Depends on what kind of prices you can get locally on engine work. If you know what you need done then you are cheaper having the work done yourself. If you don't know what to do, have no engine shop around or are just lazy, then buy the prebuilt shortblock and the built head and be done with it.

Building your own will always be cheaper, but if you havent built one before, I would spend the extra money on a pre-built one, or find someone to help walk you through it. I made a post in the performance/engine section a few days ago about a place called VT competition engine development. If you want a prebuilt shortblock, I highly suggest that you read that thread and give them a call. Here's the tread I'm talking about. http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=47305

i got the howell 2.0 shortblock, so far it's held up quite nicely. i didn't want to deal with local machine shops, and i've never rebuild an engine myself so i wanted something easier.

I also bought the howell block, and I would highly recommend buying one from VT Competition Engine Development for a long list of reasons. When I bought my howell block, VT was still building their new shop, so I wasn't able to use them. I truely regret my howell block purchase... to the extent that I am building another engine now to replace it.
