure in the fuel system between the pumps. The best part is, they help each other: the stocker eliminates any suction losses the auxilary pump might see without it, and the auxiliary pump makes sure that adequate fuel pressure AND (pay attention, this is the important part!) adequate FUEL FLOW exist at those higher boost pressures.

Works for us on our 11.7 second, 122 MPH Street RS, so it will work for anyone making up to that kind of HP. Something else to keep in mind: our RS uses only 70 PSI fuel pressure (our 1:1 FPR and DFI fuel control system replace the high gain regulator) @ 25 PSI boost. As a result of the lower pressure, we are not working the pump as hard as you Stage II fellows do at over 100 PSI. I bring this up to point out that should you think a 475 HP capable fuel system is too much for you Stage I and II guys, you must remember that at 100 plus psi, it is not a 475 HP capable setup. At 100-110 PSI, it's good for about 350 HP. Of course, in HRC practice, we replace the VROG and triple digit fuel pressure when we achieve high HP levels (Stage III-V).

Heres the deal, the guy you installed my Turbo system....threw out the relay because he didnt think it was necessary and also, he didnt hook up my stock fuel pump. So Im not really sure if I even have a stock pump in the tank, or if its working ?? Should I order the relay and put it in and re-hook up the stock fuel pump ? is there another way to run both pumps ? Someone please send me a schematic or pictures of how to hook up the two pumps ?

ex> ----{hrc pump}----engine (do I hook them up inline where I run the stock pump directly into the hrc pump and then out to car ?? Do I have to have the relay or will this setup work ??

If your HRC pump is correctly installed like it says in the directions, all you need to do is install the stock fuel pump in the tank and you are ready to go. Hopefully you still have the stock fuel pump in the tank but it is just disconnected. Otherwise, you need to get a new pump. Like everyone said, do not boost. In fact, I would turn the boost down as low as it can go. You are in a dangerously lean condition.

If you find that the pump is not there, head to a junkyard and pull one from a 2G FWD dsm. Much cheaper than ordering through satan.

As an inexpensive alternative to a new stock pump, you could also use an aftermarket in-tank such as the Walbro. By itself, it is not sufficient, but it will work well when used in conjunction with our in-line pump.

Should you need assistance in restoring the remainder of the system, call me on our Tech Support line (630-801-9065) and I can aid you. You will need the original instruction manual; we can get you another copy if you no longer have it.
