so why do you all buy an extra engine block? is it because you won't have any down time?

i am going with a built bottom end with low comp pistons and rods with my current engine but how much downtime is involved anyway (ONCE i have all the parts of course)? I am not doing the engine work myselg (a skilled mechanic will).

Exactly. Really, the only part of the work that requires the downtime is the machine work. Sometimes, they can do it in a week, but don't be suprised is a slower shop required a month or so.

It just depends. Plus, for the relative low cost of a used block (~$100), it's almost worth it to have an extra block lying around.

Not trying to hi-jack the thread, but where can I purchase and extra block for around $100? Junkyards around here want $500-600 for them.

The junkyard wants $500-600 for just the block, or the whole engine?? I think that price you were quoted was for the complete engine.

I personally rebuild my engine instead of buying an extra block. It took me about 8 hours to pull the engine, it took 3 weeks for the engine shop to do all the work, and it took me about 3 days to clean up the engine bay, re-wire loom everything, and drop the engine back in.

That is for the complete engine, they won't sell me just the block. It's either all or nothing, I guess that's not so bad, I could rebuild the head while I'm at it ;)

at my junk yard i could get a whole engine block heads all for $50

hmm maybe I shoulda bought that one neon block i saw at the junkyard since that was all that was left so all 420A blocks are the same? SOHC or DOHC?

well my car has been down for a month and I think the most time consuming part is taking that damn block apart, don't forget you may run into something unexpected also like worn out crank or cylinder walls etc... Also cleaning all that old gasket crude off of the block ain't easy either. Helps to have a spare head too to build up and port and polish so you can just take the old stuff out and the new stuff in. But you'll have a lotta left over parts that way x( haha you might as well put two engines in the car and make it twin engine AWD :thumbsup

Well If i'm not mistaken Hades is doing all of the work himself. If you are having it assembled by a shop it won't take as long. If you are really worried about time then buy an extra block. I got one from a junkyard with pistons crank and all for $75.

buy a spare engine, so when u blow it up, youll have a running engine to fall back on ;)

What kind of junkyards are you guys finding your blocks in. My junkyard doesn't even have a 2nd gen eclipse in the whole thing!! - and it's a huge junkyard. The other junkyard near my house has 1 eclipse but he won't sell the block - he says it's not worth his labor to pull it out and he won't let me go in there.

Ask about a neon block. I guarentee you he has 75,000 of them in there. Just get one off a DOHC and your good. None of the junkyards around here have our cars either x(

Hey I'm new but I've been searching for days for an answer to my question. I have a 1996 eclipse 2.0 dohc, auto., that I got not running. I traded a paint job for the car. Its black with grey int. not sure if its a base or rs all emblems were removed when it got painted 2yrs ago. has new z rated tires on factory 16" seven spoke aluminum rims. I'm puting the car together for a 15yr old girl. The motor ran hot and lost all compression, timing belt good, has about 50 psi across the board. The motor has 172000 on it and I just don't feel like rebuilding it. I pulled the head and the valves looked fine but sent it to head shop anyway. I'm thinking rings are shot. I can get a 1996 2.0 sohc stratus block with 131000 miles, it ran hot and the shop I work at pulled head customer decided not to fix and gave us the title for the car. it has been sitting with out a head on it for about 3yrs. The cyl. look great and the crank turns freely can get block for $50. My main question is can i put my dohc head on the sohc block with out replacing pistons? I'm tring to stay as close to stock as possible with the motor and get by with a block, reworked head gasket set, water pump and timing set if possible. She just wants a dependable look pretty car not a racer. any help would be nice. Please and thank you. :)

Short answer is, no that block won't work. You need a DOHC neon or Eclipse block. Or you're gonna be doing a lot of extra work and blowing $

Sorry I brouht up old topic. Do you know what the title was to the old post? My next question is the housing is busted and the exhaust man. is craked would it be easier to get a used set up or just go with a header and cold air intake? I do appreciate the help and know I started off on the wrong foot, but my specialty is old school muscle I can build a V8 of any kind and know what I want/need/can expect from them. These 4 cyl. are new territory for me and I'm still learning. Thanks for the help :)

Not that I'm talking shit, because you were obviously using the search, which is what we'd like people to do, but if you and some buddies were talking about minimizing downtime on a Ford 302 rebuild and some guy walked in off the street asking if he could use the 4-cylinder out of a Probe in his 4-cylinder Mustang, wouldn't you have something to say about it? :P

No worries though. Automotive theory is theory. What works on the V8s works on the 4-bangers too. Displacement is good. Boost is good. Add both and you're in business. If you've been building engines long enough, just go with your gut.

I suspect you might be able to use that other block if it's a 2.0L, but I think most of the 4-cylinder Stratus/Cirrus/Breeze were 2.4L. This install has been done, but it's not a bolt-up affair. You have to mix and match parts from a handful of different Chrysler products. The safe bet would be to just fix the one in the car now. You KNOW it's the right engine that way.

I'd just pull the pistons out of the existing engine and inspect the cylinders. If the pistons are OEM (as opposed to forged, twenty over, etc.), order up a set of new rings from your favorite vendor (I recommend PartsDinosaur.com because his prices are good and his service is superlative), give the cylinders a nice hone, and put things back together with new rings and rod bearings. Consider replacing the water and oil pumps while you've got things apart to make sure the car lasts the little heartbreaker until at least senior year.

And you should definitely replace the turbo system stuff (don't forget to return the fuel system to stock) with naturally aspirated gear to make sure the car doesn't just come right back with another roasted chestnut waiting for you under the hood. You can find a decent header and intake on Ebay, which is where I would suggest selling the turbo bits.
