Does HRC sell a kit? Or did you guys make something up, and if so how did you connect the turbo to the cooling system? Big differance in cooling?

I don't think there is a kit available to do this, but I've seen a few custom jobs. There are 2 rubber coupler sections on the water pipe that runs above the exhaust mani and down the right side of the engine. Place a T fitting there and run it to the turbo for inlet and outlet water lines.

you need (2) .25" NPT fittings. i got them at my local hardware store. they screw right into the S16G, but you need to take out the hex key blockers first. put the 2 fittings in and USE TEFLON TAPE OR YOU WILL BE SORRY. trust me. the first time i did it i was a complete tard and forgot teflon tape and it leaked everywhere.

after you get the 2 things screwed in, buy some heater hose and 4 clamps for it. the heater core sender thingy is the hard pipe that goes right over the exhaust manifold. some people take the rubber thing here and put a T on it which is good for the sender but then you have to deal with the return line. more complicated than it needs to be IMO.

the way i hooked up coolant lines was using the heater core return thingy. there's a smaller hard pipe that goes up from the lower radiator pipe and connects to the heater core return line. connecting these 2 hard pipes is a rubber hose. remove it. coolant will go everywhere unless you drain the radiator a little, but you don't need to completely drain it.

now run some heater hose from the turbo to one of the pipes that is now open. it doesn't really matter which one goes where, i'm pretty sure the turbo doesn't care which way the coolant flows. i put some autozone fake braided steel covering on the heater hoses to help protect against heat. i think the fake braided steel stuff looks like shit (the real stuff is awesome), but hopefully it does something to protect the rubber lines from the infinite heat from the exhaust man1fold.

i decided to make a mspaint thingy consisting entirely of squares.

What I did was cut the hard heater line (the one towards the driver's side) then ran it into the turbo. Then out of the turbo and into the hard line down on the lower radiator hard pipe. That way all flow goes through the turbo.

*BTW* Mine's not HRC if you couldn't tell.

i thought they were oil cooled... can anyone explain or am i just under the wrong impression?

I heard somewhere that watercooling isn't a good idea because it weakens the metal??? I heard oil cooling is the best way to go.

most factory turbochargers that i know of are water cooled and oil cooled. if antifreeze weakened the metal inside of the turbocharger, i bet that the engineers/designers would have forseen this and wouldn't implement water cooling on factory turbocharged cars that have a requirement of being "reliable".

You can also use modified fittings and lines from a 4G63 Eclipse turbo. Hook in to the same places mentioned before. The only detrimental effect is the added load capacity on your cooling system. If you are having cooling problems to begin with, I would sort those out first, but watercooling your turbo will not hurt it. It was designed this way. HRC simply caps off the water channels on all the turbos they sell in their kits. These same turbos are being used by the 4G63 crowd with the water lines intact.
