4584, Question about 440's and AFC.. Posted by DarkOne, May-04-01 05:14 AM
Would it be wise and safe to go ahead and install my 440's and SAFC, keep my 12:1 FPR, and lean it all out 50% across the board? By my quick guesswork, that would put me at the equivalent of stock injector flow, with the same pressure variations as i have now. I understand that it might run rich, but i still haven't got the money for the dyno time to get this sucker tuned with the 3:1 FPR, 440's and SAFC. Any input?

Well according to Wyatts dyno page he ran that set up (440cc injectors, AFC 12:1 FMU) but had it leaned only 30%. I'd talk to him.

I would say go for it! If anything you will be able to tell from your EGT readings. you can make corrections from there. You shouldn't be -50% all across the board I don't think though maybe 40% on high throttle? Later!

I wonder how much boost stock internals can take with ample fuel ?? :-)

What fuel pressure are you guys running to make those 440's idle like stock ?
Also has anyone considered using the HKS AFR? it has a special feature called "Idle correction" for larger injectors and cams, etc..(wondering if that would work better w/ stock fuel pressure @ idle)..

I've found that my car will run closed loop just fine on most any reasonable fuel pressure and AFC setting with the 440's. Right now, I'm running 43 psi from idle vacuum to full boost. I just disconnected the vacuum line so the pressure would stay constant. I'm making all of my fuel adjustments with my boost sensitive S-AFC. So far it works fine. I will finish tuning this week and make a VFAQ for it. I know some people are interested in how to do it.

Yes I'm dying to know (since I have almost the same setup as you)!
BTW, Corbin, what was the lowest idle fuel pressure you used?

29 was as low as I tried. I kept getting rattling noises that I think were "pinging". I should have been giving it plenty of fuel but I guess not. I bumped up the fuel pressure to make sure that the injectors would spray properly. It seems to be running alright now. It barely rattles (pings?) at my recent settings. EGT's are a little too low. My oxygen sensor is reading low (cycling from 0-0.7V). When I coast, it goes -0.15! I've verified it with 2 multimeters...its the sensor. Maybe my oxygen sensor is dying? I'll figure it out soon.

they say that you get a little rattle from forged pistons, with bigger cylinder walls, when at cold start up....Who is they, was an article I read in SS.

I believe Corbin has a stock bottem end. I've heard the same thing, and I believe that Stan has said that his pistons are noise on start up.

Yeah stock bottom end. First I'll get my fuel system perfect, then give level 10 a call for tranny upgrades, then engine internals. The last 2 won't happen this year...unless something blow$

I heard from a local shop ownner that the 440's are too big if you plan on running 10 lbs of boost. The S-AFC is a good Tuning tool but turning those injectors into 50% duty is not something the S-AFC could do. What do you guys think. He does a lot of business with Hahn. Hahn says that bigger injectors are not needed when running 10 lbs of boost. Anyhting after that requires bigger injectors and upgraded bottom end. Star and Hahn also have different fuel system components. I think i might just try to get the same fuel set up as hahn.

440's are perfect for 9-10 pounds of boost...IF your max fuel pressure is around 43 psi. We need about 375 cc/min of fuel at 9 psi boost. Thats just a 440 cc/min injector run at 85% duty cycle. I'm using the AFC to cut that duty cycle down.
