53871, 30lb. Injector Tuning Posted by Eclipse2NR, Aug-11-03 08:28 PM
Hey guys,
Finaly got most of my turbo stuff in the mail... while I'm waiting for my fuel rail and downpipe, I figured I'd make some turbo install "crib-sheets" to help the install go a bit easier. First thing that comes to mind are my fuel pressures. I got a set of 30# injectors sitting right here next to me, along with a SFMU. I have a package of 3 rings, and 3 discs, and a dark spring. I believe the wastegate on this T3 here is set to about 6 psi. So in everyone's experiances, what disc/ring combination turned out to be the best rising rate for the 30 pounders and 6-8 psi of boost? I didn't happen to get my instruction manual with my SFMU, and Vortech's site isn't working correctly at this moment, so all help would be appreciated. I found a thread on this exact setup a long time ago, but searching for an hour yielded nothing I can really use. I wonder if my new fuel rail will alter the pressures much... Thanks in advance guys.

Well, I don't know what happened to the rest of that post ^^^^ b/c everythng I go to it on my screen all the text is there, but not when I post it. Oh well, I'll just re-write it for you ....
I'll post something up here to make you feel better, but I can't answer all of your question b/c I'm not running a Vortech SFMU. I'm running 30lb injectors as well, but at 10lbs of boost. I don't think you'll have to adjust your fuel pressure settings very much if your only running 6lbs of boost. If anything, set your idle FP for low 40's and then monitor it under boost after install. That should be a good starting point for 30lb injectors. You'll know when the fuel is right b/c she'll run nice and smooth.

2.72" disk/ring, long silver spring, idle fuel pressure around 20-22 psi. This will be very close to what you need. Use the bleed valve option on the SFMU to fine tune your boosted fuel pressure rise rate.

Thank you XtremeRS... you are, as usual, most helpful. However, Vortech decided I don't need the 2.72" disc, just the ring, so I guess I'll have to call them up and tell them otherwise.

I am running 310cc, walbro 255, and boosting 8psi intercooled.
I just tried this setup and before I was running the largest disk and no ring with the long silver spring. My idle fp was 30psi and my wot fp was 80psi. I was getting slight hesitations when initially hitting boost, not all the time though. Only when slowly going into boost would I see the hesitations. I have the missing link and I have cleaned it out and it is fine.
I just installed the 2.72 disk/spring combo with the silver spring and my fp dropped to about 15-16psi at idle and I have not taken it out to see what the WOT fps would be due to the fact of not having a wbo2 and not wanting to run lean.
I tried adjusting the screw at the top, but it did not effect the fp at all. I backed it way out and turned it way in and nothing.
I know this would be better/easier if I had the bleed valve, but I don't.
What should be my next step? Is it ok to be idling at 15psi with this setup or will I possibly run the chance of going lean if I boosted it hard?

2.72 should be close to perfect for 310cc. I wouldn't worry about running lean. Replace the silver spring with the dark one and see if you can adjust idle pressure. You're going to want around 20psi idle pressure.

Ok I replaced what I think was the 2.72 disk ring combo. I measured the disk and it wa about 2 3/4 so I assume its the right disk, and the ring for it was slightly wider, but not much. Ok so I install it and I use the tall silver spring and I was running really lean. It would not let me adjust the idle fp with the set screw. By going all the way up and down with the set screw I got nothing. So you think with the 2.72 disk/ring combo and the dark spring I will be able to adjust the fp to 20psi and not run lean?
BTW is the ring for the 2.72 disk slightly bigger?
I will try this after work today and let you know what I come up with. I will take pics of the disks/rings I am installing too!
Thanks for helping out sike!

Yeah the 2.72 disc is loose inside the ring. How do you know it was running lean with the silver spring? You should be able to adjust the pressure with any disc/spring combo. If you were running lean, you may possibly have a different fuel problem. What are your fuel pressures at 6 PSI?

Wait the 2.72 disk fits inside the ring? Shoot I used the wrong ring then. The ring I used the disk sat right on top of the ring and the disk was just barely smaller. I guess I will try the largest ring with the 2.72 disk and long silver spring.

Use the dark spring. I don't know if you've been chaning discs with the fuel lines connected or not, but if not you should try. They do not need to be disconnected, although it would be a bit easier to install the ring/disc.

Ok just so I have this right...I am to use the largest ring with the second largest disk and the dark spring? Sorry this ring disk combo stuff doesn't really make much sense to me.

im about to run 30lb injectors soon to and i read on a post a while ago to run the biggest disk (no ring), dark spring with bleed valve and checkvalve . static should be set around 28-30 and idle around 20

That would work with alot of bleed. I think the second largest disc/ring + dark spring would be nearly right on for 30#. I ran 335cc(approx 32#) for 2 years and 2.72 was a bit rich without bleeding any pressure.

