50447, Most important Gauge? Posted by Collente, Jun-13-03 05:09 AM
What is the most important gauge after EGT/AirFuel/Fuel/Boost? Should I get oil pressure or Oil temp or Water Temp? TIA!

from a tuning aspect, EGT most definitely

boost is most important.
why you ask? you don't need an air/fuel or egt to see how you car is running, check the spark plugs and listen for detonation. you dont need an oil pressure gauge because if you pull the line going to your turbo off for just a sec you can see if it has oil..
granted i have just about all the gauges you would want to get.. but from a broke person's stand point i would go for just the boost gauge and keep the boost at the suggested limits.

very true. sorry, i just assumed that everyone would have a boost gauge if they went turbo. you definitely need a boost gauge! egt should be your next one tho!

oil pressure gauge, if your oil pump is about to quit on you, you might notice a pressure drop and you might can shut it down before you do damage.

EGT is best for daily driving monitoring. You can get a true sense (almost real time and without blinky or quickly-flasing digital numbers) of how your turbo setup is doing.
For a true tuning session, a wide-band a/f meter is the way to go (coupled together with your egt).
I also wondered about the same thing you did....fuel or oil first? From my perspective, I chose oil gauge first because i can use my OBD-2 datalogger to find out how my fuel trims are (I dont even have a fuel pressure gauge and i do fine without it. _________________ Vinnie Lima vinnie.lima@jvllogistics.com AIM: Kiku888 1997 Chrysler Sebring "Silver XTC" I4 420a w/ HRC Stage 2.45 w/ FMIC 14.7@97 mph@6psi Proud member of the ASOG BoOsT JuNkIe Crew

Since you have all the basic gauges--boost, egt, fuel, a/f--the other important gauges are oil pressure, water temp (instead of the oem needle gauge) or oil/tranny temp gauge.

Nick in my opinion you should def go with the oil pressure. I blew an oil line to my cooler awhile back and the only thing that saved me was my op guage. You have no idea how quickly your motor can dump all its oil (my car actually hold almost 7 quarts). It dumped every bit in a matter of seconds at a stop light. I have since changed all lines possible to stainless. After that guage I would probably go with fuel pressure. It really helps to know what your fuel pressure is at under boost. I have 7 guages oil pressure, oil temp, fuel pressure, water temp,egt,a/f and boost pressure. With all of these guages it has been pretty easy for me to feel/see things going on with the car. late mike

As I always say, there are 2 mods that will triple the reliability of a 2GNT. First is a safed differential (might as well toss in a Phantom Grip at the same time), and an oil pressure gauge. When most people hose something in their engine bay, what is it? Usually a rod bearing, or their differential explodes. Those two mods can prevent all of that. Actually, now that I think about it, the phantom grip could increase reliability, as it would reduce the differential slip during wheelspin conditions. This is what causes thepin to expand and seize into the spider gear, which is what causes the retaining pin to break. So I guess that safing brackets plus a PG or New Skool SID would really improve the reliability of the transmission, tenfold, for most people. But I go off topic. An oil pressure gauge will do a better job og protecting your motor then any other gauge. So get that. Now. What are you still reading this for? Hurry over to www.summitracing.com.
