what kind of fuel is everybody running on their aftermarket turbokit? i know you are supposed to run 93 but does anybody run less? good or bad results. experiences wanted. thanks!

93 is usually considered a must. some states only sell 91-92 octane which prevents the turbo from safely reaching a higher psi. higher octane fuel is needed because the higher the octane, the slower it burns, thus preventing detonation. 87 octane burns very fast, so if anyone is stupid to run 87, the fuel will burn up too quick, causing a premature combustion in the cylinder=detonation.

i have never ran with less than 93, but i have heard about it before from others... just detonates, you get pings and knocks really bad. No good for the car...

i wish i had a sunoco around here with 94 octane. we do have a few pumps near the track with 100, 110, and 120 octane though... thats pretty pricey though...

exactly what type of mixture do you use? i'm thinkin' on using this for a tank or 2 when i go upstate ny where the gas sucks.

I have a sunoco 2 minutes down the street from me. It's where I always fill up. 94 is sooo much better. My a/f fuel mixture is just more stable. And with the gas prices going down....it's gonna be a fun summer!

no. There's only enough in those little bottles to bump the octane rating by a point...thats .1 octane. So you'd go from 91 octane to 91.1 octane.

Get some toluene. It's 114 octane. Mix however much of it with the 91 to get the octane you need. Here's some examples

1 gallon toluene with 10 gallons(10:1 ratio) of 91 octane gives you 11 gallons of 93.1 octane fuel
2 gallons toluene with 10 gallons(5:1 ratio) of 91 octane gives you 12 gallons of 94.8 octane fuel
3 gallons toluene with 9 gallons(3:1 ratio) of 91 octane gives you 12 gallons of 96.8 octane fuel
4 gallons toluene with 8 gallons(2:1 ratio) of 91 octane gives you 12 gallons of 98.7 octane fuel
5 gallons toluene with 5 gallons(1:1 ratio) of 91 octane gives you 10 gallons of 102.5 octane fuel

where can you buy toluene? i found some on sciencelab.com @ 15.00 for 500 mL. if that is the going rate, 1 gallon must be quite expensive. for that cost, i would just run 91 if you are having no problems. *shrug*

That half liter is for science experiments and whatnot. You gotta find a chemical supply company to get it in quantity. There's one right in my town, looks like a big one. They have all kinds of chemicals. They sell 5 gallons for $14 and 10 gallons for $21. They also sell it in smaller quantities, but like I said, I think that's for the scientists.

Any paint supply store carries toulene. We pay roughly $25 for a 5 gallon can. Buying by the gallon costs more, but is good for convenience.

There are many other properties in race fuel that do not have anything to do with octane. Some fuels resist detonation more than others, even though they are the same octane rating.

Example: adding toulene to a mix of 93 pump gas and getting a 100 octane overall rating does not resist knock on a boosted car as getting a mix of 100 octane with 93 pump gas and VP racing C16(117 octane). There are different properties in every race fuel that is used for different applications. C16 is the sheit for turbo cars.

Toulene is great because you can carry sealed gallon cans where ever you wish and just add it to the tank when you need a boost of higher octane in the tank. This is what most of us do when going out of state and having to deal with lower octane fuel. Supra guys live by the stuff...especially if they have a big single and want to run 20+ psi daily. Sure wish we had 101 unleaded at the pump within 2 hours of Little Rock. Now that would rock.
