4105, Well I'm Boosting! (very long)
Posted by Jeff_99gs, Apr-22-01 04:23 AM
The install went really smoothly. It took a bit longer than I had anticipated..mostly because of little things like fabricating a bracket for the cruise control and installing a GS-T rear sway bar at the same time. For those who don't know, I now sport a HRC stage 1 turbosystem.

We managed to break my O2 sensor taking the downpipe off, so that cost me 93 dollars...which sucked. Oh well.....

Some impressions:

1. WOW :D
2. Man that fuel pump is LOUD!!!!! I feel like I'm riding in a space shuttle. I need to find my code for my stereo to get it working again....I want to make sure the pump isn't louder than my music!
3. WOW!!!!
4. I am running about 3 1/2 psi right now. I thought it couldn't go below 5, but I was wrong. I will up the boost to 5 after a few days, and after I remount the FPR.
5. 3 1/2 psi and still this fast......WOW!!!!! :D
6. I ended up putting my EGT probe in the downpipe because the idea of it falling into my turbo scared me. Plus it was easier to put it there, and I knew it would fit.
7. I am around 1100-1150 degrees at WOT. This sound right? I know add 200 degrees since it is in the dp, so that is 1300-1350 at 3 1/2 psi. From what I gathered, this is ok?
8. I broke the tires loose when leaving the shop and something AMAZING happened!!!!!!!!! NO WHEELHOP!!! AHAHAHAHA!!!! the tires just squealed for a good 5 seconds and I was off. ( heh...then the cop that was coming down the street to my right at the traffic light followed me for a good 10 minutes before turning off. I was somewhat nervous.)
9. Its not every day you get to see your own crank :D and it was a beautiful sight.
10. I was refering to my crankshaft in number 9.
11. The crankshaft in my engine you pervert.
12. When I was driving home my legs were shaking like crazy and my face hurt from that damn infamous grin.
13. I raced a friend in a modded ESi a few times on the drive home. (he has CAI, GS-T muffler, some other stuff I forgot, and he's a really good driver. his fastest is 16.01) I am faster...but I need more than 3 1/2 psi, because I didn't win by nearly as much as I would of liked. I need a cat-back too. The spool-up time is around 3k rpm...
14. The only "problems" with the HRC kit was that the blue oil drain line was too short. We had to make a new line from A/C hose. The plastic vacuum line that came with the boost gauge is really short. It barely fits through the hole I made in the steering boot and up to the gauge on the a pillar. We had to make the diameter of the stock downpipe where we cut it smaller to fit inside the downpipe that was supplied with the kit. Good thing we had some really cool air tools to do this.
15.The cruise control and FPR was definitely the most tedious part of the install. It took the longest of any other part of the installation. There must be an easier way of doing this...
16. I took 24 pictures through the whole procedure and I will have them on my webpage as soon as I get them developed.
17. Everything fit perfectly. (other than the FPR) I am very impressed with the quality parts of the Hahn turbosystem, the directions, and the final results. Even the people who were helping me install it said it was a great quality product and they would absolutely recommend it to anyone with a 420a. I'd like to thank Bill for his efforts and reasearch on a great product for a great engine.
18. A few things I need to buy now: I need a catch can/breather for the crankcase. Right now I have a tube running from there down towards the bottom of the engine till I can get one. I need to get OEM bushings and brackets for the GS-T sway bar. it is loose and the exhaust piping hits the bar when I apply gas. I need to get an electronic Fuel Pressure Gauge to safely monitor the fuel pressure while driving. And I need a digital A/F gauge. (thanks Corbin) Hopefully that will work out.
19. Oh yeah.... WOW!!!! I am looking forward to just hitting 5psi now :D and hopefully it will be intercooled by the shootout if I can find some money in my couch or something.

Well I guess thats it for now. Sorry for writing a book, its just really exciting, and you just want to talk about it forever :) I was late to work today because I decided to show a friend the engine....man having a turbo is going to get me in so much trouble :D

Thats all for now...

