51596, egt's while in vac Posted by 97eclipseRS, Jul-06-03 01:30 PM
i just took a 5 hour drive and used my cruise control most of the way. sometimes in 5th while the car is accelerating my egt's would get close to around 780 C which is around 1600 F. this is all outside of boost at about maybe 3-5 hg of vac(that's how i was measuring what the throttle pos. was while in cruise). i think this is pretty normal, i mean, i don't think it's pretty hard to do any damage while outside of boost. i was just wondering what you're temps are like under these conditions. i was cruising around 72mph.

yea..... mine get pretty high also esp. when im going up hills. ive heard that the max safe temp is around 1550, but i try not to even go past 1500. kinda makes me mad even getting to 1400. maybe if i had the 30lb injectors instead of the stockers, it would be better? no clue....

While cruising on the highway, while in vacuum, the highest I ever see for my egt's are around 1400-1450F. That's going up a hill or whatnot. On a flat road, they stay right around 1350-1400F.

doesn't matter if your in a vac or boost it's exaust gas temp.... it seems you might me running a little lean......plus ken what was the ambient temp out when you did your trip... G

Yeah, I agree, that seems just a bit high. High temps usually mean your running a bit lean - a really really bad thing. Give her a bit more fuel and see if that doesn't make a difference. And yes ^^ getting the 30lb injectors will cool down the exhuast temps. Definately put them on your next to-do list.

ok, i have 30# injects, and i'm not running lean either. my fuel trims are pretty good and my ltft is around -5 to -10. my o2 volts are at about .94 at WOT which is perfect. i get no knock and it was in the 80s while i was driving.
i've heard a couple people (i think it was jason or dino) say that 1600 or so is normal on a n/a engine at highway speeds under some load.
personally, i don't think that it's out of the norm. it only got that high when the car would give itself a good amount of throttle to keep up the speed, and i was going uphill many times. also, high egt's in boost is much worse than high egt's in vac. in boost you're shoving a lot more air in than in vac, obviously, and the engine is much more prone to detonation.

My car does the same thing. Mine is a manual, in 5th gear cruising at about 75-80 mph, 3-4 hg of vac, mine reads about 1375 (my probe is just after the turbocharger). If you floor it, still in 5th, the temp will acually cool down 50-75 degrees at 7 psi of boost. I don't have a datalogger, but according to the blinky p.o.s a/f meter, It may be a rich spot causing some afterburn IMO. My fuel pressures are a little fat across the board, and I never heard any detonation.

1600 sounds just a tad bit high, for part throttle acceleration under a load, no boost. 1500 sounds about right for what i get if i boost lightly to like pass someone at part throttle.. Could be lean, but if its in closed loop, then no way to adjust for that. Could be an o2 sensor, but doubt that. Could be that your EGT gauge is inaccurate.. IMO, the only time you should see 1600, is at a WOT full boost run..not at part throttle load..no boost..

well i messed up a bit... i just realized that 780ich C is only about 1550F not 1600 maybe even less i didn't do the exact calculation.

it does matter if the EGT reading is in boost or not. 1550 in vaccum isnt nearly as dangerous as 1550 while boosting. the MUCH higher cylinder pressures while boosting also contribute to detonation. 1550 without boosting shouldnt do any damage to your engine. the highest i ever saw my EGT's get on the interstate, were going up a big hill, and it got to 1500 momentarily, until the ECU read the extra load. you can see the A/F get richer, and the EGT drops 125-200 degrees as a result. you may be running just a taaad lean. do you have a SAFC by any chance? www.TeamKLR.com 1997 Silver RS Wiseco 8.8:1 Pistons(back to low compression!) >U gonna race me or what ken ????????:) as soon as i get back, hehe... how's your clutch, btw
i don't have an safc, anyway, now that i'm at a higher altitude my egts are much lower. i just got finished driving at around 55 up mountains and stuff and i never saw over 725C even when boosting a bit in 5th. the temp is a bit cooler though also here.

You are way off
780C = 1436F
I have no clue how you did the conversion, but that seems normal

Mine get up into the 1500s while I am in vac going up the highway. It's all in closed loop though, so I can't lean it out anymore anyway. My car is still not really together yet anyway, so I am going to see what happens.

1350-1400 cruising-no boost.

yeah Ken I got my clutch in and i got my big 16g in so let me know when u wanna head to the track. I am trying to get the fmic and injectors next week then i am gonna let Jeff Hill tune me and I am good to go at 20psi daily :)

wow, ok well i hadn't done the conversion b/c i didn't have the chance too. i just estimated it, but i guess i was way off. thanks for settin' me straight :thumbsup .
remy, as soon as i get home we'll set a track day up. i got a couple of othes who wanna also go down.

hehe, no prob, but that egt number seems alright, its when you are getting close to 900c when you have to worry, I am hitting about 835 at the top of 3rd gear at 17 psi of boost, my cruise on flat highway at about 70 mph is between 600 and 700, so if you add some load like going up hill, 780 would be right about where you want.
