46945, first startup today! it started!! but got probs!! Posted by BattleZEclipse98, Apr-17-03 02:07 PM
hi guys.
after a few cranks it started! so i guess the car doesn't totally hate me. anyway here are the problems i have.
NO fuel pressure on Fuel pressure gauge. raspy low-pitch squeal/whine coming from MAP/Missing Link intermittantly.. kind of like nails on a chalkboard but not as bad. and their seems to be a very quiet hiss somewhere - maybe a vac line? white smoke (but thank god thats just the copper gasket spray on the manifold :-)
I am pretty sure the in-line is pumping because I heard it making noise. I thought it was supposed to be really loud when it runs like everyone has said, but I ASSUME (ehh?) that its because it is only idleing.
fuel was in fact running thru the fuel press gauge because I had a slight leak I quickly fixed at the Tee, so it's getting there as far as I can tell.
turning the static on the SFMU doenst seem to do anything, although i only maybe turned it three turns or less, not sure how many it takes. (i have 30# injectors).
here are my readings
EGT - 850 deg boost - 15 Hg FP - 0 psi
i have to say, without any ajustments my reading seem pretty good, i can't complain, they could be so much worse.
please help! check it out

Recheck all your vaccum line connections. Make sure you connected everything correctly to the SFMU, also check to make sure the missing link is securely tightened, if its loose you will hear a wierd noise :)
BTW, is that the HRC kit or is that motofools manifold? Man I really need to make a downpipe.

thanks for the reply
It is the HRC manifold. I will take apart the missing link/map first thing tomorrow. after thinking about it a while, I think the hiss might be coming from the vac port on the passenger side because I remember I was having problems attaching it that I never returned to. but the big problem i have is the 0 PSI on the FP gauge. what gives!
and what SHOULD the in-line sound like at idle? as it is right now it sounds like its doing its job with minimal noise: would the car even start if the in-line was not getting power?
SFMU setup - test port to 1/4" tee - tee's to sfmu and FP gauge. inlet connected to side of fmu, tank return on the bottom with 5/16" 2.72" disc (second largest disc) and ring with the 1/4" gap.

15inHG is low - you probably have a vacuum leak. i run 15 with the AC on..
If you're getting 0 pressure on the fuel pressure gauge, but the car runs, the gauge is probably broken.
The inline sounds like a small jet engine. it WHINES. if you don't hear a pronounced whine at idle, the pump probably isn't working correctly.

the hrc pump litterly sounds like an airplane when your boarding it. I don't think your pump is working, check your conections and make sure they are on there well.

i usually have about 16-18 hg with my car but i'm runnging low compression.
you DON'T have your valve cover breather plumbed back into your filter do you? If you do then please take that out now, you will have oil all over/in your turbo.
edit: i don't know i just didn't edit my other post. oh well

Just to be sure: You have the fuel line coming from the fuel rail test port, going into the SFMU port that is on the side of the SFMU, and the bottom port on the SFMU is going to the fuel return line, going back to the gas tank? Are you sure you have manifold vacuum going to the SFMU? Double check all your vac lines, esp if you hear hissing. It could be a shoddy gauge too..

the vac line i suspected was bad is the one that is attached to the sfmu. so i will check that out tomorrow. would not having the vac line set up correctly cause these problems?
i do have the breather going into the filter, but you say oil will wind up in there? where would you like me to put the breather hose on?
yeah i'm sure you are right about the inline pump, the sounds i was hearing were probably just the intank pumping thru. damn, thats the one thing i was hoping wasnt screwed up. i had tapped into the black wire with the blue line to go into the relay, but now I will have to double check it.
edit: does anyone else suspect a bad FP gauge, also?

>i do have the breather going into the filter, but you say oil >will wind up in there? where would you like me to put the >breather hose on?
well you shouldn't get much oil out of the breather as long aas the engine is in good working condition, however, i would still route the line to an oil catch can.
>edit: does anyone else suspect a bad FP gauge, also?
well think about it this way... if the car is running, then it certainly isn't on 0psi of fuel, so either the gauge is bad, or the fuel isn't getting to it and you said that it was, so the gauge must be bad. and yes, the sfmu takes a couple of turns to react to teh pressure change. the screw isn't very sensitive, which is good for fine tuning.
to make sure though... you are running the small dark spring, right? not that that would have anything to do with hthese problems, you just didn't list it before.

yes the small dark spring.
i'll let you know how my trouble shooting goes tomorrow.
on second thought, i'll just put it back to NA... yeah right.

You're lucky if your in-line doesn't make that much noise (or something's wrong with it :9). Mine constantly sounds like the same annoying buzzing and occasionally you'll hear it rasp a bit. What a noisy POS.
