i dont doubt that with some tunning on the more efficeint, less polution side we can pass. But in Cali we got visual inspections. No CARB sticker, is a no pass.

if it doesn't pass, then when you guys get pulled over and the cops write you up for it, what do you do? pay the ( i swear) million dollar fine? or what do you do? take it off? (i live in california too by the way). thank you.

49172, RE: pass smog? Posted by Vinh766, May-19-03 09:08 PM
so what do you guys do?

49173, RE: pass smog? Posted by Clay, May-19-03 09:27 PM
Isn't happening with a turbo kit. Cough . . . slip the smog dude a 200 bill . . . cough, might do the trick. I'm pretty sure someone knows someone but they aren't willing to share. For fear of losing their hook up due to someone spreading the word.
Off topic but which city are you from?
>get pulled over and the cops write you up for it, what do you do?
Think prevention, don't drive like you stole the car. If you do get pulled over, your SOL hardcore style!

k, this is the story. - i was speeding out of a school zone, but i guess he looked pass that and was going to give me a speeding ticket for my 5.25 tip apexi exhuast. and i told him it was factory stated "street and strip legal" (even though it isn't) - so then he tells me to pop my hood, he sees a CAI (i didn't have any carb stickers for it) so he wrote me up for it telling me to go get it fixed - i put back my stock filter and everything else, go to court, and they tell me i can't fix it cuz the cop marked "NO" under "correctable" (what a bitch) - so i go out and buy a legal CAI and go back to court and told the judge that i had that intake the whole time, its just that the cop never asked for my carb sticker. - so they judge believed me and told me that i had to get it cleared by the CHP (which have the tools to test it) - i go to the CHP, he takes what look at my car, pops my hood, and goes "hell no, that's not legal" even though i was like, but look at the carb sticker. then hey goes "you know what? i can't believe you come in here with ur tint like that also (i have 35% tint all around)" so he writes me up for that and sends me home w/o clearing my intake. - so now i gotta go to a BAR Referee and get it clear which is like 30 mins away daymnit x(

49197, RE: pass smog? Posted by Chamuko, May-20-03 11:32 AM
my friend manages to get his 89 rustang smogged. Sais it costs him a lot. Im guessing about 100. I live in montebello for all you southern cali ppl. ;) For the Carb and CHP he should let you slide on it. Thats what the CARB sticker is for. Oh and yeah ANY tint is illegal in Cali. Just roll your windows down when ever you go to the inspection station or you get pulled over. Go to the CHP station on washington in los angeles. I go there, they let me slide on a lot of things, its an older guy most of the time and hes understanding. For one he sees a lot of that in LA and second, he an old school hot rodder. Try talking to them sometimes it helps;)

49219, RE: pass smog? Posted by Vinh766, May-20-03 03:07 PM
i know most of the tricks already (i hope) i did roll down my window when i came to the CHP but he saw my back window, and he was like... im giving you one. i didn't want to complain, cuz it would be pointless cuz he would make me roll up my front ones. by the way (the law is you can have any tint you want what so ever from the drivers shoulders and back, the fron't can't have anything. i might try that LA one some time. thank you. and please let us know if you can get hook ups on that other smog one, 100 dollars is worth it, its better then taking everything off and smogging it.

dang cali sux ass screw that new smog dyno crap too, dodge the bullet last time but what am i gonna do now. Lemme know if you can get a hook up :) got 1 and half more years to go. took mine to the ref and they wouldn't shut up about having no carb numbers and stuff. Who cares bout that stuff its what comes out of the tailpipe that counts.

do you all think 100 is even enuff?
i don't mind losing 100 every two years as oppose to removing everything but you'd think a smog-guy would totally rape you for cash.

49321, RE: pass smog? Posted by ner947, May-22-03 06:39 AM
wow. you cali guys have it BAD. if i got pulled over by some cop and he told me to pop my hood i'd either:
1. pretend that the hood latch was broken 2. pop it and be like "i don't give a shit if it's legal or not. i somehow acquired a legit inspection sticker and beat the system so far. fine me bitch." 3. kick the emmissions gestpo in the balls and tell him to go and pull himself over. i bet most oggolie american V8's pollute way more than any well-tuned import.
ha. 2 and 3 are fake, but they're still kinda funny. my plan is that if anyone makes me pop my hood i slip them a $20 and tell them that everything's all set. i hide my "oh shit someone's gonna poke me" fund in that little unit in the center console that flips down. off topic, i've never figured out what it's really for.
i'm glad that i don't have to deal with hardcore gestapos like that here in massachusetts. no one has ever asked me to pop my hood, and i passed inspection with my stage 1 turbo kit last november, but i wasn't smogged. here in massachusetts they only smog you every other year, so this november the shit is gonna hit the fan. there are a few evil inspection stations around here that won't inspect any cars with a "sport muffler". basically, if it has a tip, or if it's louder than a stock 98 toyota camry, it's "sport" according to this one guy. i bet he's just sick of the local hoodlums with honda civics and fart cans, which is reasonable. after shopping around for an hour or so i found a shady inspection station. the guy there didn't have any idea what was happening, i bet he was on drugs or something. he asked me to rev it up a little to make sure it wasn't too loud, so i revved it to like 1100 rpm's and he was like "whatever". sooooo good. they only had an issue because i didn't have a front plate on, so i duct taped it on for the inspection and tore it off right as i was leaving. ha.

Here its everyother year. In between we just get our stickers in the mail. :) We dont have any worries besides the sniff test and visual for the exhaust system.

shit, all i have now is my 5.25 tiped apex'i exhaust, you think he will pass me?
|
49378, RE: pass smog? Posted by Malliciouz1, May-22-03 10:17 PM
nope...your screwed. when they tell you to go to a REF, the REF is pretty much the god of all inspectors. he will pull up a reference manual with every parts there is for your car, if anyone of those parts are not present during your inspections, u fail. but with exhaust, some REF are more cool with it, as long as its not more than 96-98db on the sounds....or what you can do is sell your car to your friend for $1 and have them sell it back to you for $1..at least they can't smog or inspect it for another year:o
|
49398, RE: pass smog? Posted by Vinh766, May-23-03 11:18 AM
i was in luck guys, the ref sayed anything behind the cat is non of there businss ::sigh:: so my exhaust is passed, and i passed smog too, but he failed me. i had my a/f meter hooked up, and he saw the wires, and he said "no go" wat a biotch, so i have to take it off and rescheduale another appointment now. note guys, if you ever have to go to a ref, prepare ur car for a full cavity search, literally, they literally check every single little detail.
