51056, WTF Piston slap I think and problems with eic Posted by extreme97nt, Jun-26-03 07:13 AM
Well I think Im another sufferer from piston slap. The VT engine is very noisy at idle. It gets better once the engine is warm. I don't remember it when the old engine was in. Im hoping it is just the valvetrain. Do you think it would be Vt's fault or could it just be the way je pistons are designed. Also I am still having problems with the software from the eic. The program keeps freezing when I open it. I tried reloading the software also but no luck. The busy light keeps flashing and I get a tone.

So, you've loaded the software per the instructions, right? And you input the license code into the ECU32 program? Then you used super.exe to talk to the EIC? Does it fill in the data in the matrix and variable boxes when you start communicating with the EIC? If you can borrow a different laptop, you might try loading the software on that.

Yes the data comes up in the matrix. However as soon as it does it freezes. I will see if I can find some one with another laptop. If not I will drag my desktop into my garage.

As far as the piston slap is concerned, I don't know anyone with JE pistons that doesn't get piston slap. I guarentee you that VT machined the block to JE's specs. They have to machine the block with larger tolerances for forged pistons because of their greater expansion rate. Mine slaps pretty good at startup as well, but quiets down once it warms up (Howell block). I have my motor apart right now, and I took a good look at the cylinder walls to see how much wear the slap is causing, and it is negligable. VT machined a 4g63 block for one of my friends running over 500 whp so that he could run 30+ lbs of boost and nitrous safely and let me tell you... that thing SLAPS hehe. The larger the tolerances, the hotter it allows the pistons to get. If they machined it with stock tolerances, your first time down the track at 25 psi of boost would probably leave you with a seized motor.

yeap, everyone i know gets piston slap on startup with je's. once its warmed up it seems to go away...

how much more would it be to get T6 type psitons to avoid the tolerance and the piston slap?

I don't get any piston slap. Should I be worried about putting power to this thing. I have not heard the pistons slap yet. The only noise I have is from the TO bearing.

I don't get any slap either and I'm putting plenty of boost through my engine. I've talked to guys that get slap and some that don't. Either way, if you put your engine together within resonable specs you'll be just fine.

Most cars with forged pistons will get piston slap on startup. you actually WANT some piston slap for the above mentioned reasons, but not too much. thats why a rebuilt forged internaled block wont ever last as long as an OEM block as far as wear and tear goes. www.TeamKLR.com 1997 Silver RS Wiseco 8.8:1 Pistons(back to low compression!) No (or very little) piston slap here.
What sort of clearances are you using on the rings? and bore to pistons?

I'd love to agree with you man but that's just NOT TRUE!

Dont know for sure what PTW clearance is( VT did that in the machining), but my ring gaps: Top ring- .022 Second ring- .024 These are slightly large ring gaps, but this was recomended by JE when i talked to them about future plans with the power output of the motor. I think Howell uses slightly smaller ring gaps..I'd rather play it safe.

No..its not wrong. a forged internaled block will withstand a LOT more power than a cast piston block. and it will hold that power for much longer than a OEM block. thats common sense. what i mean is, if you have a block with brand new OEM internals..and a block with forged internals that had been rebuilt...both ran without a turbo, the forged internals WILL NOT last as long as the OEM components. they dont give as much, and they put more stress on the cylinder walls. my dad used to own his own machine shop, and any engine builder worth anything wil ltell you the same. dont expect 100k+ miles out of your rebuilt JE/Wiseco block, cause it just aint gonna happen. www.TeamKLR.com 1997 Silver RS Wiseco 8.8:1 Pistons(back to low compression!) Some stock engines do come with forged pistons.

My story- When I was just a wee little lad, my father and I rebuilt a 455 HO with forged interals and it's pushed over 300 horsepower in a 1970 GTO for more that 100k miles... so I don't buy it. I'm not saying this is the case with every engine, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :P
I DO agree that an engine with piston slap isn't neccessarily a good thing and may decrease the lifespan of the engine. You really do not want piston slap. There is a trade-off between using large clearances versus spec clearences. The only car I'd ever let slap is one that I know is going to be rebuilt occasionally because it's a race-only engine needing larger clearences for more internal expansion cause by high temps.
