45421, Building Custom Turbo Kit... Help?
Posted by Eclipse2NR, Mar-25-03 06:45 AM
Hey guys,

I want to build a custom turbo kit, as my dad works for a local Mitsubishi dealership, I can get substantial discounts on OEM parts. Most notably, the turbo from the new US EVO, which is a 16G. This sounds like a good turbo to use anyway, and I can get it brand new for a low price. I saw other posts suggesting the exhuast manifold from Gottude.Com. It's like 325 bucks or so.

So what other stuff will I need? Obviously quite a bit. Some sort of fuel enrichment? New ECU/piggyback unit, aux. fuel pump and FPR, boost gauge, downpipe, intake... and a lot of hoses like ones to hook up an oil supply to the turbo and gauges. But I really don't know how to integrate all of this. I found the HRC install manual online, and that helped me some. I am on a budget, but I can probably manage to get 1200 (US) bucks or so. Could someone reply with some good info about this idea of mine? Is it feasible to make this work? Let me know what you think!

Thanks,
Mark

I searched for about 1 minute and found this stuff....read read read. It wastes space for people to start a new thread about this every other week.

Custom turbo kits are definately doable. You should be able to get almost every part you need for 1200$. BTW, I think youd still get really overpriced parts from the dealer. Honestly the best place to look is www.dsmtrader.com you can find so much stuff on there for cheap.

OK...

I think I've found the turbo I want. Hahn Racecraft sells it's Super 16G Turbos for $599 bucks. Sounds good to me. My only question is, it comes with a 15 or 10 psi internal wastegate. I don't want to run that high of boost yet. How can I circumvent the internal wastagte for a LOWER level of boost. Possible even?

Just get the wastegate for the stage 1 kit. It's a 5 lb spring.

my stainless steel manifolds are 325$ my mild steel manifolds are 250$

i would say get a used or rebuilt turbo if u need to save cash, if not get a new one from whereever u like just make sure u know what flanges u have and what wastegate u have..

i sell my t3's that are identical to a 16g compressor flow, for 550$
(brand new)

i can provide anything else that u need from the kit also..

just research your prodject as much as u can wouldn't be a bad idea to buy the book maximum boost by corky bell and make sure u understand about about turbo chargers...

You can easily adjust the wastegate actuator arm (lengthen it so it opens earlier) to lower the amount of boost. You can get a shop to do it or experiment yourself by adding washers to the bolt that controls the actuator arm.

In my opinion, you dont even need a 16G. Its a large turbo, and unless youre planning to run large boost you dont really need it. You can get a used 14b in good shape which is good for ~300hp (some turbo guys in my local clubs are running 13's with a 14b) or a t25 from a junkyard for 150-200$. Check DSM trader people sell turbos on there all the time for a good price.

I'm convinced that T3 turbos are the best turbos to use for a custom setup on the 420A. The fit is perect and it's a very nice sized turbo available in multiple sizes. Flanges, manifolds, gaskets, and upgrades are readily available. When you max out the T3, you can convert it to a T3/T4. The Mitsu 16G is a good turbo as well, I just think the T3 is more versatile.

Thats why I got the T3. Nice size turbo, and everything is already facing the right way.

um, little off subject. I'm putting together a custom kit.

Anyone know what I'd be making with the following mods?
-Rebuilt auto trans
-phanotom grip lsd conversion
-3000 stall torque converter
-Howell bottom end (8.6 comp ratio)
-rest of motor stock (stock head, pulley, cam gears etc.)
-Motofools manifold
-16g turbo
-8-injector set-up
-haven't decided on timing control yet (retard during boost for newbies)
-custom FMIC
-full 2.5in catback

Hoping for 20psi track and 15psi daily }(

This is just the major parts. Anyone? I'm not really into drag racing (as u may or may not tell) but I was just wondering what I would do in the 1320 with this set-up.

The IHI turbos off the turbo t-birds are great for our cars. They are about the size of a medium t-3. Everything is situated in the right position. The only thing you have to rotate is the compressor housing and that's easy. Making the downpipe is also alot easier, because you get to use the O2 housing from the turbo; this is the only turbo I've seen that lets you do that. Mine came out of an 88. I don't know how many miles it had on it, but when I took it apart it appeared in pretty good condition.
