Our new intercooler system is ready for 420A applications. Take a look:


Of course, the photos you see here are for the 4G63 application. As soon as I have photos of the 420A application, we will add them to the website. The 420A version is similar, but the piping comes in from the driver's side instead. In either case, the core completely fills the fascia opening from top to bottom, with no tank visible at the bottom. Makes for a very clean appearance!

Looks good! I have a couple questions. How does it flow with the inlets and outlets being on the same side, of a side to side flowing IC. I'm going to guess and say that the first end tank is split in two? If this is the case then isn't that a less efficient way when compared to having the inlet and outlet being on opposite sides of the IC. Also wouldn't it be better to have the inlet and outlet being the same size and as big as possible just in case the IC pipes are upgraded at a later date (more for the 4g63 application). Those are just my dumb questions and since your the expert and I'm just the guy asking the questions, I'm sure you have a good reason for all of the design choices. But questions aside that is one nice looking FMIC and I really like the mounting tabs.

I am very interested in your perceptions here, as I like to learn about what people see and think when presented with new info. Let me ask you:
Did you have a look at the webpage before you posted? If no, that's quite cool, I am not admonishing you: have a look now, and let me know what you think of the info there. If yes, I would like to know if the webpage illustrated the concept properly. Please share your perceptions with me.

I did look at the web page, but I didn't FULLY read the info. I looked at the diagram and thought that the point of it was only the air flow to the rad and not the plumbing of the pipe on the bottom of the IC. God I hate asking questions with the answer right there in front of me :)
It isn't really clear with just the picture of the FMIC but when one READS all of the info it's clear. Now the the pipe sizes, they look as if one is smaller (maybe only 2")any reason for that.

Thanks for the input! I believe I will add another diagram illustrating airflow through the intercooler. It is a unique design, and I want the function to be easily understood by all. Do you think such a diagram would help?

when i read sean's question i thought he was referring to the fact that your intercooler's core charge area is small, but very long.
a quote from corky bell's maximum boost:
"This is the proper way to make a bigger intercooler: Always increase the core area by adding a greater number of internal passageways. Do not just make the same number of passages longer." -- pp. 60
that would lead one to believe that your intercooler is a less efficient design but your tests obviously prove otherwise. a 0.92 psi pressure loss at 572 cfm is pretty darn good in my opinion!
i would love to see the 420a version and i'm also interested in knowing if it'll fit the avenger/sebring. definately a nice piece of hardware. how much and when can i have it?

Will it fit the front of my Avenger with any clearance/fitment issues? I hear the room in front is a little bit diffrent from the Eclipse and just wondering if you have tried this on the Avenger/Sebring 420a?? With my new set up I would love to get a FMIC, even though the SMIC is still efficient, maybe more towards looks, thanks Bill..

Any idea on costs? I saw the prices for the SMIC, etc, but not for the new FMIC. My main concern with a Front mount that large is air getting to the radiator...it seems that this design is a lot better than others. Most people with HRC kits are only running 5-8psi, so it is kind of overkill for us. For those with built 420A engines, however, it seems to be a great choice.

Hoot: Corky is quite knowledgeable, and a personal friend of mine. I, too, have subscribed to his theories regarding intercooler design. However, I found that as I continued to design units closer to this standard, I achieved the desired minimal pressure drop, but the outlet temperatures began to rise. As I examined the situation, I found that the charge air was not spending enough time in the core, reducing the heat removal efficiency. Low pressure drop is good, but...this is an interCOOLER, after all! If we sacrifice too much cooling efficiency for pressure drop, the inherent functionality of the cooler will be overly compromised.
Thus the large horizontal core. The aspect to keep in mind here is that our internal cooling fin design has been selected to reduce pressure drop while affording maximim cooling efficiency, as our performance data show. We use a computer program to simulate core performance and experiment with different configurations. This data allows us to design cores that will have excellent cooling capacity while maintaining acceptable pressure drop.
Hoot, Shant, Jeff: We have yet to perform a trial installation on an Avenger. It should fit, but the installer will likely need to modify the piping and mounts. Pricing for this intercooler system should be about $999 to upgrade existing Stage II's, a bit more to convert a Stage I (a couple more pipes required).
Boostn: Yes, the site navigation is a bit odd right now, primarily because we have two sites: turbosystem.com for you guys, hrchahnracecraft.com for 4G63 guys. We are about to introduce a different format that combines them into one hahnracecraft.com site (you out there, Phrenzy?). This should make things easier.

i agree, besides i would just need the FMIC anyway.... no piping. all my piping has to be custom anyway.
bill you obviously did your homework, i wasn't trying to discredit your design in any way. the numbers speak for themselves. it makes sense that a large charge area and extremely short path would make a lousy intercooler like you said. so, what's the availability on these things?

Hoot: Actually, I love the chance to elaborate about this stuff, so keep those observations and questions coming. The aspects of intercooler design you brought up are something I have spent a lot of time with and therefore love to expound upon. As many will agree, I am rarely a man of few words!
Availability is good, about a week to fill an order. If you are doing a custom design, we can also offer anything from 2 1/8" to 3" hose connections on the inlet and outlet (standard is 2 1/4"). Just email me the details!

Well, I may be the frist to try to mount this inner cooler on the Sebring/Avenger's as I will be ordering my Stage2 W/FMIC kit this Monday 5/7/01 That is if I get off of work early enough the sales people are only there till 5:00 pm and I still need to get all of the account info before wiring to HRC Bank... I'll let you guy's know how it go's over on the ASOG board.}> Unless someone get's around to the install before me.

I wouldn't think you would have to mod the I/C piping at all unless you have abs. All the pipes onmy car went in the right places.......only problem is there is a big distribution block in the way :-/
