48306, Engine stalling after run! Posted by etx, May-07-03 11:25 AM
Hey guys. A few times this has happened to me... After a hard run at 10 psi of boost my car will stall out. It will only die if i let off the gas, otherwise it will keep running. I keep my eye on the egt, and if it starts going over 1500 ill let off the gas. I know my egt probe has some lag.. I dont know if im over heating or what. I usually just figure it over heated and will start it back up and let it idle to cool off. Do i need more gas to keep things cool? At WOT my a/f gague is at the begining of the green on my automeater, so thats probably in the .80~. My fuel trims are dead on at idle, but i have not had a chance to datalog on a run lately, i spilled beer on my laptop!! x( Any ideas!? TIA!

you're using the blinky autometer gauge to tune your turbosystem at 10 psi? shit. i bet you've already caused some damage. .80 for oxygen sensor voltage is WAY lean. i know for sure that the leftmost green LED on the blinky autometer gauge is definately a lot leaner than you want to be. you should be like .92-.94 volts at WOT, which is like the last 3 or 4 LED's to the right on the blinky autometer gauge. i HIGHLY suggest you build Corbin's A/F gauge, that's the only gauge i really look at that and my EGT gauge in boost.

Do you get CEL codes? If you're vac lines are secure, I'm thinking you might be running a little lean, or possibly ignition misfiring will cause that sporatic idle or dying after hard pulls. Be very careful for now. If you're only at the first "blinky" green, you're right at the "gray" area between perfect air/fuel ration and running lean. How high is your EGT at the top of a long pull?

>check vacum lines at idle...... > also check your Map and Maf sensor. Not really sure if the 420a has them ?

Yeah the 420a has a MAP but no MAF. Acutally i have the autometer and the apexi TT that will display the o2 sensor voltage numericaly. I guess its time to throw the smaller disk in the sfmu. I got the mopar egr blockoff kit and installed it yesterday. My egt's have droped a lot! About 100 digrees, i sugest everyone thats turbo do this. So once i get some more fuel in there should my egt's top off around 1400 or so? I usually end up letting off the gas once they reach 1500, but most of the time thats on the freeway in 5th and opening it up in 5th is really going to make the engine work and rase my egt's. Ill throw the next smaller disk in once i get home and post my findings. thanks guys!

I had the same problem at the track last night. I was running 8 psi on 110 octane race gas. Car was studdering in the staging lanes before the run. Ran a best of 14.85 right after. Try the reagular tell tales with the oil dipstick and check your catchcan if you have one. Last give it a compression check. I tune for about 1500* egt and about .96 on the digital A/F gauge.

Ok.. after a few runs on the freeway onramps today i figured something out. My autometer a/f gague is connected to my lights, so it only comes on then i turn on the lights or running lights. So i noticed that when i turn off the lights to turn of the gague the digital readout on my apexi TT goes up .1!! So i think the autometer is distorting the signal. weird. So with the a/f gague off, i used the digital readout on the TT and it was at .96-.98 at WOT. Also I have an autometer egt gague, it seems to really lag. Mabye i hit 1600 digrees before the gague had a chance to tell me, cause i got to 1400 and let off the gas in 5th gear and it started stalling again. So i pop the clutch and start it back up, it only seems to stall out if i let of the gas and let it idle. And it dies smoothly, no crazy jumps. Would some crane #14 turbo grind cams keep my egt down? I plan on installing those in the other motor im building right now. Any ideas? Ogh yeah im running 10 psi, i never had this problem at 8 psi.

Could this be a ground problem to my autometer a/f gague? I believe its grounded to the ground on the rheostat. XtremeRS what do you think?! You always seem to have some good advice for me.

Mine did this at any psi i had it at for the last 2 days. i found 1 vacuum leak, and my ic piping came apart in 1 spot just a little also because it was misfiring really bad, and would stall, i changed the spark plugs to ngk brke6's and changed the oil. between fixing that, it runs awesome now. thats at 9psi.
hope that helps... :thumbsup

Ok. well the autometer egt probe sucks ass. I think I am hiting high temps before it even tells me. Can i just replace the probe with a good one and leave the gague? Also after properly grounding my a/f and apexi TT I am geting the proper readings. I put the largest disk in the sfmu and adjusted it to ~.96 at WOT in 2nd.
So this only happens in 5th gear when i boost for a while. Is this normal? what is causeing the motor to stall? is a part geting to hot? It will only stall if i let it idle, if i leave it in gear and dont give it gas it will not stall. If I drive it like normal it will not stall, but if i hit the clutch and let it idle as i drive it will just die out. Usually i just pull over and let it idle to cool down, it will not stall after starting it if i dont hit the gas, i figured that would be the best way to cool it down. What is the best egt probe to get that i can just hook up the autometer egt gague? thanks!!

you may have a severe vacuum leak. Check your pcv pipe.

the lil pipe from the valve cover to the intake mani right by the coil pack.
