4478, Hello 18 PSI !!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOO! Posted by MWC, May-01-01 07:21 AM
Well break in time is officialy over and the "ol" Greddy is mounted and custom 2 1/5 piping ran.:) I unplugged the waste gate again(this time with a built bottom end) :) and all I can say is OH MY GOD! I shreded the tires and smoked a couple of ricers that were in my site. One was a riced Integra, and the other was a riced Civic Vtec. I have been running mayjor rich the past 2 weeks and wouldnt you know, even on 18 psi I still am in the comfort zone of rich. :) I am going Hunting this weekend, the last time I went to the street races there were some people hittin ThunderRIP up asking if his freind(me) wanted to race. Well I was only running 5 PSI and stage 1 for the break in time of 500 miles so I very kindly declined to blow my motor again. No the story is a little differant and hope to get the same offers. :) for $$$ of coarse. SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!!MWC P.S you can not imagine the differance between 5 psi and 10psi, or even better the differance between 10 psi and 18 psi. It is freaky!!!!!!!!!

You have the HRC kit right? I have the Star Kit and I can only run 15psi if I'm lucky before I get hot EGT's....must be my big turbo...I was running the RC 440cc injectors too...that what you have? Let me know.....I'm just wondering why I'm only getting 15psi of boost from my 440's when Chris and You and can get over that......I think it's the size of the Turbo but help me out here.

May have something to do with the Star intercooler. I know the HRC unit is much more efficient, both the side unit and the front mount. It may get to a point where the intercooler becomes inefficient, and you may be compressing dangerously hot air into your intake. I suppose that could lead to high EGT's and possible detonation. Dunno. Just a guess. There are hundreds of other possiblities.

Ya there's a difference!!! I ran 4 and 1/2 psi up to San Mateo last weekend, and before I left to come back, my friend convinced me to bring it up to 8. Well, I only brought it up between 6 and 7psi and DAMN!!! There was a big difference!!! I can't wait till I can boost 18psi with my bottom end:-)
Needless to say, I turned it down when I got back cause 4 and 1/2psi makes me drive to fast as it is :-)

been there, done that.. but you know what? Break in period is 3000 miles. Just like in a new car. Good luck!

So what you are saying is that when a guy spends $65000.00 on his new Porsche he has to drive around for 2 months not hitting over 4000 rpm. I think not. :) If that was the case my motor would have blown by now. Call any machine shop that know what they are talking about and the will say 500-1,000 the most to break in a motor. But I am not even going to debate this one. My car tears S@!#@ up and pulls so freaking hard, that if there was more breakin needed, its too late now. SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!MWC

Okay.. if you say so. It's really your decision whether or not you want to take advice from someone who was boostin the 420A since turbo's existed for it and has had to rebuild a total of three times. I too only waited only 300 miles the second time I rebuilt which is when I upgraded to the JE's and Crower rods.. and I was consistently boosting 15psi while still running rich. I ended up with a BAD case of blow by after only a few months. It's because I couldn't wait.. I had to stomp on the gas pedal. But the place that's rebuilding my engine now told me that It's obvious that I didn't break it in because of the conition of the new bearings and rings. But anyway, I'm just giving you a fair warning. It's up to you.. and I'm sure everyone here would agree that it's NOT too late to continue breaking it in.

I waited 5,000 miles before I turned it up to 15psi. Murix waited 3,000 miles

usu. new car motors are broken in before they are sold in cars. The odometer reading is from the time the car rolls off of the loading truck to the dealer.
Bring it on...........

4487, OK OK OK Posted by MWC, May-03-01 12:43 AM
So I have to drive around for another 2 months with a F$#@#% greddy getting tried by all hondas, before I can boost. WTF that realy sucks if that is the case. So far I have been told between here on the board and machine shops break in time is anywhere between 500-5,000. That is a big variation. Let me guess every motor is differant! Is there a way to tell when these motors get broken in? SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!MWC

Well I dont know who told you what but all the ENGINE shops I spoke to prior to having my engine rebuild was 1000-1500 miles. First run it gently for 500miles and change the oil. Run it gently for another 500miles and change the oil again. Then either run it gently for and additional 500miles or be done with it. If your rings haven't sealed before 3000 miles they probably never will seal correctly.

