50090, Turbo Cleaning / Rebuilding Questions.... Posted by jdeyo, Jun-07-03 12:05 PM
As I posted earlier, I am the proud owner of a free AiR T3 Turbo from 85 Saab. I have started to take apart the housings and clean it up. This turbo is oil cooled only and I used some carb cleaner to clean off the turbine and compressor wheels and clean out the oil passages. As I sprayed carb cleaner into the center section, I noticed that it would leak out on the compressor side around the base of the wheel. This is bad right? Looks like I will need a rebuild kit.
My next question involves the rebuilding part. I know that when I take the compressor wheel off the shaft I will have to mark is orientation with the shaft so that it will remain balanced when I put it back together. What is a suitable way to mark it. Pencil, pen, etc.? Most things get removed by the carb cleaner I am using to clean everything.
While I am doing all of this I am having my turbine housing Jet Hot 2000 Coated both inside and out, but what should I do with the center section? I do not think I can have that coated or need to, but can I use some 2000 degree enamel paint to make it look a little better? I do know about the copper gasket spray but I want something more permanent.

the copper sealant is pretty permanent it just doesnt look copper after awhile. Turns gunmetal. You can always mark with a sharpie...carb cleaner or my favorite, break cleaner will clean all that crap off
