Can anyone answer some questions about this?

1. What boost should i do break in at?
2. How do i run the engine and for how long etc.

any advise would be greatly appericiated.

IMO don't boost it at all for the first 1500 miles. After it's together run it for 20 min or so and change the oil. then change it at 500, 1000 and 1500. Use regular oil at first and don't switch to synth till the 1500 change if your going to use synth oil. There are many different ways to break in a motor, this is how I did mine. I am very happy with the results so far. The thing runs like a champ. I just drove the car normally, not babying it and not stomping on it. Of course you have to keep it out of boost so you can't get on it too much.

i say just pound the sh* out of it right when you drive it out the garage. but then again ive been working on v8s my whole life and this is my first 4 banger.

typically, as little as possible, but there are differing theories.

again, typically 1500 miles and make sure to use real oil when breaking it in. Switch to synthetic if you want to, but do that later.

Yep, that's how I broke in my engine too. No boost for the first 1000 miles to make sure everything is seated and sealed, and try to vary your RPMs while driving, then only boosted a few psi for the next 500 miles.

I changed my oil around 25 miles to get any the metal shaving out, then changed again at 500, 1000, and at 1500 I put synthetic in.

I have broken in every engine I have built the same way I planned on driving it, works like a champ for me. I have built quite a few as well, V8s and 4 bangers.

eh, you guys are paranoid. boost away as much as you want, within reason. i pushed 5 psi to 5000 rpm's on my first test drive to seat the rings, then 12 psi to 5000 rpm's until 1000 miles at which point i decided it was good enough and i went to redline. no smoke, good compression. i used Nitrous_97RS's method with engine breakin.

there are lots of ways to break in and engine. cars that come with a turbocharger from the factory don't have boost disabled until X miles or anything like that, and there's never a problem. IMO, the most important thing in breaking in an engine is properly seating the rings. in order to do that properly you need to put the engine under a decent load - i'm not talking a redline dyno pull, but a dozen or so 30-65ish mph 3rd gear pull sounds about right. after that you're good.

i didn't switch to synthetic until about 4000 miles. from what i hear, it takes longer than 1000-1500 miles for everything to become 100% happy, and Mobil 1 15W-50 (what i use) synthetic oil doesn't stick to stuff as well as the "natural" 10W-30 stuff, especially when the metal on metal surfaces aren't fully bonded/maited/broken in/whatnot.

I changed the oil after the initial 15 minute warm-up.

For the first 10 miles, I found a nice long stretch of country road and varied the rpms from 2500 to 5500 in the same gear... up and down, up and down.

The next 10 miles, I did the same thing except between 4000 and redline. That breaks in the rings about 95% complete.

I boosted 15psi at the track within the first 100 miles and I'm boosting 15+ daily now. RUNS LIKE A PRO!

i agree w/ the guys about changing the oil like 3 times before 1500 miles...i took it easy my first rebuild...didnt boost it ..no probs..then my oil pump failed so in goes new crank, bearings and reconditioned eagle rods(just to make sure they were w/n eagles factory specs) and new oil pump..not positive that the rings got back into the right cylinders b/c the machine shop removed my labels..o well..i'm pretty sure they are right , just not positive..after starting her up,letting it warm up and driving it around for 20 minutes boost went up to 18 psi and no probs since then..i have a lot of friends taht have worked on detroit muscle and they all tell me that the rings will seat w/n 200 miles and to drive it like you would if it were already broke in...i had no probs as of yet..opinions very but i read up a lot about it online and most guys say to break it in like you intend on driving it..just change the oil a lot of those first few miles....moral, both worked for me ..so who really knows

So when I rebuild, I should stay away from the highway???

nah. i had less than 200 miles on my new engine and i went on a road trip during spring break to Atlanta to visit one of my "ramblin' wreck from Georgia Tech" buddies. i haven't had any issues.
