5384, Someone told me not to waste my $$$ on going turbo.
Posted by 9D9 MITSU RS, May-21-01 08:17 AM
I saw a guy today with WARR racing. He had a 1st gen talon tsi that is running 12.4 1/4 mile. I told him about how I wanted to go turbo. He said if u want performance, go 1st gen turbo. 2 gens have crankwalk. And plus he said he only spent $700 getting to the 12's. I still think the HRC stage 2 and eventually 3 would be nice for my 99 RS. What do u guys think? And btw, I kept my mouth closed, but 2gnt's don't have crankwalk.:)

By what you quoted him as saying, it sounds like he was working off of the incorrect assumption that you were going to buy a turbo DSM in order to "go turbo"

In the end, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Do what you want, it's your car. I love my turbo :-)

If you wanted a 1G I'm sure you could have had one instead of what you have. Of course its cheaper to make fast, the cost of your 2G bodywork:priceless. The minority of turbo'd 420As (for now): priceless. Whipping on cars with what was once a 16sec car: priceless. A 1G running twelves is like a 11sec race honda, just another fast honda.

once again I agree with stan. You can't get the kind of nice looks with a 1G. Yeah they are fast. But you can make your car fast to. Instead of running 12's you might be running 13's or 14's but who cares if they are a little faster. We look better. Inside and out. And nothing is beter than the look a guy gives you when you whoop up on his V8 stang. That alone is priceless.

Ditto... the 2G is such a better looking car... Perfect for the street... If I were to build a strip racer, then I would buy a 1G, just because of the lower dollar to horsepower ratio... but then it just wouldn't look as nice... besides there's nowhere to put the hunnies in a tube frame chassis with only 1 recaro racing seat... :)

If I wanted a cheap, ugly, fast car, I would have got an 80's model small block chevy powered car. I wanted a GOOD LOOKING car that is FAST, and that's what I intend to get.

Bring it on............

If you strictly want performance, I say go for a 1g gs-t (or gsx if you want fast drag strip times - less spin). They are cheap (many under 3 grand) and cheaper to modify. The 2g body style is much better looking, but also a lot more flashy. I would feel like I have less worries about cops pulling me over and checking for racing modifications if I had a 1g because its older and more plain looking. Also, for the same price of a turbo kit, you can get a 1g as a second car to play around with, and not worry if something goes wrong cus you'll still have your 2g as your daily driver.

5394, hehehe, this question again!

LAST EDITED ON 23-May-01 AT 05:29 PM (PST)

Well my friend, I am so used to hearing that question by now, that I just laugh.

I was the only 2GNA at the shootout last year, and had the "pleasure" of being told to buy a GSX about 300 times. Therefore, I now have my "official" response on my website http://www.GTuned.com under the sidebar "Why 420A"
Gotta love the Inetrnet!

Amongst some of the other reasons, 90% of the 1G racers that I personally know, have changed/rebuilt their transmissions at least once. They snap driveshafts when the track is too "sticky", they ALL develop grinding gears with time (syncros wear out fast..), they have problems with their rear ends (the cars :-) ), well, the list is endless. You also have to be careful to get the "big rod" motor in order to make sure that their rods don't break etc... basically, they have their fair share of problems too! Oh and did I forget to mention that they use Mass Air Flow Sensors... :-(

I could go on forever...

Granted, they can be made to go fast for dirt cheap, but the real challenge is to LOOK GOOD DOING IT, and do it R E L I A B L Y!

SOS!

It's kinda like a guy with a 72 Nova tellin' you his way is best, 'cuz it's so cheap. If you like your 2G, what's his opinion worth?

1G's are certainly cheap, but if you wanted one, you'd have one. The key here is that our cars fit what WE want. If I was looking for the cheapest thrills, I'd build a bike. So what?

When I bought my 98 RS, I thought I would prototype a turbokit on it, sell the car, and call it good. Three years later, I can't part with it. Surely I could afford something else, but I like the fact that my RS still rocks while allowing me $$$ to spend on other things, like my business and my family!

Fuck them if they don't see it your way. Like you care anyway! You have an excellent car to work with, to go as far as you wish with!

Those who can't see what we want don't matter anyway,
Bill

I explained the HRC kit to him and the price. He said just keep my car for show and daily driver. and build a 1st gen for speed. I was about to say, well, your car is ugly, but guess what. He said it 1st! He said he needed a paint job and mad stuff for it to look good. Said his car is ugly as hell, but he put all his $$$ into the engine. I was like damn, he knows how it is. His car is bad ass performance-wise tho. But hey, I'll kill him at any shows if he ever went.

The daily driver idea is good though. It's really ideal to have an extra daily driver backup car if you are going to do some major mods such as a turbo kit with high boost. Seeing all these people blow their engines, it'd be really nice to have a backup car rather than have to rent a car etc. Then you can work on your car all you want and not have to worry about getting it back together right away. After all that I've been through, I'd rather have a reliable daily driver...it really sucks not having a car to drive...

I bought a daily driver and for 10 out of the 12 months I owned it the car just sat doing nothing or my girlfriend drove it. It wasn't exactly cheap tranportion being a 95 Galant but I'm sure as hell glad I got rid of it. When I have some cash after I take a break from mods and buy the engagement ring I would have bought (got the turbo instead) I want to find a cheap civic for daily transportation but the way it looks now that will never happen cause I cant just stop now. So much to do, so little cash to go around.
