46037, could i still drive my car withour a wastegate?
Posted by DarKReaLity, Apr-02-03 05:50 AM
this is probably a stupid question, but the reason i ask is because i finally found out my deltagate is messed and needs to be sent for repair, it's not holding boost real well. so i wanted to know if it's still possible for my car to still be drivable without boosting while i send this to be repaired.

NO............ the purpose of a wastegate is to get rid of excess boost...... if it bad you will have boost spikes....... this will def. blow up the motor.... lets say you have a 8lb spring in there... any boost over the 8lbs will be exausted out... if your wastegate doesn't do that then you will build more boost beyond that setting.... get the point... if it's bad replace it before you drive it...

I think he's asking if he can take it off and still drive. Other than underhood temps skyrocketing, I wouldn't see why not. You will essentially not have an exhaust b/c most of your exhaust will dump out that hole where the wastegate was. It will be really loud and really hot, but it should run. If you could avoid it, that would be best, but it's up to you.

yeah i know my boost spikes, that's why it's messed up. i have a blockoff plate to where the wastegate goes. that's why i'm asking, would it be alright to just drive normal without running it hard?

It'sa not a good idea, but it is possible. Stay the hell out of the throttle, do your best to never get into boost, and you'll be okay.

But its still not a good idea.

I drove around for a week before I put my secondary injectors in and never saw boost once. Just be very aware of the situation and NEVER give it more than like 1/4 throttle and you should be ok.

I drove around for a month with my wastegate hooked up backwards, right after i installed my turbo. Sure, it'll boost to the sky, but if you're careful with your foot you won't have any problems.

Yes, its possible. No, its not a good idea.

Hell, when i installed Brynden's turbo kit, we didn't realize it came with no wastegate. We just made a blockoff for it and sent him on his way with the smae instructions - stay outta the throttle until you can buy a wstegate of get the one Wyatt owes you.. he did fine for a week or two.

its not hard to drive a turbo car and keep it out of boost.

thanks for the help fellas. well i'll give it shot, i really need to fix it so i can boost again. just on a heads up,i talked to the turbnetics tech about my problem, and he mentioned that the older deltagate wastegates were manufactured incorrectly for the same reasons, and most of them need to be sent back to either be repaired or changed for the newer model. he said if mine is not able to be repaired that they'll change it for the newer models for $50. so let's see what's up.

Why would you have to give $50 for the new one if it was their error in making the thing in the first place? I wouldn't give them a damn dime. Hey I made this model wrong the first time, but for $50 I'll give you the one I made right....WTF???? Did they say how you know if yours is the wrong one?

you could always get an internally gated turbocharger and not have to worry about it... hehe... i shouldn't go starting holy wars.

if my wastegate was damaged so that it was always closed, i probably wouldn't drive my car until i got it fixed. too risky. i don't know if i'd have the discipline or not to not go into boost. sure, if you were real careful you could boost a little, but it would be pretty dangerious.
