53699, 100,000 rpm tach Posted by turbo8u, Aug-09-03 07:39 AM
alright guys this might work.....
i was working on a friend of mines model plane and he showed me this laser that you point at the propellar and it shows you exactly what speed its goin....so i got this sick idea....
i took off my intake pipe to my turbo and started it up and revved it to see the turbine move and put the laser on it, it told me how fast it was goin, kinda like a turbo tach...if we had this we could tell exactly what out spool time was and exactly how mcuh back pressure we got or when the turbine slows down...that would be sick, a turbo tach..all the way to 100,000 rpm's. just mount the laser inside the intake pipe and wire it to a gauge
whatchau guys think?

sounds like an entertainment thing but cool nonetheless

Would that lil laser device restrict air flow with it being in the intake pipe?

we were talking about this at the shootout in the Best Western parking lot. I would imagine that it would work. How much is one though?

I would have fear that it'd get sucked into the turbo, well into the compressor wheel at least.....ouch.

how does it calculate the rpm's? i would think it would hafta do with the rate at which the beam is disrupted. in that case wouldn't it be affected by the number of fins or blades in whatever it's being pointed at? like if you're pointing it at the plane's propellar and it's got like 3 blades then every 3 times the beam is disrupted it's one revolution. but with the turbo there's a bunch more fins an stuff. idk maybe i'm way off on how the laser works *shrugs*. neat idea though

It's an optical pickup. You paint a white dot on it..
