44793, why a need for a turbo timer on a 2gnt Posted by dvatt2424, Mar-15-03 02:06 AM
last night i went to test drive a wrx and the dealer told me that there is no need to let the car cool down after driving it. so why do we have to for ours if we turbo it? Also to keep your warranty you have to change the oil every 7,000 miles. Seems a bit high i have always read 3,000 and for turbo even lower like 2,000 because of the high temps the turbo causes and the breakdown in oil.

You turbo time a car to prevent the oil from "coking" inside the turbo. It can harden in there and break stuff. Not a real technical description, but I'm tired. I don't know what that salesman was talking about. 7,000 miles for an oil change? Sounds wierd to me.

And you're going to listen to a salesman??????? :wary .... No, I'm not making fun... :-)
But seriously... they are so dirty that he's probably trying to get you to f*** your car up and then come and buy a new car from him

If you listen to someone from the dealership they will almost always tell you there is no need for a turbo timer so they can ass rape oyu sooner when the turbo goes bad. Listen to them if you want but it'll be your wallet hurting when it comes time to replace the turbo.....

Hes trying to sell you a car. Would be more or less likely to buy a car if you knew you would have to buy more shit for it later?

HRC says the same thing, that you don't need a turbo timer. They told me at least 3 times that our turbo was "modern" and therefore was not prone to oil coking. :rolleyes :wary

Oil coking was a big problem when turbos first started appearing on the market. There were many failures and that led manufacturers to make some design changes. The aftermarket responded with turbo timers.
Letting your turbo cool down a little before shutting it off is certainly a good idea. I use synthetic oil and generally only let the car cool down (for 3-5 minutes) if I've boosted recently. I just don't see the point in letting the car idle if I've been cruising lightly for the past few minutes anyway. Just don't boost hard and shut the engine right off...that can't be good.

I'm not even boosted, and I always idle my car for a min or so if I just ran hard on my engine. Just seems like a good idea, better safe then sorry.
And yea, you're suppose to be able to go 7-10k on the same oil. Keep in mind that those are numbers for average driving. I'd change more often... again.. better safe then sorry. :thumbsup

Oils and turbos have probably improved a great deal from whence the concept of coked turbos began. However, with that said, if you've been boosting around pretty hard, at the higher rpm's, I'd say to err on the side of caution and allow that turbo to cool down.
In my Laser, there's a very clear warning about cooling your turbo down after high rpm jaunts. It's right on the underside of the visor. I'd be curious to see if there's such a warning on a WRX somewhere. I'd bet there is.

In high school I had an 81 Saab 900 Turbo and it was one of the first things covered in the owners manual. Said to always let the car idle and cool down for a minute or 2 after "spirited" driving. Back in the day everyone thought I was a retard for having to sit in my car and let it cool off for a bit whenever we went anywhere....LOL

What about cooling the turbo itself when its on? Factory turbo cars always have a water line running to and from the turbo. I know you dont "need" it, but isnt it better to have it?

i believe it is better to water cool also, so i'll be doing that. a couple people here have their turbos water cooled.

that's why you have an oil line going to the turbo... water line to teh turbo? i don't think so :wary

Most factory turbo are water cooled... coulda sworn even 90-99 DSMs were too. At least i would think so, since Starions had water cooled turbos since the early 80's
(sorry if i misread your post, read like you were saying turbos arent water-cooled, my bad if i misunderstood)

maybe since i have a upgraded turbo on my x... but i could have sworn that it's only oil cooled... that is the point of the TT to keep the oil running through the turbo so it cools the turbo down.... cause as stated above they will bake any oil that is inside it if you don't idle the car for a min or 2 after spooling hard..... Ever seen a cherry red turbo before... it's not a pretty site after you take it apart..... but now i gotta take a look at the turbo and trace out the lines cause this is now bothering me if it's water cooled...

Yea, i realize that, been around turbos and turbo chryslers for a while. Known people that have replaced many turbos on older chryslers from cooking oil.
Coulda sworn 90+ DSMs were water cooled tho, i cant think of another recent factory turbo car that doesnt have water and oil cooled turbos...

They are watercooled as well.
In fact, with HRC Super series turbos, there is a blocked off coolant ports that people implement with very little plumbing. I'd like to do the same sometime.

Watercooling is probably a good idea. I know the stock 14b that came with the 1Gs is meant to be watercooled. It has the opening for it, and even in the chiltons manual you can see diagrams to where the water lines are supposed to go.
Question is, where would you hook up the water line? Id figure you can tap the hose that runs from the radiator to the thermostat and then return the water to the pipe that runs from the engine to the radiator. It wouldnt be that hard of a job, and I think it would be very beneficial to the turbo.

Actually, you would probably want to tap into the line that runs just above the exhaust manifold. I have also often thought about running water lines to the s16g, but I think I'll wind up doing that when I have it rebuilt... or maybe even... upgraded *hint* ;)

After the thermostat? Wouldnt that potentially decrease the flow of coolant? What would be the difference?

45112, RE: why a need for a turbo timer on a 2gnt Posted by etx, Mar-20-03 09:31 AM
Yeah i would be really interested in this. Does anyone know if the s16g from HRC has these water cooling ports?

Yes the HRC 16G has brass NPT plugs in the water cooling ports. All you do is remove the plugs with an allen wrench and screw in NPT barbs with some high temp RTV. Put a tee in the coolant line that runs over the exhaust manifold. Run a heater hose from that tee to the closest barb on the turbo. Put a tee in the coolant line down by the tranny. Run a heater hose from that tee to the other barb on the turbo. You can get all the tees from Home Depot. They actually sell a tee that has very large barbs on either end and a single small barb on the side. I think its for sprinkler systems or something.
