4427, I'm one of you now!! (long)

LAST EDITED ON 29-Apr-01 AT 09:38 PM (PST)

Minus BOV for a day or two and running a little hotter than usual but didn't overheat tonight after 20min of driving (I've had simular experineces with nitrous and even normall aspirated but more volatile now. I'll take care of that when I get the head gasket on or sooner if I have to). drove about 20min tonight and the turbo sounds bad ass. Not much happening before 3500rpms but from there it goes nicely and sound bad ass (I know I said it already but it REALLY sounds bad ass). Haven't put the back seat back on yet but let me be the 1000 person to say "the Walbro pump is loud". A/F gauge pegged at .1V throughout boost. FMU went on easy. Fuel pump not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I wouldn't say cracking the fuel feed line way easy but that was nothing compared to the numerous stuck bolts I encountered day before (it took all of 5min to break that loose). Fuel pump fit the bracket better than people said it would too.
Dont ask me to compare it to nitrous yet cause I didn't drive it enough to say anymore than nitrous is stronger initially. After that I really cant tell yet. Partly because of the different sounds. Floored the T from a 3500rpm standstill and I didn't hear or feel much (in comparison) but tires being stredded. Do that with nitrous and it sounds like Kenny Bernstein doing a burnout.

Finally everyone says their first drive with their turbo was smile inducing fury. My first drive was several trips around the block not even in boost just hoping oil and fluids dont shoot out from where I worked at (although it happened in my driveway. Filter gasket stuck to the engine block and put new filter on. Idled for a few minutes then next thing I know 3 gallons of fresh mobil 1 all over my driveway. Big ass oil spill #2). It wasn't until several trips down the street and back to my driveway before I let it rip a few times (then back to the driveway again).

Up next: new gasket and .020 gasket plate, then mounting intercooler.
Is it me or does a turbo'd 420A sound a lot meaner than a turbo 4G62? (oops I meant 4G63)

Putting a 4G63 turbo witha 16G and exhasut right next to my car, I will completely agree with Stan. Our engine has a deeper sound too it. I always assumed it was my exhaust (Tanabe G-Medalion)which I absolutely love, but perhaps it is more than that.

Great job Stan!

I knew you could do it bro. The sound is quite awesome though. I STILL get a rise out of it everytime I hit the throttle. Hard to describe for those of you N/A. Saying "whoooosh" really doesn't do it justice. Making a weak attempt at a description, it's sort of like a jet at an airport but not nearly as loud. It's just the same type of sound, not the same volume. So imagine this, hitting your throttle at more than 50% and then your car pushing you back making a jet-like sound. :-) How can that NOT make you have a shit-ass grin.

I think our turbos sound louder b/c we don't have a big MAF and our turbos are so much higher and nearer to our intakes. I'd like to hear the power comparisons to nitrous though Stan. Either way, it's less payments to the nitrous man. Send pics!

Great job again!

Well fixed the overheating problem. My thermostat must have quit because today it did overheat. Well when I got home I took the thermostat out all together (the hose and housing were dry. usually fluid dumps out). Temp stays perfect now. It definately hits more than 5psi (just past the 6 mark). I have to get a turbo timer because its hard just to adjust to sitting in the car several minutes. I need to hook up the intercooler cause the intake pipe gets hot. Other than that no other problems. I'll make the 3hr drive back home tommmorow. Cant wait to take some friends for a spool around the block.

Yeah fuel pump came out just like you said (made obvious since once I got working on it). I'm pretty sure I've got some boost leak around where I made a metal plate to cover the BOV flange (flimsy brass plate) so I'll be interested to see how well it runs with the BOV (all I need to do is relocate the flange). I'll take pics when I get home.

good job. in reference to the sound - I drove my buddy around the block with the exhaust completely off except the d/p and he said it sounded pretty dahm good. This was a shock coming from this guy(owns a 65 chevelle) because he hates the sound of 4 bangers. He has heard the 4g63 exhaust(d/p only too) and he thinks that our motors sound sooooooo much CrIsPeR and MeAnEr. Needless to say, he approved of my little sleeper 'rs'.
