Sorry. I have this info in another thread, but I thought it might be usefull to sort the pics a little different and edit the content a little, in a more writeup'ish kind of style. :7

I just got my 1g SMIC installed a couple of days ago. For now, I'm just driving around with the inlet and outlet taped up. I'm waiting for my 105 amp Mig welder to arrive so I can make the piping - it just shipped yesterday(and I can't wait for it, I've always wanted a welder :9 ). I already figured out what all pipes/couplers I need and where to get them. I'm going to use all mandrel bent piping. It'll be 2-1/4" from the compressor to inlet. A short mid-pipe from the outlet to the big hole that used to be for the intake. That one'll go from 2-1/4" to 2-1/2. Then the upper pipe to the TB will be all 2-1/2". Why so big on the upper pipe? Well, I don't like the idea of using a pipe that is smaller then my TB. The 2-1/2" piping has a 2-3/8" ID, just like my 60mm Jeep TB.

Inlet: I'm using the 90 degree bend as the inlet.


Outlet: The 45 will be the outlet.


Bottom Bracket: I used 2 of the bracket holes to actually mount the IC. The one here is the first one that I made. The first thing I needed to do was hack up the outlet area(right below the fuse box). Hacked it up good till I could lined up the IC so it was nice and straight, facing forward, making sure that the inlet and outlet were accessable. Then I marked the spot for this bracket and used a self-taping sheet metal screw to hold it to the frame.


Top bracket: Then I fashoned another pice of 90 bracket material to hold the top-most IC bracket. First I cut the bracket to size, bent it into shape, test fitting it along the way. Then I marked the location where I wanted it. Again I just used a self-taping sheet metal screw to hold it to the body.


Front view: I removed the fog light(?) cover(opened up the hole on the left) so I could get as much airflow ducted as possible. That left hole has the radiator right behind it, kind of blocking straight flow. So what I did was I ran the duct really low, into the bumper, so that it would have duct area to get deflected downward(as opposed to outward). All of this front ductwork is made from aluminum flashing material and pop-riveted into place onto the bumper and frame.


Bottom duct view: You can see how low I went with the ducting in these pictures. You can also see the funnel I made to mount to the IC. It's 3 inches out, and mounts directly to the intercooler. I put a screen on the front just in case a big rock comes hurling through one of the holes. The frame for the funnel was made from a 4 right angle brackets and a couple of small sheets of steel - all pop riveted to the 3 inch flashing. It makes a somewhat rigid box that fits right in front of the IC, is bracketed to the IC, and can be removed with the IC. Like I said, the front ductwork is all pop-riveted to the bumper/frame, so the funnel just slides(kind of) over the front ductwork.



Discharge: I drilled a bunch of holes in the wheelwell cover so the air could discharge. And that's my boy, who held the light.

haha nice man, wow, im amazed by that air tunnle. Looks like it took alot of work to make. can't wait to install the turbo, I really hope to get my car back together so we can feel 15 psi! woohoo! :)

Where are you getting your pipes? Could you post up the types (90 degree, 45 degree etc.) and length of the pipes? Where exactly did you bolt in the SMIC? I looked under my car and it looks like im going to have to drill a lot of holes in the metal :)Thanks.

Oh man, your car looks great with that new front! I can't wait either. Yeah, it did take a while to do. I took one day to fit and bolt the IC in and think about how I wanted to do the ducting, then it took another long day to actually build all the ductwork stuff.

Where to bolt it in? In the driver's side bumper. Look at the pictures labled "Bottom Bracket" and "Top Bracket". The "bottom bracket" picture is a view from the bottom/front of the intercooler - that bracket is bolted to the frame. The "top bracket" picture is looking down at the top of the intercooler, from above the engine bay - notice the fuse box in the top of the picture. Those are the only 2 bolts holding the IC in there.

As far as the piping is concerned - here's the list. I just copied it from my Excel spreadsheet, so the columning is a bit whacky(all bunched together). FYI - The column titles are: Description, Name,url, Part Number, Price, Quantity, Total. Some columns don't contain data - like for when there is no part number, or for the recurring items within in the layout list. Also remember that I'm going to be welding the bends together to get it to fit right, so if I say something like "some of this and some of that" it doesn't nessicarily mean that it's just one piece of pipe - it could involve welding multiple sections to get the pipes to fit right.

Looks good. I too will soon be building a duct to feed my SMIC (if Dino hadn't buy that used FMIC). I got ahold of a used GST scoop and will add aluminum sheets to the factory scoop. I'll see how that goes.

Making the ducting really inst that hard. Go to home depot and get some aluminum roofing flashing, it comes in a good size roll for like 5 or 10 bucks. I cut it out, and used self tapping metal screws to hold it down. Mine isnt as pretty as Metaljim's, but it does the job, which is what is important. Just duct it so it helps direct airflow into the IC. Use gloves when you work with that stuff though, its sharp as hell hehe.. By using the air ducts, you greatly increase the efficiency of the IC, esp in warmer weather.

Lemme see if I can dig up some pics of my 1g set-up and get them hosted. I have two pipes, a single elbow,left over 1g hosing, and a can of blue engine paint(also left-over). The whole deal cost less than $50 and the fab time was less than 3 hrs from start to finish. I think anybody can handle the job.

Does the Hahn Racecraft NT stage 2 pipe set comes anywhere close to working with a 1G side mount? I just bought a 1G side mount and am in the process of planning the piping for it. I don't actually have it yet, so I can't picture how it's going to mount yet, but if Hahn Racecrafts piping comes reasonably close to the inlet and outlet of a 1G IC, perhaps I will buy their 3pc set. Anyone know?

I'm not gonna get ahead of myself here. I've never touched a welder before. My parents can weld so I should have a little help to figure it out, though they haven't touched a welder since the 60's. I'm thinking about taking a class to take in some more modern tricks of the trade.

There are a couple of things that I want to do with it right away - IC piping and a full 3" exhaust. I might do the fuel rail fittings, not sure about that one yet cause the metal is kind of wierd, and I might put some bigger pipes on the SMIC but I think I'd like to get some practice on aluminum first.

AHHH, too many things that I wanna do with it. Right now I just want to be able to bulid BOTH the mandrel IC piping for $200 AND a full exhaust(turbine gasket to chrome tip) for around $300. That was the big draw for me to getting one now. HRC wans $450 to get you from the turbine outlet to the cat ONLY. Some outfits want just as much for a cat-back. Basically, cutting the cost of my exhaust by more than half pushed the part of me that always wanted a welder to actually get one. We'll see how it turns out.

As far as the HRC IC piping is concerned - their SMIC has a similar top pipe but the bottom one is a little different. I'm pretty sure the bottom pipe on the HRC SMIC comes straight out of the side and then does a 45 degree bend upward. On the 1g, that bottom pipe comes out of the back of the IC and makes a 90 degree bend toward the engine bay. You could probably get the pipes together, but you may need an extra copuler and maybe some pipe. Also you may have to cant the bottom of the 1g so the piping fits right. So you might be able to do it, but you might end up with an SMIC thats facing the sky, not the finish line. I really don't know.

Aluminum is a totally different welder. I am pretty sure on that. I asked someone to weld something for me and he couldn't. But I can't wait to check that out man! haha. Jim, maybe a custom fuel rail? hehe.... ahh I can't wait. You would seriously have the biggest baddest fuel system.
