52531, Turbo timer problems... Posted by Ryan_Hes, Jul-23-03 05:52 PM
I have the HKS Type1 with 2G harness. It is all plugged in to the ingnition, grounded, and connected to the e-brake. It lights up and works fine -- but when I turn the key out of the ignition it powers off. If Ithe engine is running and turn the key to the ON position, not remove the key, it counts down and the engine turbo times...but once I turn the key another turn to remove it...it all powers off. Any ideas? HELP!

humm... id say go over it again and make sure your wires are right and hooked up good. make sure the harness is pushed in all the way. i also have the hks tt w/ 2g harness. is yours the one with or with out the mph, rpm, voltmeter, etc...? i have that one, but forget what type it is.

Hmm, I have a type o hks timer and have no problems either, did you hook up the wire to the map sensor or does the type 1 have that?

It sounds like you have it wired to a switched power source. Check your 12v wire and make sure it's getting power from a non-switched source.
EDIT: Just in case there's confusion, by switched source, I mean a source that doesn't have power when the ignition is "switched" off. Kind of like your cd player.

since he is using the harness though, there is no real way to screw that part up, all you wire your self is the ground and the one wire to the parking brake light switch. Other than that, plug an play.

Make sure you have the e-brake set when you turn the key off or the timer will shut off with the car.

I have the Turbo Timer grounded to the CD player frame... would that matter? Other than that, the power can't be an issue because it's hooked up through the harness.
This is the HKS Type 1, The only connections needed are the ingition plug in, a ground, and a wire to the e-brake...and it's all accounted for. Any other ideas?

I moved the ground to the battery....no dice...this thing isn't working. It works if I turn the key to the ACC position...but once I turn it to take the key out it loses power....gah anyone?

what exactly do u do? turn the car on and let it sit, then turn it off? drive around then turn it off? becuase if u just start the car and dont go anywhere, theres nothing to turbo time. but if u go drive around, turn the key off, then it should do its thing. or if like u said ^ about just turning it to the acc and turn it back out, it wouldnt stay on cuz theres nothing to turbo time. well... yea it turns on when you turn the key to the on position. but i dont think its soppossed to come on when u turn it so just the radio comes on. mine doesnt.

I have the turbo timer ni manual mode, I set the time limit. If I turn the engine on, then turn the key out to the ON position it will do exactly waht it's supposed to....but if I turn it off and remove the key it powers off....god damnit this sucks

I've done some investigation with this timer (as I just bought one with Ryan) and it appears that HKS's instructions and harness powers the TT through ALL three power sources ( IGN1, IGN2, aaaaaand ACC).
Since I'm working to use the TT with an aftermarket alarm, I have to actually disconnect the TT's power sourcing to the ACC, and switch the alarm's connection to IGN1 and move it to the ACC.
This may have something to do with why the TT is staying on; it's connection with all three sources which include the ACC may be excessive. :wary

Yay! I figured it out. The harness is jank!
Although it has the correct plug-ins, apparently, it taps ALL the wrong wires. How weird is that? So we pay all this dough for a plug-n-play harness and it's anything but. Oh well.
I was also able to get my aftermarket DEI alarm to work with it perfectly as well. It's hella sweet walking away from the car with it on. LOL :thumbsup

And I did the soldering work on both of our harnesses! :-D hip hip hooray!

so u got it to work now? do u have a alarm? is that why u couldnt get it to work? i dont have an alarm, i just heard people with them seem to have some problems with that and a turbo timer.

ooh, you got your timer to work in conjuntion with your alarm? now you have to let the secret out! i was messing with mine for the longest time, and i finally just had to de-sensitise the shock sensors so the alarm wouldnt go off @ idle... thats as far as ive gotten... other than trying to figure out some sort of relay that activates the alarm once the car is done idling...

The alarm was irrelevant to the problems with the harness. The harness was retarded, period, end of story.
As far as using your aftermarket alarm in conjunction with your turbo timer, that's hella easy. First, make sure your turbo timer uses ONLY IGN1 and IGN2 as its sources of power. In other words, the constant 12v white wire and the black wire with white stripe wire that's powered when you're in the ON position. If your turbo timer uses a third wire from the ACC (blue wire), cut it! There's no reason for that to be connected. My HKS was supposed to be that way, and I've heard others are the same way.
As far as your alarm, you only need to do one thing. Currently, your alarm uses your IGN2 or the black wire with white stripe as a source to monitor your car for voltage drops. You need to detach that connection. Then take your alarm sensor wire and connect it to the BLUE ACC wire. That's it! Now, your alarm will monitor your accesories such as the dome light and watch for its voltage drop which will occur AFTER the turbo timer is done counting down.
Now you should be able to arm your car, as the turbo timer is counting down, and have it remain that way after the car has turned off.
(the wire colors were consistent in Ryan's 99 eclipse and my 98 talon)

yea, the wires were the same. if im not mistaken i took the alarm wire off the accessory and put it on the ignition? ill have to go check.
i wasnt having a problem arming it, just having it go off due to the engines idle shaking the shock sensors... ill give that a try though. thanks jason.

I want to do this! Where can I the alarm sensor wire .... or in other words, what colors is it and where should it loctated under the steering column? Thanks.

There's no way to know. I'm sure every alarm differs in its wire coding. Just look for your IGN wire which is the Black wire with white stripe and see what alarm wire is hooked up to it.
My DEI "Sidewinder" alarm had a yellow wire.

Just found out all the new DEI alarms and R/S will have a built in turbo timer feature! Sweeett... Most TT's will have an output that can drive a relay when the TT is active. All you have to do is use a relay on the alarm's ignition wire connection. Just interupt it when the TT is active, this way the alarm will not see ignition and set it off. As for a shock sensor, you can also interuput its power using a second relay. Most shock sensors have a wire harness that connects the sensor to the alarm's brain. DEI's have 4 wires, just interupt the red power wire with another relay. Now when the TT is on, the alarm will not see any ignition, and the shock sensor will be innactive. When the TT shuts off, both will be back to normal..

Ok, I should clarify, I have the stock "securtiy" alarm that came with the car. I don't know if that's a 99 special edition thing or not, but it usually lights up when I lock the car doors, but not anymore with the TT in place ..... hmmmm.

Follow this VFAQ for having the stock alarm work with a TT:http://ca.dsm.org/FAQ/2gtt-faq.html

ack! Wish I would have seen this sooner, I delt with the fubared TT harness a while back. I had to switch 2 of the wires around to make it work. And you know you have a jacked up harness when you plug it in and your heater does not work. At least thats what mine did!

I bet that you all have 1G harnesses. There is a two wire difference between the 1G harnesses and the 2G harnesses. Both will plug in just fine, but two wires are reversed, which causes the symptoms that you describe. -=B-=