OK I tried the 2.72 disk/ring combo with the dark spring. I got my idle to 20psi on the dot and my WOT is at 50. I noticed a pretty significant drop in performance. I mean the car was running fine with no problems, but I did go way lean during one 3rd gear pull on the way to work today. Also it seems to lag more now and 8psi just doesn't feel like it did with the large disk and silver spring. Am I just really rich now or something?

94194, RE: 30lb. Injector Tuning Posted by sike, Mar-27-06 08:20 AM
I really don't think you should be running lean with the 2.72 ring/disc combo. Are you sure you feel a performance difference? The largest disc rise rate should be really rich with 310cc injectors. I take it you do not have a wideband? If not, then run what you feel is the best setup until you have an accurate way to messure your AFR's. If you got your idle pressure down to 20psi with the 2.72 disc, then you will also be able to get 20psi with the largest disc w/dark spring, so if you like that setup better, go with it.

I didnt think it should of been running lean either. On the way home today from work it was pegging to lean real bad anytime I went into boost. I mean granted I was getting my reading from my nbo2. I put the largest disk back in with largest silver spring, but I will probably end up swapping the silver spring for the dark spring. I wonder if its going to do the same thing once I lower my fp to 20psi on the largest disk no ring w/ dark spring. I guess I will find out tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed! I will keep you posted.
And thanks for helpin me out Sike I really appreciate it! I just rated you.

hmm im about to go turbo.. just waiting for some more parts to come in.. i was told to use the biggest disk no ring, with the shorter spring of 2 cause i dont have the darker one. i was also told to use the 2.72 disk/ring combo. which do u guys think is better to try first?

94450, RE: 30lb. Injector Tuning Posted by sike, Apr-10-06 09:51 AM
IF stock injectors... use largest disc that has no ring. I use the dark spring with all of my sfmu setups.

94453, RE: 30lb. Injector Tuning Posted by chronicshit, Apr-10-06 02:48 PM
no 30lb injectors bro... so im guessing use the opposite setup then, the 2.72 disk/ring with the shorter of 2 springs i have. does that sound right?

i just tried setting up mine with the largest disk ,dark spring and the lowest i can get it is around 28psi idle . i took the cover of the sfmu off and it was still around 28-30 psi . i can raise fp .should i be able to get it down to 20 with the cover off ? do you think the 2.72 will lower it more ?

i'm using the 2.72 disk/ring combo with dark short spring and my idle fp is set @ 18 psi. I'm using RC 440's tho.

To throw a little spin on this question, with what ever setup you guys have, what is the highest fuel pressure you are seeing under boost?? I have the 2.72 disk/ring combo with the longer silver spring running 9lbs of boost along with the walbro 255. My idle pressure is at 19-20psi but I dont go above 35psi under boost. Wideband tells me under normal driving conditions I am right at 12v. Under boost, around 5k I start running a tad rich bouncing between 9.5 from when I first punch it and then evening out to about 10.5.
Now I also have an SAFCII pulling some fuel out to get it even to the 10.5 but when I try to adjust my fuel trim anywhere on the rpm range by -1, I go from 10.5 to 14-15V in the RPM range I am adjusting. Obvious power increase due to me running a little lean but I am a stickler for trying to keep my car running and dont want to chance any detonation no matter how little it may be.
Why would your suggestions be to help me get right at 12v with 9lbs of boost??

94519, RE: 30lb. Injector Tuning Posted by sike, Apr-12-06 03:15 PM
I'm running the smallest disk and with 440s and it is still rich in high rpm. I get about 12:1 at 4000rpm and then it richens up bigtime. AFC comming soon for that.

Disc will have no effect on idle pressure.

94875, RE: 30lb. Injector Tuning Posted by Aggression, May-05-06 02:21 AM
So did everyone end up getting their FP issues resolved? If so what did you do? I still need to replace my silver spring with the dark shorter one today after work if its not raining.
Fuel setup status:
walbro 255 310cc injectors SFMU - largest disk/tall silver spring
FPs are 30 idle & 83 wot at 8psi
I am hoping just by switching out the tall silver spring with the dark short one I can drop my FP down to 20 at idle which would still give me 70ish at wot. Does this still sound right? What should I be at wot with my setup?

im running largest disk with dark spring with bleed valve all the way open with checkvalve and 30lb injectors . im at 20 psi idle . still throwing system too rich code at higher rpm's . as soon as i get my wideband i can tune it better . the car runs great tho . no bogging or stuttering at all . i couldnt get lower than 30 idle until i upgraded the return to 6an .
