4437, Knock Alert !
Posted by BoostnRS, Apr-29-01 07:15 PM
I know i have brought this subject up before, but I have
not been able to find any new information on making an LED
light for when your engine senses detonation.

I got the idea from the 4G63 guys but for them the knock sensor LED hooks up quite different especially since they have a (BCS) boost control solenoid which retards boost during a lean condition.

One way to do it on the 420a would be to figure out how many Ohms the knock sensor gives out when it detects knock. But I
dont think anyone wants to find out those numbers the hard way.

if anyone can shine some light on this!! any help would be greatly appriciated!!

thanks!

Perhaps some one can look it up in the OEM shop manual?

Knock sensors are one of the most sophisticated items on your car. They use a priciple of piezoelectronics, which is to say that they generate a voltage from the rubbing together of crystals. When a noise occurs whose frequency matches the resonance of the crystals, they generate this voltage. The crystals are tuned to resonate when the noise signature of detonation is present.

Reading this signal can be difficult. Many engine systems will also only acknowledge the knock sensor's output signal during certain periods based upon crankshaft position, thereby ignoring potentially incorrect readings induced by other engine noises.

Very trick stuff!

Thanks for the manual guys! (Fast connection here)..
Going back to the whole voltage thing. I was thinking another
possibility for this might be to tap into the ECU wire which is responsible for sending the signal to "retard" timing when knock is present. Only problem there would be that we dont know how the ignition map looks.

I'll keep you guys posted if i find anything out!
