I am thinking about installing this kit by my self for a project over the winter. I don't really know anything about my engine besides the basic parts and layout. I wanted to know if for one I should install this myself or have a mechanic do it. If I do it myself hopefully this board will give me alot of help. If anyone is in the Philadelphia area I would love help. If I did this myself about how many working hours will it take me. Any insight would be great.:o

I did alot of research before I ever purchased my turbo kit. I found out what parts work (are reliable) on the HRC kit and what parts do not from owner's experiences on this board (especially Matt - XtremeRS - gave me alot of advice). Also, make sure you have more money saved then the basic cost of the kit. I believe the stage two kit cost about $3,400 (with side mount and Greddy Type S BOV) but I would have to say I put close to $4,000 dollars into the kit by the time I was finished.

I also picked up a Mitsubishi Factory Service Manual (both mechanical and electrical) to help locate some key items that you need to work with on the turbo kit. These cost about $100 bucks but alot of people on this board have them in electronic form for free.

I would also take a look at the HRC instructions and determine if you are up for the task. Optimuspeterson has them on his site at http://home.bendcable.com/optimuspeterson.


Here is a list of parts you may want to consider:

It really determines how you define essential. Do you just want to get the car up and running with the parts that come in the kit or do you want to make a solid daily driver.

Just the kit:
HRC Stage II with a side Mount $3,409
HRC Stage II with a front mount is $400 more (I believe, check their site for exact pricing - www.hahnracecraft.com)

Upgrading the kit to make it reliable:
- A/F Gauge, Boost Gauge, EGT gauge, and Triple Full Pillar Pod ($400)
- 4G63 8mm Exhaust manifold studs, nuts, and washers ($15)
- Vortech Super Fuel Management Unit with Hard Spring
(Part #7X100-050) ($307)
- NGK Spark Plugs BKR7E-11 (www.ngksparkplugs.com) ($16 - I bought 8)
(one range colder than stock - stock is BKR6E-11)
- Missing Link 003 Fuel Cut Defender (www.group5motorsport.com) ($45)
- Fire Hose (to protect the A/C hoses) ($40)
- Walbro Intank (to get rid of the noise) ($100)

Special Tools Needed for any kit:

- Wide variety of open end wrenches and a socket set.
- Variety of other hand tools (wire crimpers, wire strippers)
- Schrader Check Valve (tire valve) removal tool ($2)
- Teflon Paste ($5)
- Oil Pressure Sending Unit Socket 1 1/16" Size (can be purchased from Leslie tools - pep boys sells these) ($8)
- Lots of patience (fuel system work and fitting the intercooler piping can be tricky on your first attempt)
- Spark plug gapper ($2)


So if you want just the Stage II kit you are looking at $3,409. If you want to play it safe with all the upgrades that I have made, you are looking at around $4,300. I don't think that I went overly crazy with my setup but wanted to make a solid daily driver.


The turbo is absolutely worth it. As some people have said and I agree, it is like driving a totally different car. The car is no longer sluggish. As far as whether it will kill your motor, do a compression test and if you are around 200 lbs for each cylinder. If your numbers are close, your motor is in good shape.

I would also suggest doing some research on how to tune the car. When running stage II boost levels, you want to make sure you are getting enough fuel to the motor. This is key to your motor's survival.


As always, leave some money aside for unexpected complications with the turbo install. There is always something you forget or don't expect.

I am going to get the extra accesories that you speak about like the sfmu, 4g63 bolts, all guages, missing link. I am also going to get my car fully serviced before the install timing belt, surpentine belt, tensioner, all fluids flushed, tune-up, new mobile 1 oil and filter, and new fuel filter. I am also looking for someone to help with this project maybe in the philadelphia area. If not then me and my buddies will do it.

If you have some time you might as well do a compression check to make sure you're in good working order.

Don't bother to change the oil before the turbo install.. you have to drop the pan and drill a hole in it, so you'd just have to change it again.

I live just on the other side if the Walt Whitman Bridge and could lend a hand also. Just installed my Hahn stage 2 in January.

I live about 15 minutes away from where PowerEclipse ^^^ is at and we both have done a turbo stage II install. Just up by Allentown. Where outside of Philly are you? It's not that hard and I WOULD recommend you do it yourself (not farm it out), it's the only way you'll really have the knowledge to keep it tuned and running properly. Definately save some money for the upgrades or be in a financial position to do it right afterwards. It will make your life so much better:thumbsup

97-99 use the late kit, so yeah you'll need the late fuel system.

Can you buy an ACT 2600 lb clutch or do you HAVE to use the HRC clutches like their site says?

USE any clutch you want when it gives out get a better one...:)
