42524, 10.5:1 compression and Nitrous
Posted by Nitrous_RS1997, Jan-24-02 05:35 AM
My friend has a 97 GS, and he is in the process of getting the howell rebuild kit, with the 10.5:1 compression(he wont be going turbo). he wants to run a 100-shot of nitrous with a direct port kit. now, i ran that big of a shot, but my pistons are stock compression. with the upped compression, will this still be ok? i told him he would need a different fuel pump with the higher compression and nitrous, along with all the normal stuff(colder plugs, new wires, moderate use) can you think of anything im leaving out or any reason why the compression and nitrous wont work out? thanks for any opinions.

He may want to get larger injectors just to be safe.

also he'd really want to get an ignition. i'd reccommend Crane Fireball. just my personal taste.

wouldnt bigger injectors drown the car during normal driving though? i would think the "wet kit" nature of the DP kit would take care of the fuel needs wit ha bigger fuel pump to supply it. or would you need bigger injectors just to run 10.5:1 compression period?

you'll need to pull out timing just as you would a high boost turbo if you were running 10.5 compression.

Our ECU can adjust to larger injectors up to a certain size. You could go up to the Accel 24 lb injectors and a Walbro intank pump just to be safe. If you go too large on the injectors you may run in to richness and bogginess at lower rpms.

Stan...is the only way to pull timing on our cars to send the ECU off to have it programmed that way? also, with 10.5:1 compression, whats the highest shot you would use(on a fully built bottom end) with out having to pull timing? thanks a lot.

Any aftermarket ignition can pull timing.

what he said as far as pulling timing. Well I dont think I'd go much beyond the 70hp shot I did. maybe 75hp.

really? what would the jump in compression to 10.5:1 do for horsepower alone? like a 10-15 hp jump?
42534, RE: 10.5:1 compression and Nitrous

each point increase of compression is only worth a smudge over 3%. So from 9.6 to 10.6 on a 140hp engine would be good for about 4hp. Of course on a 300hp engine it would be 9hp. Still hardly worth risking detonation. I couldnt feel the difference between 9.6 and 10.6.

what jet size will i need for a 75shot or 125shot??
and what shot would it be 34nos and 22fuel???

I have been hearing about the gains with higher compression pisonts, and on Honda's, thay are better than 3%, more like 6%. On Preludes, when the compression is upped from 10:1 to 12:1. about 30hp is gained, so thats about 15HP per point, not bad. Also, nitrous is not boost, detonation is not as big of a problem because of the cooling ability nitrous has. I would up the compression if you are staying with nitrous. As for the shot of nitrous, on a completely rebuilt bottom end, 225 shots with a progressive controller, but most people dont do a complete rebuild, if you doing only forged pistons, rods, and gaskets, probably a 125shot should be safe.

Big difference in a VTEC 2.2L prelude and our 2.0L

Also, nitrous is not boost, detonation is not as
>big of a problem because of the cooling ability nitrous has.

Yeah, tell that to guys that blew there engines cause they had the same attitude about nitrous and see what they have to say. You HAVE to be careful using nitrous because you can easily fuck up the engine if you don't take the correct precautions.

> I would up the compression if you are staying with nitrous.

YEAH RIGHT! YOU WOULD BLOW UP THE SECOND YOU HIT IT! There is a guy here with a COMPLETELY BUILT mustang that is over 6.0L at this point and he is only running a 200 shot.

but most
>people dont do a complete rebuild, if you doing only forged
>pistons, rods, and gaskets,

What else is needed for a complete rebuild? That is all there really is in the bottom end to rebuild unless you are talking about a custom forged crank which isn't even available.

Thats why I said a pregressive controller is needed, to bring the nitrous on over a persiod of time. Of course you have to take the proper precautions with nitrous, but you can up the compression, and run NOS. Of course you may have to use racing gas when spraying. There is more to a completely rebuilt engine than just pistons and rods, yes, a forged crank is one thing, so if thats not evailable, then you may be limited to a smaller amount, studs are another thing, having the proper head work done, the engine needs to be balanced and blue printed, and probably some more things I cant think of. I would bet that the 420a can handle 150shots with everything done to the engine thats available. I know the H22 in my Lude can Handle 200+ with a complete rebuild, so I would guess the 420a can handle a similar amount.
