49081, 3 questions post turbo install .... Posted by techboy, May-18-03 06:39 PM
Well, after a month of my car not being drivable I finally turned the key at 8:17 last night (I did some other things along the way). After a few more hours of final adjustments I now have joined the boosted club. HRC stage II w/ FMIC. Anyway, I have just 3 questions post install:
1 - Does the check valve coming off the FPR just vent to the atmosphere? 2 - There are 2 nipples, one coming off the turbo itself, and one coming off the wastegate?? (I'm not sure if that's what it is) below it - do any lines run to them? I have 4" silicone line connecting them right now b/c I couldn't find anything about them. 3 - I have an EGT gauge, but once I had the car running I realized I had no idea where it should be. I saw b/t 900 and 1000 degrees at idle and as much as 1500 degrees at 8lbs of boost. Where should the numbers be?
And .... my two comments post install:
1- The Hahn directions regarding the fuel relay suck! Way too vauge. 2- Dang that fuel pump is loud!!
To those of you who contributed to this venture ... thank you.

yeah they are supposed to be connected

"1 - Does the check valve coming off the FPR just vent to the atmosphere?"
Yes it does.
"2 - There are 2 nipples, one coming off..."
If im understanding you correctly, those 2 nipples you speak of should have a hose running from one to the other. A boost controller goes in the middle if you want.
"3 - I have an EGT gauge, but once I had...."
900 degrees at idle is a tad hot, but not a big deal. If it starts breaking 1000, then there is a problem, check your fuel pressure and make sure its around 55psi at idle. 8lbs of boost and 1500 degrees? Thats too hot in my opinion. Check your fuel pressure under boost, it should be at around 100psi for 8lbs of boost.
You should really check your injectors. I was running too hot no matter how rich i tried to make my system with stock injectors. I pulled mine out and realized 2 were cracked slightly. I replaced them with 310cc injectors and everything cooled off greatly.
I was running 10lbs of boost at 1500 degrees, so all in all, you are running a tad hot in my opinion. I really don't think turbo kits are designed to use stock injectors even though companies say they will work.

Yeah, I seem to be running 60 PSI at idle no matter how I adjust it. I kinda thought the EGT numbers seemed a little hot myself. I'm going to play with the FPR a little bit more today after work and see if I can't get it to idle at a lower PSI and then see how that effects my EGT numbers.
I kinda figured from what I've read on the board before that the injectors where going to have to go. You say 310cc. What size are the ones we run stock?

well.. some people say they are 190cc, some people say they are 220.

Ok, I had time with the FPR this afternoon. I actually was able to tweak it so it holds at about 45PSI at idle. Man that thing is sensitive. You can practically stall your car moving it a 1/4 turn. So after a half hour of playing with that and finalizing other things I took her out for a spin and blew a hose clamp off the FMIC. What a pain in the neck to reach them after the front bumpers back on. So that was another hour of fun and games ... but she seems to running good now.

Congrats and welcome to the wonderful world of boost!
Humm..... interesting about your fuel pressure and egt's. Mine does the same thing. Should we get new injectors or just keep it how it is? Mine has been like this for about 2 months now.

i honestly think you guys should get some injectors

Yeah, I knew going into this there were going to be a few things to upgrade right away. Now that I got the turbo finished up last weekend, it's time to order a few more things. Here's my list of add-ons/upgrades:
1- Injectors (Looks like everyone is saying I need to get 310cc) 2 - Missing Link 3 - Turbo Timer
Anybody know of anything else I would need to hold me over until this winter when I pull my engine for a rebuild?

your EGT's seem fine. your EGT probe is before the turbo on the man1fold, right? 800-900 is what my idle temperature is, sometimes when i'm hardcore downshifting it will go down to around 700. 1500 is perfectly fine, just don't let it go much above 1575 or so. 1600 is where the "you're gonna kill shit real fast" zone begins. remember, all EGT gauges have lag so assume that the tempatures are 25-50 degrees higher when the tempatures are going up. personally, i will let off the boost when the tempatures reach around 1575 or so. this happens pretty fasy for me with the 1G SMIC at 12 psi and .93 for oxygen sensor voltages. i really need to get a FMIC.
speaking of FMIC's, i bet yours looks really pimp! wish i had one.
yes, the accel/HRC "raped pig" fuel pump is indeed quite loud. you'll have to live with it, the noize seemed to go away once fuel pressures go up. for me at least. installing a higher flow in-tank pump will reduce the sound level of that blasted thing to a reasonable level. i have some type of ebay walbro pump (no idea on the flow level, but i didn't care. it said "walbro" and it's better than stock therefore it's all good) and it definately made a huge difference with the fuel pump sound. at idle when my fuel pressures are at like 15-18 psi, the pumps are loudest, and you can hear the 2 different pumps humming at 2 different tones. it sounds pretty cool actually.
EDIT: yeah, the 30lb (310 cc/min) injectors would be a very good investment. you will be able to run much lower fuel pressures. instead of having 120 psi of fuel at 10 psi of boost, you'll only need like 80 or 90 psi of fuel, i think. don't quote me on that though, i'm just guessing.
something else to "hold you over" until the winter rebuild? hmmm... turbo grind cams would be fun. the 2.5" ERT downpipe would be good too. get rid of your cat if you haven't done so already and if you can cook up an innovative and sketchey way of passing smog if so required. but first, get a S-FMU in addition to the stuff that you're already planning on getting. the S-FMU is probably the best fully adjustable regulator out there (next to the Aeromotive 1:1 unit), hands down. it holds rock steady fuel pressures, unlike the CrapTech unit that comes with the HRC kit. i blame that thing for the death of my stock piston ring landings. don't forget to buy the bleed/needle valve and the special 10/32 NPT fitting that goes into the bleed/needle valve enabling you to put on a check valve so it doesn't suck in air in vacuum. this will allow you to adjust your boosted fuel curve much like the needle valve on the top of the CrapTech FPR supplied with the HRC kit.

Hey, thanks so much for taking the time to punch in all this information ^^^^. Your about the 5th person who told me to get the Vortech SFMU (including my other posts). I had a feeling that would be the case. I just wanted to get the turbo on and running before I worried about other upgrades. But I'm there now...
I have to research this Vortech SFMU thing some more. I'm not exactly sure what you mean about making sure I order the bleeder value and fitting and all that, but I believe your referring to the adjustable valve on the side on the Craptech (not the one in the center). I hate posting questions about things I know have been discussed, I'll search if first. Anyway, I'll definately add that to the list.
I put on a high-flow cat when I did the turbo install, so that ones checked off. Didn't really change the sound of the car at all .... I was surprised. Like everyone else, I will buy the ERT downpipe the day it comes out:7
Yeah, the FMIC looks great! Although, as you can barely see in my old pic, I have the Grillcraft grille, which I reinstalled with the FMIC. You have to really look to know it's there. Great sleeper :thumbsup Of course, the screaming BOV kinda gives it away.

put a high pressure in tank pump in there too. that will take care of your question 4. i can hardly hear mine once they are warmed up now...

whats the fuel pump sound like? is like annoyingly bad? i dont mind a lil noise with the car, i cant hear anything over my system anyway...

This too is a subject I don't understand. Does anyone have any pictures of their FUEL REGULATOR and where the hoses are linked to? Thank you.
