5050, Nos and turbo Posted by greenenvy95, May-15-01 07:37 AM
I have a question about using NOS with the turbo. I have two nos kits and i want to install a 2 stage kit. What is the highest shot i can use. I want stage 1 to be a 50 shot and stage 2 to be a 75 shot. These are both wet kits. I had my bottom end built and part of the top end.(list below) I want to run nos with a HRC Stage 2 kit. Do you think that that will bet too much with the turbo kit?

its definately too much to run on your stock injectors

I have to admire a pioneer. One question though - why NOS too? Are you the 1st to do it for 420a's?
Cyan is right though about fuel injectors. But im sure you already ordered those.
NOS is 2 parts nitrogen and 1 part oxygen. It is 36% oxygen by weight compared to the 25%(roughly) actual oxygen that is in the air we breathe. It is 1 1/2 times denser than atmospheric air. When it is heated to 572 F the oxygen is released. Yada Yada my point is, make sure you have enough fuel. Sorry about that tangent, I did a speech about nitrous earlier this semester.

if they are both wet kits, why would he need to rely on his injectors to supply more fuel for the nitrous? thats the job of the wet kit. Now, granted i don't think i would trust doing this myself still, based on the fact, all that extra fuel is being dumped in based on extra fuel pressure, and through a nitrous kit, while still using the stock injectors. It just doesn't seem like it would be very accurate, but i don't see why it wouldn't work.

Stock internals + stage two turbo + NOS = BIG BOOM. Dont do it. If you have a stage 2 turbo kit why add NOS? Also why would you want that much power unless your going to put together an all track car? And if your going to do that just get a bigger turbo and better internals. Just look at wyatt. He has rebuilt his engine and is running about 300 hp at the wheels on 12 pounds of boost. That kind of power will stop 99.9% of the cars on the street. And he says he can boost higher. I would just stick with the turbo.
I'm not trying to be an ass. I just dont think our blocks can take that much pressure, and I dont want you to blow your engine. Just my 2 cents:-)

where does the 300 hp at the wheels at 12 lbs. of boost come from. just out of curiousity? his dyno charts were at 267 at the wheels on 12 PSI...

Yes you can run NOS and a Stage II setup and yes it is being done now. Yes you should look into larger injectors for more boost without a doubt, but if the NOS is a wet kit the injectors do not matter as much for how much NOS you are running, only for how much boost you are running with it. A 75shot sounds perfect to me. If you want to go dry, get really large injectors. That is the only thing you are missing now anyway.

His motor will handle it fine, but where will he get the fuel for the nitrous fuel enrichment? The regulator will have too high of fuel pressure at full boost to send an accurate amount of fuel through the nitrous fuel enrichment jets. The nitrous fuel jets need steady fuel pressure to perform properly.

damn...len on this board? awesome! thats all i can say. Thats something that never crossed my mind actually. I never thought about how high the fuel pressure would be at full boost, unless there was some way for the nitrous jets to see a regulated normal fuel pressure, it would cause problems.

Now that my engine is built(JE and Crower) i plan on running turbo and nitrous...though its probably a while down the road, dont have the $$$ for the turbo just yet. anyways, ill just use it at the track or when i want to beat someone REAL bad. ill use the same wet kit i have now, ill also upgrade the injectors, but just for the boost, not the nitrous. im not using my current 75-shot either, ill dial it down to a safer 50. i have a question also...at what boost level are upgraded injectors suggested? id like to boost 12psi once i get the turbo kit, thanks!

Wet nitrous doesn't care about injectors (directly anyway) Only matters if the system causes fuel pressure to drop. It crossed my mind and pondering wether to run both or not. Not that you would hurt anything but as fuel pressure goes up with boost you will start to run excessively rich as more fuel is pushed through the nitrous fuel jet (while nitrous injection remains constant). With a low ratio regulator and low boost I'd give it a try. 45-65psi is probably fine for nitrous but that would require a 1:1 or at worst 1:2 regulator which then would require big injectors which then would require lowering base fuel pressure. Too much sh*t to think about to tune it properly. Just to do it without blowing up probably isn't that hard. Best way really would be engine manaegent system with nitrous trigger (to manage fuel through the injectors) or seperate nitrous fuel system. Which ever way you do it is gonna be expensive to keep fuel pressure steady for nitrous (I'm still gonna try the sh*t. Somebody has to be running boost dependant regulators and nitrous). Possibly the venom system might work since it manipulates the injectors pulse width. Anyway I wont be doing it as soon as I thought.

Hrmm.
Good point Len. I have been thinking the large injector route and a 1:1 regulator to keep the fuel pressure down but yeah, that can be a major issue running high boost and nos.

Hey! Thanks guys. Well first thing I have 2 wet kits so I dont need to change the injectors yet. My goal is to beat this turbo Civic Si around here that is putting out about 330hp to the wheels. I have the HRC hit with the 2 fuel pumps and fuel pressure riser. I figure if before I race I could turn the pressure up. I have a 95 so I get fuel off the service port. I am going to try it i will let everyone know if it works. The engine is still in the shop and will be out next week.

A lively conversation..love to see it!
NOS and HRC turbos are a good mix, as evidenced by Len's 10.5 second, 140 MPH Street Neon 420A. Lest you think his setup is unaffordable, rest assured that it is not, nor are variations of it that we can apply to existing HRC turbosystem equipped cars.
For those HRC customers who would like consultation on how to do it properly, call me on our Tech Support line or email me. I will be out of town until this coming Tuesday racing our seven second, 187 MPH Streetbike, so hang in there for a few days.
Our RS may soon also see a shot of 'da Juice'. Unfortunately, the DSM Shootout won't let me spray in DSM Eliminator FWD, but that does not stop me from spraying everywhere else...a ten second full street RS would be most fun!
