is this a feed line or a return line to the block. gonna use it to cool turbo. and where is everyone runnning the out line back to? the lower radiator line? thanks

I think that line in front of the head is the feed for the heater core. If it is, then according to the FSM it is always feed coolant - no matter if the engine is hot or cold. If you notice, it wraps around the driver's side of the head and kind of joins-up with a similar tube. Follow that tube back down towards the radiator and it joins with the lower radiator hose. I'm pretty sure that one is the heater return. I was planning to use these to feed and return the coolant for my turbo. Is that the right way?

Yep, you got it right. The line by the head is the feed, and the other one is the return. These lines bypass the thermostat, so your heater warms up quick when the motor is cold. I think using those lines would be fine for a turbo.. 420Avenger has it done, i'm sure he can add some input. I know he has replied with his setup, to many posts before.

Does anyone know what the maximum temperature of these hard lines reach? I'm trying to choose a good coating to make them look nice.

To be honest Tim, its not really necessary. I mean if you want to then go for it, but most people do not hook up the coolant lines.
As a matter of fact, I know of a guy that boils his coolant when he hooks up the coolant lines... lol.

dont really know, but i am using red high temp motor paint on my piping. We will see in a few days how well it holds up. Used it on the main hard line going to the water pump, the heater lines, and also my IC piping. Should look pretty sweet.

well, so you saying that adding water cool for the turbo is useless? Only oil is fine? But I thought having coolant and oil is the best.
ALso, I still don't konw this. I have 4 holes on my turbo Small 16G turbo. And I still don't konw which one is for oil and which one is for coolant. Thanks guys. Also which one is for feed and return?

I don't have my water lines hooked up currently, but shoot it can't hurt......the hrc, and starr kits don't require water to help cool the turbo.... I will proboly do it to mine just cause it will look cool :)

On my 14b(should have the same cartridge), the oil feed and return are cenered in the cartridge, while the coolant holes are offset(toward the top). The oil feed has a threaded fitting, while the return has a flanged fitting(2 bolt flange). Both of my coolant holes are threaded, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter which way you use them - inlet/outlet or outlet/inlet - as long as you feed into one and return from the other. Basically, my turbo came off a 1g which incorperated water coolant lines - so mine are already tapped. Not sure about this but I think MHI ships the centers with untapped coolant holes, so the one difference may be that your coolant holes may not have threads or be plugged altogether, so you may have to drill/tap them if you want to water cool it.

hey matt(420avenger), if you see this can you post what type of hose barb you used when you tapped into that ~5" piece of hose to the left of the thermostat? i can't seem to find any type of fitting or barb that is short enough to not extend into the thermo housing. thanks
also, while we're on topic, which way does the upper rad hose flow? is that coolant flowing into, or out of the rad? actually, i just thinking about it, it seems like it would have to be flowing into the rad, correct?

Coolant flows into the radiator from the upper pipe.

Neither could I ;) I had to cut about an inch off of the hardline. I got the barbed tees from Lowes. I am using 5/8"ID heater hose so the tees are either 1/2" or 5/8"

Okay, I have seen people T the heater line on the section above the ex manifold, and then t the section on the lower line. if you take into account how the coolant flows, it will flow from thermostat housing into the heater line into the heater core and out into the lowe radiator hard pipe. Okay, if you t these 2 places you will get rediculously little flow. now the coolant will choose the path of least resistance which is through the heater core. what i did was to cut the hard line on the bottom junction and ran a line from the heater core output hardline in to the turbo and out of the turbo and back into the hardline that connectos to the lower radiator hose. this forces all the coolant that flows through the heater core through the turbo and it gives continuous flow through it. in my opinion, this is the most effective way to do this. lates james

Once again James - that is a great idea. Incorporating it into the heater return line instead of just bypassing the core. Yeah, that'll give it constant flow. Good thing I haven't gotten any of the coolant fittings/lines yet, looks like my plans just changed. You seriously are the man Jamesman. :thumbsup

check it out here are some pics, all AN fittings with steel braided line. it shows how i routed it, the thing that is cool is that if you want some extra cooling all you need to do is turn on your after a hard run while your car is counting down.
 both the upper and lower kinda unclear

so you cut the hardline near the egr and rerouted the old route throught the turbo as in the diag, correct? btw thanks for the pics.

that's basically it, i ran AN-6 line. Use an AN-6 tube nut and sleeve and flare the end of the heater pipe and screw it into an AN-6 M to M fitting then connect the AN-6 braided line to it. i edited the picture, you don't have to cut the lower connection if you choose to use rubber line, but the temps at the turbo will kill the rubber line quickly, that is why i chose to use AN-6 fittings and steel braided line.

Hi, just a quick question, since I am installing my turbo soon also. and I am kinda confused about which is coolant and which is oil...etc..for the turbo.
For the above ^^^ diagram... is that connect for the oil feed and return line?? or for the coolant line???

coolant lines, which are not manditory. you don't have to hook them up. that diagram is a diagram of the coolant system from the fsm.

i am using the stock radiator, i haven't really noticed any difference in the measurable temp of the coolant, i think because the ratio of coolant flowing to the engine is much more than the fluid going through the heater core so it don't really heat things up too much, the nicest thing is now i can turn on the heater fan while i am cooling down the car and it will bring the turbo temp down.

What size are those NPT fittings into the turbo, and what type of fittings work into those cut into coolant lines?
