51015, hesitating star stage 2 Posted by MITSURACER, Jun-25-03 06:47 AM
i finally finished my install. the star stage 2 looks great and so far shes running okay. i took her for a spin and it gets up and goes but at about 3,000 rpm in second gear it hesitates. seems like fuel is not getting there in time. do i need to get the car tuned after i installed it. i have teh super afc 2 but i havent dropped it in yet. do you guys think that would correct it. if not what else could it be. i was thinking it could be that stupid map bypass thing. does the missing link help on the hesitation. oh and i have a check engine light :( i havent had it diagnosed yet though. any ideas from anyone on teh hesitation. thanks fred

Do the key dance to find out why your check engine light is on. That may answer your problem.

Id bet its the fuel cut defenser. www.TeamKLR.com 1997 Silver RS Wiseco 8.8:1 Pistons(back to low compression!) Eagle Rods T3/T4 Turbo Custom FMIC Greddy Exhaust 440's Most current 1/8th mile time: 8.3@90mph 2.015 60'(Nitto Drag radials, i suck)

No, you shouldn't have to have it tuned. If it's the FCD, the S-AFC won't correct the problem. could be that your FCD isn't clamping the voltage low enough. check the code to find out for sure. If you can't do the key dance, autozone will check and clear them for free.

does the hesitation come in during WOT or partial throttle?

What do you have your plugs gapped at??? Might have them to open and when you hit boost it's blowing the spark out...

It's definately the FCD. Mine did the same thing. I threw it away and got a 'Missing Link', haven't had the problem since... That was over a year ago

WELL THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF . I FORGOT TO PUT THE O2 SENSOR BACK IN BEHIND THE CAT. WHEN I DID THAT IT WORKED FINE. IT STILL HESITATES A LITTLE. WHAT IS A FUEL CUT DEFENSER. IVE HEARD IT ALOT OF TIMES BUT IM NOT SURE WHAT IT DOES. COULD IT IT BE A FUEL PROBLEM ALSO. I HAVE 550 RC INJECTORS BUT I HAVENT INSTALLED THEM YET. IM DOING MY INTERIOR THIS WEEKEND THEN IM GOING TO INSTALL THE 550'S THE SUPER AFC 2 AND THE BOOST CONTROL AND TURBO TIMER. I AM RUNNING THE STOCK PLUGS ALSO SO MAYBE THAT IS IT. I CANT FIND THE NGK BKR7-11'S. ANY OTHER RECOMENDATIONS FOR PLUGS OUT THERE. AND WHAT I SHOULD GAP THEM TOO. I KNOW THEY SAID 30-35 FOR THE BKR 7 11 BUT WHAT ABOUT OTHER ONES SHOULD I USE 30-35 FOR ALL OF THEM. AND ONE MORE QUESTION, DO I HAVE TO GAP IRADIUM PLUGS IF I CAN GET THOSE. SORRY BOUT THE THOUSAND QUESTIONS :7 YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN A HUGE HELP THOUGH SO THANKS ALOT TO EVERYONE THAT ANSWERS MY STUPID NEWBIE QUESTIONS :thumbsup

safc is a pice of shit IMO.
get a missing link, sounds like your getting fuel cut.

fuel cut defender is the ecu way of cuttin fuel so things dont get "outta hand". the ecu just doesnt know better. get a missing link if you dont have one.

OKAY EVERYONE KEEPS TALKING UP THE MISSING LINK, SO IM JUST GONNA GO AHEAD AND BUY IT. NOW WITH THAT THING DO I LEAVE THAT MAP SENSOR BYPASS THAT COMES WITH THE STAR KIT IN WITH THE MISSING LINK OR DOES THAT REPLACE THE MAP SENSOR BYPASS. AND CAN I SILL RUN THE SAFC OR SHOULD I GET RID OF IT. BESIDES TEH HESITATION IT RUNS GREAT . IT HESITATES ON THE TRANSITION FROM MID THROTTLE TO WIDE OPEN. MAN THESE CARS ARE COMPLICATED :(

NOW WITH THAT THING DO I LEAVE THAT >MAP SENSOR BYPASS THAT COMES WITH THE STAR KIT IN WITH THE >MISSING LINK OR DOES THAT REPLACE THE MAP SENSOR BYPASS. AND >CAN I SILL RUN THE SAFC OR SHOULD I GET RID OF IT. i believe that you would take the map sensor bypass off. dont quote me and DONT DO IT UNTIL SOME OTHER PEOPLE COMMENT. i believe it would replace that because the missing link holds your voltage at a certain level so your ecu doesnt see positive backpressure *boost*. i would keep the safc. you would probly need it for the bigger injectors or you would probly flood the engine with fuel. later.

You can leave the MAP bypass (otherwise known as FCD) on there if you want. The FCD does electronically what the missing link does mechanically. So, either should work. Although if you go to high boost levels, a missing link would be a good idea so that you don't crack your stock MAP sensor.
I hope you have another disk to change your rise rate for those 550's.

no i dont have any other disks for the fpr. i have the fpr that comes with the kit ya know the vortech boost dependent regulator. does that one have disks to change and if so what size would i need and where can i get it. thanks fred

You have to get a different disk if you're going to put injectors that large in. I don't know what size disk, but for the 440's I'm using the smallest disk in the S-FMU kit. Someone else might know what disk to use, but I've never needed to calculate it.

Take the FCD off the car when you get the MISSING LINK, toss it in the trash. You will be very pleased with the ML, and will no longer get any hesitation @ 3000rpm.
