51789, Click, ping, tick, slap, etc... compression test Posted by thegame, Jul-09-03 02:44 AM
Ok. Heres my story..... Took a trip for the weekend (2hr drive 1 way). About half way there, my car stuttered I guess u could say. I was just driving/cruising, accelerated a little bit and it stuttered once. I got paraniod and pulled off and just let the car sit. Before that happened, I noticed whenever I let off the gas, my fuel pressure would drop like 2-6psi below what it usually does (seems to only do this on long trips). It was really hot out too. So I get to my destination and the car sits till the next day. I start my car the next day and there is a loud, horrible click, ping, tick, slap noise? I shut the car off (Im freaked out now). Nervously, I start it back up. Still making that noise. Shut car off. I open the hood to see if I can see anything wrong. Only thing I notice is 1 of my belts look slightly wore on the edge. Nothing really. So I start it back up, and its still making that noise. I rev it up a tad and it gets faster. I said screw it, and started driving. So Im on my way to autozone cuz I cant figure out whats wrong, we get there and it stops making noise. Figures. But anyways.... for the past 5 days, its been doing that. But it only does it when the car has been sitting for a long while. And once you start it up, it only does it for a couple minutes. I dont hear it when the car is warmed up. Got home today and took a compression test though. 1st test - 200/210/215/205 2nd test - 205/215/215/207 So they are all still 200+ Thats good. Checked oil also, and its full.
So what do you think is wrong? Why does it go away when the car is warmed up? Its loud and the beat is fast (faster if you rev it). The comp numbers are good, and my car seems to run/boost just fine. Any ideas? Help! (sorry for the long post)

could be lifter tick. id recommend the PT cruiser lifter set. i got mine from Howell Automotive, and they got here very quickly. ive heard of some people having problems with them, but my experience has been great. i think that Bob Kise(sp?) can get you a killer deal on the whole lifter/rocker set for like 170 bucks if i remember correctly. since the valve cover is so easy to remove, take it off, and look in there and see if you can find something like a bad lifter(the plunger will puch down too easily) or something like one of your cam lobes wearing off. the fact that it goes away when the engine is warm makes me almost assuredly think its something on the valvetrain. www.TeamKLR.com 1997 Silver RS Wiseco 8.8:1 Pistons(back to low compression!) Will I be ok? Should I still drive it? Is this a major thing? I really wanted to do my bottom end, but if I should do this first, then Ill do it first.

Do it when you do the bottom end. No worries.

Could maybe aslo be a bearing inside one of your pulleys. Your belt obviously shouldn't be worn like that - you might have a bearing in one (or more) of the pulleys that is worn and causing strange noises when you first start up. But hey .... it could be anything....:wary

hmm my engine got hella louder also I've been having head problems lately with valve stem seals, burning oil, and all. Grrr I'll tell you this don't cheap out when you do a rebuild REBUILD that head while your at it, I know you can't do it yourself you'll have to take it to a machine shop but it being a PITAs right now.
I think have the same problem as you, could it be lifters? Is there anyway to tell, cuz I took off the valve cover recently and checked everything out under it and everything seemed fine. I wiggled each rocker arm and no play. Could this be my noise problem. Is it suppose to go away when it hot. It could just be extreme piston slap eh? (which I hope its not)

Well.... got some good news. I started it up again this morning, and checked it out again. Somewhat found the problem. I now know the sound has to be coming from a either a belt, pulley, or bearing. I could hear and feel the vibration coming from that area. I watched my belt to see if I could see anything wrong besides the 1 side that was worn. Couldnt really see anything, but once the car started heating up, I saw the belt jiggle around a little and then get tight. So my belt might be loose. Im gonna go check it out soon, and Ill let u guys know. Its not the alt/ps? belt, the other bigger one. What all runs off that? I know the water pump, but thats all I can think of.

Woah, do you mean the timing belt? The t-belt is the one that goes over the water pump. There are 2 belts that are not under the t-belt cover. One is the PS/AC it is twards the front of the bay, and there is the ALT belt, which is to the back side. Which belt r u talking about?

Im pretty sure I fixed my prob by tightening the belt... we'll see over time. Its not the alt belt, or the belt under the cover (timing), so I guess its the ac/ps one. I wasnt sure what all ran off that.

Keep a close eye on it if it is your timing belt. You don't wanna throw that thing, or else you with have valve train problems!
