53720, Anyone ever datalog their intake temps under full boost??
Posted by XtremeRS, Aug-09-03 01:55 PM
Well i just did mine today, and damn, at WOT, 13 psi, in 4th gear, at the top of 4th @ 6500 rpms, it showed 150 degrees! Normal cruising around 65 or so in 5th, showed the lowest reading of 116 degrees. Outside temps was in the mid/upper 70's. Looks like this 1G side mount IC isnt cutting it at 13 psi :o I figured that though..not a whole lot of surface area to cool. I would think if i can lower the temps under boost to even 125 degrees, that i could gain what, maybe 10 HP?? What do you guys get for intake temps? I really need a FMIC baddddd...

anyone? I'm really curious to see what IAT's are for your FMIC's and running 10+ psi boost..

mine are 125-130 degrees F at full boost, but im only running 8psi.

edit: using pocketlogger, & i have the star fmic.

next time im in town matt we can datalog mine. you might have to check pocketloggers site for the updated software though. we were having issues last time with the a/t remember?

Yeah i was thinking about that too..since you have the nice FMIC :) I'm not sure how useful that info would be though, cause i will prob never be able to afford that HRC FMIC haha...maybe someday

Just wondering but what do you get under idle on a cold night like a minute after you start your car? I datalogged my car last night and it was 91 degrees! I was like shiet that kinda high for just starting it up and it cold outside. I think some kinda hood scoop or vent would greatly help IAT because I think what's really heating it up is the ambient engine bay heat the most. lets face it our cars have poor air circulation in the engine bay.

maybe if you make a coldair intake for your turbo it'll help a bit too. Probably not as much as an IC though.

Yeah a few months ago when I was loggin it was about 115 at idle and 140-150 at WOT. Thats when I wanted to turn the little 'power hump' on the hood into some kinda scoop to pull in cold air. If I cut acrost the hump at the front and poped it down, then put some kind mesh over the hole. Then design a sheild that would go around the air filter and keep the hot air away. everyone told me it was a bad idea so i went to my room and cryed my eyes out. :P

I even tried to pay my buddys dad that owns a body shop to do it and he said no its a bad idea bla bla. ogh well..

I'm doing the hood scoop thing right now. I picked up a junk hood to build a prototype. I cut a panel out of the front of the hump. Then built a hinge for the panel. When the panel is closed, it looks like a stock hood. When you want, the panel will flip open and direct air down to my airbox. I'm using a tiny linear solenoid to open the panel. I've built a control circuit to power up the solenoid when a preset boost (or vacuum) level is reached. So, when cruising around town...its essentially a stock hood. When you get on the gas, the panel flips open and sends ambient air down to the intake. I'll post pics when I finish the prototype.

i have the 1G SMIC too and i have similar a similar IAT's. i would have to agree that the 1G SMIC isn't much good past 14 psi or so with the S16G. this morning i hit 1600 degrees on the EGT gauge at 15 psi in 5th gear after about 4 seconds of full boost. oxygen sensor voltages were about .96 or so, outside tempature about 80-85.

How much do you think the invader hood would really help with ambient air temp in the engine bay? I can't imagine it making *too* much of a difference, since no air is really being "forced" into it, but I would think that it helps some. One more place for hot air to come out and cold air to go in...

run4cvr either needs to make a run or lend me his pocket logger. I'll find out for ya :)

Yeah, 150 degrees IAT really says that the 1g SMIC is getting fully heat soaked. I would have to think that its only truely efficient for around 8-9 psi of boost on the S16G. The compressed air on the S16G really starts to heat up once you go over 13-15 psi, because its efficiency starts to go down after around 15 psi. For those who want to do the hood thing, be very careful about getting water into the intake path. Corbin's idea sounds great, this way you can close it off if it starts raining and whatnot.

i like Corbins idea. Corbin when you get that working let us know.. i might do that.. try to keep track of all the parts etc we need.
