51423, HRC Turbo Gone Bad

Well my HRC Turbo is shot. I was driving the car the other day and when I stoped I heard a weird noise....I popped the hood and it seemed to be coming from the turbo. I took off te intake pipe and checked the turbo....lots of shaft play is all I have to say. Was it me or the Turbo. I had my stage II on for about a year I think but only for about 5000 miles or less. No winter driving, turbo timed, and oil changed at 2500.

How much shaft play is there? Its completly normal for there to be a slight amount of shaft play in the S16G turbo. I know i can wiggle my turbo shaft around a bit, maybe like 1 mm i suppose. I get no oil in my intake, and no strange sounds. Too much shaft play, is when the actual compressor fins start to touch the wall of the compressor housing. That may be what you are hearing..you should be able to push the shaft to one side and see if its hitting the wall of the housing.. Its NOT normal for a turbo to go bad that quickly. It should last thousands and thousands of miles..I'd be sure you are getting the proper oiling to the turbo..I'd make sure the oil feed line isnt partially clogged, or the inlet to the turbo clogged at all..

I am pretty damn sure I have too much shaft play and the turbo is making a funny loud ass noise. I don't think the lines could be clogged....but how would I check them.

take off the oil feed line to the turbo, start the car, if oil squirts out, your fine.. but shut the car off quick and make sure you aim the oil into a cup or something.

then.. hook the line back up, take off the oil return line to the oil pan, start the car.. aim the hose to a cup and see if oil comes out.

keep in mind that you should put some oil back in ;)

is the turbo creating boost? Its very hard for an hrrc turbo to go bad. The only way for it to really go bad is if it doesn't get oil. I know this for a fact. i blew up my 16g... hehe

I wouldn't condemn the turbo until it starts spitting oil into the intake pipes or you can tell that the fins are contacting the housing. Funny noises can come from alot of random places.

I checked the oil feed line and oil squirts out, I checked the oil return line and oil squirts out of the bottom of the turbo....now what. Oh yeah and I know the noise is coming from the turbo.

did you rebuild or install a new motor in the lifespan of the turbo? Turbo bearings don't like the oily metal trash that cycles through a motor after it is rebuilt...
