Oil and gases poured out of my crankcase breather the other day and i think its because of a cracked piston or jacked up ring. I new this was going to happen, just didnt know when. In the market for the bottom end - if anybody know anybody that can get them for a deal - let me know. Me real question is for the guys that have already done the proceedure: How much should it cost because i have no time to do it myself? How many hours should it take? Anything else that you think might help would be much appreciated. Greg? TurboRS? Wyatt?

Shouldn't take but a day to pull your engine, no more than a few days to machine and reassemble the new short block assuming all the parts are their and they are working on it full time (really only a day but you know shops). Should then take another day or two to reinstall it. Give them two weeks, more if they bull sh*t like most shops, a week if all they're doing is your car. You probably know what parts cost. I paid $150 labor to assemble the short block and attach the basically stock head(I didn't bore but stock rods required some machining to fit the pistons). $500 to remove and install the engine. Little sh*t like bearings, seals and BS will probably run you another $300 or so. So in short I'd say bring your parts, a grand and alternate transportation for at least two weeks.

Well,
I just had my block rebuilt aftem my crank breather was spitting oil....(a bad ring)
I replaced the stock stuff with
-JE pistons (HRC)
-Crower billet rods
-Total seal rings

I had the block bored and the crankshaft polished/ and the valves re-seated and the head cleaned up pretty well. $560
engine breakdown, removal and install including reinstall of turbo kit $500
After the gaskets the oil and all those damn expensive internals I paid about 2700 for the whole job.
Of course...I had the whole tune up done at the same time...example: replaced alternator,oil pump,water pump, stock pullys, all belts....that kinda stuff.

I just want to put p/r/rings new studs and an unbreakable head gasket. I already have the parts. Just need reliable labor. I would think 500 bucks to be good since people charge that much to install the turbo kit alone. Where do you live? What is re-seating the valves do?

$500 is only good if you are doing most of the work yourself and sending off just the block. If you want a shop to do everything, it will be way more than $500 unless you have some kind of mad hookup. Oh, and expect the shop to take much longer. They always do.

Murix is right, just to machine it and assemble it is around $600+. Clark Engines in Marietta Ga is the best.
Or you could do what I did, and have custom 8:5.1 pistons made in stock size(no boaring needed) and have the shop just hone out and replace the pistons rods and rings while the motor stayes in the car. :)
It can be done, I did it and am running very high boost now for a couple of weeks now and no problems.

hey MWC, i would have thought that the pistons you have would actually be safer, arent the regular pistons 9.0:1?
if they are wouldnt the lower compression ones you have be safer to run high boost on? i would like to get the same kind of thing done to save labor costs but you did say you were running fine for a few weeks, as if to imply that they were unsafe compared to the bore-requiring JE's. help me out here. i will probably end up having to drive to marietta because i think shops here, if i could find one to do it, would charge me a new asshole to do it

$500 is just to remove and install the engine R&R not including any assembly tear down. I too bought custom stock bore pistons and I knew the guy pretty well by then (already installed a previous engine and numerous clutches/trannys ect) so I paid $150 for assembly and minor machining. Plus the car was in the shop for 6wks just sitting.

I don't get charged for labor on install because our sponsored shop is doing it.. but that's the mad hookup price from the mahine shop in case you're trying to get a ball-park figure. The machine shop did work for formula race cars along with some of the widely known cars in the quick 8 bracket such as viet lams and Ed burgenholtz 500+ HP honda motors. They worked on Neons before and were not new to the 420A. They were boring a block for custom pistons going into a custom twin turbo Dodge Viper when I stopped by for a visit. I need to get the name of the shop.

Actualy Cyan, that could be correct, I merly did it to save the labor cost and down time. The place I recomended in Marietta Ga is the best machine shop I have seen. But the shop that did my work is called CNNP racing (Captain Nemos Neons Performance)here in sunny Florida. I at first questioned the idea of this proceedure but Nemo inssured me that there would be no problems. That being said I let him go at it, and to be honest I am glad(thus far) I did. I am approaching 1,500 miles and am currently boosting 18psi on the street, and she is running great. :)
I must say though the noisy Wiesco pistons take a while to get used to. They sound like a "Deisiel" engine, at first start up and then quit down after a few minutes. If you do go to Clark Engines tell Jim Ray sent you. He did my head work, and contrary to what people say here, I got huge gains out of it. He has been NHRA motors for years and knows his stuff, as well as a few fellow 4G63 brothers motors and has come up with a way to address the crank walk issue that they came down with. So far his method not only fixed the problem but my boy is boosting 23 psi from what I hear and no sign of the nasty crank walk anymore.

Why does it sound like a Deisiel??? I would like to do that, but not if it sounds like a deisiel...I'm still getting use to my fuel pump:P Does boaring to fit those other pistons eliminate that problem of sounding like a deisiel??? I am going to do this in the future and I don't wanna change the sound of my engine...especially to the sound of a deisiel!!!

Mine engine sounded different when I upgraded the first time. Not like a deisel.. but definately different. It went away after time. When you rebuild.. expect some noise at first. All engines are like that.

As I mentioned in the earlier post, I dont know all the facts, just that he has come up with a promising solution (thus far) for the crank walk. I know of a couple of 4G63'ers that had crank walk, took him the engine and got it back with some serious HP and no sign of crank walk. Of coarse only time will tell. If you want an in depth explanation of what was done, hit him up. Although he might not want to give his secrets away. :)
