43318, NOS NEWBIE SETUP QUESTION..(kinda long)
Posted by 337eclipse, Nov-14-01 05:28 PM
hello all,

I own a 96 eclipse RS coupe sports package with AUTO tranny.
I have 98,000 miles on it..timming belt changed, fuel filter, change oil every 3grand..very well maintained. im running:
Greddy headers, Greddy SP cat-back, AEM CAI, AFX pulley, AFX front motormount, Nology wires. I plan on gettting another car soon and would like to keep this car as a weekend car.
I would love to put a 50 shot on and maybe a new bored AFX throttle body...
NOW to my questions: how much would a complete
50 shot for my car cost? with installation, guages, extra fuel,etc..?
Should I take off any MODS or add anymore?
Should I tune up my TRANNY?
Should I tune up my engine, check cyclinders?
Thanks to all who have patience with my questions..LEE

Good start. . .

Lucky bastard! ;-)

I would go 75 shot but that's just me. Our cars will handle a 75 shot with out problems.

Most kits are $500 and come with a few different shot sizes. Howell automotive sells the Nitrous Works kit for $439 . . . http://howell.mountain.net/Avenger/AvnegerNitrous.htm
You can install it yourself with the help from some of us on the board it's pretty simple. Our cars HAVE to use a wet shot. The 95's don't but 96-99 does. The wet kit adds fuel when you spray. You don't NEED anything else but you CAN get a bottle heater, gauges for the drivers, remote bottle valves, purge kits, etc. . .

If you want to add anything, get the 55mm TB, Get your intake manifold ported, Get an ignition system so you can retard the timing and run a higher shot. An intank fuel pump would good to insure there is enough fuel pressure.

From what I have heard the auto is pretty tough. There is a company called Level 10 that makes performance upgrades for the auto tranny eclipse.

I would run a compression test to make sure you don't have bad rings or valves. Keep an eye on the plugs, don't let them foul out on you. I change my plugs every 5,000 - 6,000 miles because they are cheap so what the hell.

No problem, don't hesitate to ask anything else either :)

Sounds like my old mods (different brands) except mines a 5sp. It should fly on nitrous (and my car wasn't nearly as well taken care of).

F*ck it go AT LEAST 75hp if its a weekend car ( I'd do 100hp direct port personally if I had another car I was driving during the week).

TB optional of course but why not. Got one of those too.

Figure about $500 for the kit, $80 for the cheapest autometer elec fuel pressure gauge and $50 for the AF gauge. Hell add another $50 for a nitrous pressure gauge (you can have it installed at the bottle or underhood). No extra fuel required for a measly 50hp shot. It will probably last forever with a 50hp shot. Installation will probably run somewhere between $200 and $250 although you could likely do it yourself (and thats when you find out how much of a rip off nitrous installs are).

Get an ignition system before the TB otherwise pretend its normally aspirated as you go along (which it is 95% of the time). Get a bottle heater too if you want consistant performance in anything but summer weather.

> Should I tune up my
>TRANNY?

Like what? Any auto tuning is gonna cost an arm and leg. might as well wait for it to break first. If it doesn't break then you didn't need it.

> Should I tune up my
>engine, check cyclinders?

At 98K miles a compression test would be wise 1rst.
Just some new 6 (stock)range plugs (for a 50hp shot) and wires. General maintenence as usual.