LAST EDITED ON 03-May-01 AT 11:43 PM (PST)Whoa so you have to drive it 3k miles like at 3k rpm to break in the turbo? Oh man... I'd be itchin to mash that pedal soooo bad.
By the way what street races would this be? I would like to see a monster turbo powered 2GNT in action.

Well I have called several respective machine shops as well as posted on other sites in regards to breaking in the motor, and the overall consenses are. 500 miles is ok, but 1,000 is better. But now way anything over 1,500 is nessesary. The places I called are. 1. The dealer . 2. Clark Engines 3. The shop that will be tuning my motor 4. (posted) on the DSM.ORG board So I feel that the 900 miles I have now is fine for at least 10 Psi and after 1,500 I will go back up to 18. :)
As for what street races? They are held at a place in south Floriday on Saturday nights, called state rd 27. We meet at Publix super markets at the corner of Pines and Flamingo in Pembroke pines Florida. SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!!MWC

You mean the turbo right? I'm sure my engine is well broken in, but do you need to keep your foot off the pedal when you get a new turbo kit installed?

No. MWC recently had his motor rebuilt, thats why he was breaking it in. Unless you have a brand new car with zero miles and install the turbo immediately, there is no need for a break in period.

Raizin, this is MArio whats up man..hey just wanted to let you know that I'm sorry to hear about your 3 blowing I knew about 2, but let me explain you something...brak in perios is subject to the way your motor is build and who does it...For instance the person that does our race motors gave us a synthetic paste that you put in the cylinder walls before the pistons to create a primary seal, then when you cranck up the car you do a RPM cycle that is similar to the one use on Atlantis, F1 cars to rapid seal the motor, you can basiclly make the motor seal after a few minutes, after this process is done you change oil again and then once again ever 500 miles till 1500 when you will put you first synthetic oil change...motors become very strong this way and even though takes a while to get full compression at 500 miles we have experienced stock numbers in all pistons...also if you do a stop and go traffic break in for 1000 miles is worth more than 3000 of highway...thats why is very very hard to throw a number...mostmechanics will say 3000miles to be 100% safe so do dealers, I have experienced 1000miles break ins in over 15 cars that all run strong daily.
I'm not saying it couldn't blow...JUst letting you know that 3000miles is a lil high when you do the cycles and respective oil changes...Good luck with your car.
Ray: Good luck at the races let me know How it goes
Mario Deniz
P.S:Obvioulsy more miles you break in the safer.

MARIO!!!!!!!
Damn, you never cease to amaze me bro. I still can't believe how much you have improved with your english since we've started talking on the old message board. I'm not trying to make fun.. but back then I could honestly never understand you. Glad to hear you're still around. Yea.. I guess 3000 is steap. But due to my last mishap.. I'm gonna let my patience pay off. I've spent so much damn money on this car and I can't afford to blow it again because I'm gonna work on the "show" aspect. I was thinking of adding a little laughing gas first.. but I haven't been discouraged with the capability of my engine work with losing races.
MWC .. how much did your rebuild set you back? I just got a fax from the sponsoring shop that is building mine and they're only charging me 1784.40 with flow bench pressure testing and all machine work. Plus they sent my bottom end to cryoscience to have it frozen. And they didnt' charge me tax. Oh.. hey I still need that wiring diagram of the '95 ECU if you have it.

LAST EDITED ON 03-Jun-01 AT 08:49 AM (PST)i was just curious, what does a full rebuild entail and how much $$ is it usually?
|
4496, RE: HMMMMMM I think not! Posted by PuRe RaGe, Jun-03-01 06:44 AM
That can vary anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000. It all depends on who does the work and what parts you decide to go with.
