could anybody just give a real quick list of things to look out for when buying a used or rebuilt turbo? tia
oh, and how much of a pain in the ass is it to rebuild a blown turbo?
sorry if these have been answered before...but i'm looking at a couple turbos right now and need some quick answers. thanks!!

Id say one of the most important things to look for is shaft play.

Def check the shaft play, and also closely inspect the compressor and exaust turbines for any damage, bent fins, ect. If there is just a very slight amount of shaft play (usually will be on the compressor side), thats ok, but it will need rebuilding in the near future. If it has a lot of play, do not install it before rebuilding it. Check the movement of the wastegate, and actuator, if its an internally gated turbo, such as the S16G. Be sure it operates freely. Also, spin the turbo shaft, it should spin easily, and not hang up, or feel any drag on it. It should spin nice and smoothly.

if you mean excessive shaft play and no bent fins, then it's pretty easy. all you need to do is take off the compressor housing using a pair of snap ring pliers and disassemble the center section. rebuild kits include new bearings and stuff like that. they're pretty cheap (well, cheap as car parts go) and it's pretty easy to do. i think corbin has a writeup for rebuilding HRC's s16g.
the good thing, is that after you rebuild a turbo (or buy a new one) chances are it will last 100k+ miles if you take care of it. ALWAYS turbo time (i do a 1 minute and 30 seconds for poking around town and not boosting much, 3 mintues if i want some go, and 5 for road trips/drag racing) and make sure that you don't try to push 25 psi on a 14b or a t25 (doubt either of those would actually go that high, but i don't really know). turbochargers don't like overboosting, it puts a huge stress on them. oil coolers help too, i bet that would extend the life of a turbocharger too.
