48912, spun a bearing - buying new bearings question Posted by RyaN95i4, May-16-03 08:09 AM
last night i spun a bearing, havent pulled the pan off yet, but just by the sound, im pretty sure thats what it is
anywho, i bought this motor from Pure Rage, i know he used clevite 77 bearings, but what i dont know is what size bearings he used. the crank was supposedly lightened, but i dont know where material was removed from
How will i be able to tell which size bearings to get, just mic the old one i pull out?

he probably used standard sized bearings, unless the core crank that he used for that engine had issues, at which point they grind it down and used oversized bearings, yadda yadda yadda...
i always thought when a crank is lightened/balanced, holes are drilled inward (perpindicular) to the axis of rotation on the counterweights...? right? when i got my new engine from howell the counterweights were pretty drilled out. my old stock crank had much smaller holes in it.

i just need to mic the inside diameter of the old bearings to figure out what size he used tho, right?
i guess this is the problem buying a preassembled motor...from pure rage, he said over 3 lbs was removed from the crank and it was lightened and knife-edged... 3lbs seems like a lot from just drillin out bigger holes

also, forgot to ask, w/ a new set of rod bearings, is there another break-in period?

Rod bearings don't need a break in.

^^ Second that. Also do you have to disasemble the engine to replace? Or do you just have to take the oil pan out? Nick 97RS

Typically the bearing will have a size on the back. You want to mic the crank and NOT the bearing. Drilling and welding is how cranks are lightened. Cast isn't light, so 3lbs is probably about right. "Spun" bearing is where the bearing does not have enough clamping force down upon it and it winds up spinning inside the caps. W/ spun rods I typically have the rods at least checked by a machinest to make sure the big end doesn't need resizing. That's a touchy dept. on whether you should or shouldn't have it done. Just take it somewhere reputable. You "can" pull the rods/pistons out from the bottom, but you might as well just pull the motor and take your time and do it from the top. You don't "have" to break-in bearings, but they like it a whole lot better if you at least have the car warmed up and good oil pressure before you start spinning 8k.

if u spun a bearing id be hardpressed to jut drop ina new set unless u want to spin another set.. almost every spun bearing ive seen had to have the crank or rods machined...
u need to atleast oil the bearings good and give them good oil presure warm them up but nothing major...

oh and by lightening a crank and KNIFE EDGING it, they grind material off the crank. While making the end that cuts through the air shaped like a Knife edge so it *Cuts* through the air better and is ligheter then they smooth it out and also balance the crank... along with drilling some holes...

#3 rod bearing is toast, just pulled it out this morning
there was also little metal shavings from the bearing in the pan...everything else looks ok

only other thing im worried about is their is a slight discoloration on the outside of the rod cap

so im not sure if its ok to use, or if im gonna have to go down to saenz in miami and get a new rod cap made...
heres the inside of the cap

what do u think?

got a little hot ehh? Should be fine. Can't really tell w/o looking at it in person, but I'd have it looked at and see if it needs replaced. BTW pull the rest of your rods and have them all reconditioned evenly. Esp. if somebody took the time to balance the rods. The one recond. rod will be different from the rest and they will want to have all to balance. Bring the crank for sure.

just wondering what DOES a spun bearing sound like? Reason im asking is because I have had my car sitting for about 2 months now and I go to turn her on and I hear this tapping and the car shakes. I thought it maybe was a broken engine mount from the hit, but after reading this im a little scared.

if that thing has that blueish green coloration to it you need to have it reconditioned..most likely it got to hot and "elongates" the actual hole...it wont run you more that 50 bucks at a machine shop for a 4 banger ..i just had it redone a while ago, you need to take them the crank and that rod to see if they can just polish it up or if they need to turn the crank and then you can just get oversized bearings...you may be able to get by w/ about 4 hundred dollars worth of work if you do the wrenching yourself...if you have any questions pm or email me..i had this done and can give you a heads up as to what to expect

the discoloration is only on the outside of the rodcap, not the inside where it sits against the bearing. is it ok to use still?

49051, RE: spun a bearing - buying new bearings question Posted by MR BLUNT 2gnt, May-18-03 09:33 AM
the discoloration shouldn't be on the inside...but its still hot enough if you see that to f them up..i'd have them checked by a machinest if i were you..my #4 cyl was way worse off than your pic and they were salvagable...50 dollars for a reconditioning is way better than 350 for new ones...
