49625, What to do with the poo Autometer EGT Probe
Posted by etx, May-28-03 11:39 AM
I got the Autometer street egt gague / probe. Wow does this thing suck ass. After calling autometer the tech guys says its the probe, if i want it to react better i need to break out the credit card and get a $100 probe. piss poor. Has anyone else ran into this problem? I want accurate egt readings, but would rather not spend $100 on another probe, Is thier a cheaper one that will get accurate readings? thanks!

not to take away from your question , but how long does a probe usually last?

I've heard good things(fast and accurate) about the Westach probes. http://www.westach.com/products.htm

I second the westach probe comments.

This is about the clamp-type EGT probe under accessories? Does it work with just the autometer ultralite gauge?

I don't have a problem with mine. I mounted it in the #3 turbo mani runner and it reacts pretty quick.

hrm, mabye you got the good one. Im mad i got the AM gague and probe kit with a crap probe when i could have gotten the greddy one for the same price, with a good probe! My friend has one on his 300zx and it reacts quick.

One thing i worry about buying one of those Westach probes is the output may be different than the AM one so the gague will read wrong. And i cant find any specs to match up. The AM tech said the probe will output 4.09 mV at 120 digrees F.

still nothing on the AM probe x(

Don't feel bad man, I went thru 2 AM probes in about a 3 week time period. They tried to blame it on me, but I knew better. Listen to these guys and go with the Westach, I did and it works great!

I have an autometer EGT with probe and I don't have any problems at all. (phantom series) I mounted it in front of #2.

Team Rip EGT probes are vey fast. This is what I, and all of the turbo guys in my area use. They are cheap, about $45, and react very fast. Just replace the autometer probe with this one and you are good to go. The guys at team rip are very smart as well. Give them a call and talk to them if you don't want to take my word for it. ogh yeah so do you guys think the westach probe will give me accurate readings connected to the autometer egt gague? the westach may not put out as much voltage and skew the readings. I really need to get this figured out so i can tune the car correctly! :thumbsup *tanks!

The Team Rip probe does fit in the hole tapped for the Autometer one. Nice to have a working EGT gauge now :thumbsup

I have an autometer pyrometer gauge/probe kit and it worx great. I don't know what your talking about slow reaction because when I step on it I see that sucka go up pretty fast. No complaints here. Paid like 150 for mine.

Autometer makes (or sells) three different kinds of probes. For the good one alone they want $130. I paid $130 for the gague and probe so i got the shit probe.

Yeah the team rip probe does fit, sorry I didnt let you know sooner. Haven't been on the board in a while. Yeah it is nice to have a working egt readout, and to know all those times i hit the gas before i could have been over 1600 and not known it. Now the thing reacts as fast as my tach.

Now the question is, will the Team Rip probe fit the Autometer screw on adapter fitting? I dont have my EGT probe clamped on the mani, I have the weld on bung welded to my mani, then the the screw on fitting goes on the probe then tightens down on the bung...I supppose this wont work?

No, if i understand what your saying it will work. The threads on the team rip probe are the exact same as the ones on the bayonet style AM probe. My mani was tapped too large, so i have a reducer fitting in there and then the probe. The rip one fit in just like the AM one. Plug and play! muahah

ok, so the TR probe has a flange on the end of it, to rest the small nut that can go on it, to screw donw onto the AM bung that is welded on my mani? I think i get what your're saying hehe..There are no actual threads on my AM probe, there is just a nut that fits over the probe, and rests on a flange on the probe, and then tighens down onto the bung on the mani..