Only 3.5psi ? I had the same thing but I think it was the gauge, because it sat at -1 to -2 with the car off and also with the gauge out of the car. I adjusted the gauge and now it hits 5psi like it should and sits at 0 with the car off.

What do you have to do with the cruise control? I never heard of anything happening with the cruise control? The turbo should have nothing to do with that right?

I had the toughest time with that too. It's simple once you know how to do it. I emailed Chris, Joe and Corbin a lot regarding this at thae time I was doing the install as well.

Finally, you realize how.

1. Completely take apart the cruise control assembly from it's bracket as it sits in the engine bay.

2. Leave the conical C/C on the upper bracket and leave the lower bracket in its stock location.

3. With the C/C on its upper brack, move it downard from its stock location to a lower mouting point directly below. There shoudl be several holes present at the bottom of the engine bay on the passenger side facing the engine. Use one of those holes to mount the upper bracket of the C/C assembly.

4. Use the lower bracket still sitting in its stock location to mount the FPR. Use the bracket supplied to provide more mounting space for the FPR.

There ya have it!

Good luck!

Now if you were mounting the VORTEC SFMU...you would have much much more trouble mounting it...cause it's so damn huge!!! (1.5 time bigger than the BELL)

Is the fuel pump that loud? Louder than a CAI? Is it loud all the time or just when boosting?

It's loud all the time. Like louder than road noise loud. Like people look at you when stopped at a light cause they think your cars gonna blow up loud. The only negative about the entire kit. God I love boost. :7

Yep..its REALLY loud. It hisses on the outside, and on the inside it sounds like a loud hum. But I have to agree.....I do love boost.

I had no trouble with the size of the drain hose or the location of the hole in the oil pan. I heard people talking about some of the stuff being too short but I didn't see any of these problems with my kit. The only problem I had with the blue hose was putting it on the fitting without any lube, while screwing around with the kit when it first came in. It was a pain to get it off or on :) As a note to others, lube everything!

Jeff: I am pleased to hear of your experience with our system. My continued wishes for good luck are with you! Should you need anything, call our Tech Support line, open daily from 1-5PM: 630-801-9065.

You and a couple of others have mentioned a short oil drain hose, while others have not run into this. After reading this thread, I investigated the length we were sending by measuring the hose on our RS. I was puzzled to find that what is on the RS and what we are sending is the same!

I thought about it for a bit, and can only come up with this: for those whose hoses are too short, where on the oil pan have you drilled the hole for the fitting and o-ring washer? Perhaps you have installed the fitting too far towards the driver's side. Let me know, will you? As it has happened more than once, we may have a line or two in our instructions that can be improved if this is the case.

From what I can remember, the directions said to drill under the 3rd hole on the left of the pan from the front side (something like that, it was somewhat confusing). Either way, it is an inch down from the top and works perfectly the way it is now set up, so I am not too worried about it. I took a ton of pics of the entire procedure...if you would like, I can send some your way.

Bill,

The instructions for the hole drilling are actually a bit confusing. I wasn't sure which "3rd hole from the side" to drill the drain line hole. I did call in and order more blue hose from you guys.

After we installed the actual Turbo, we realized that the we used the wrong "3rd hole", so obviously I needed more hose. BTW the current hole works fine.

What you might wanna do is show a diagram of the whole oil pan and then a "zoomed in" diagram like the one on page 3.

I remember now, what made us doubt about putting the hole from the other side (i.e. 3rd from the right) was that it looked mightly close to the crank...

Hope this helps

Oh and, in my opinion, good diagrams are way better than photos, as black and white photos sometimes get confusing.

And while this brings back memories, I realize that I have never told you this before: Please thank Mrs. Lori Hahn, because if it wasn't for her good business etiquette I would have cancelled the whole turbo kit order...

Bill,

I experienced the SAME problems these two are and I couldn't agree more with what they have said.

I also recommend much better instructions for the cruise control relocation. (more akin to mine wiht nice pics, NOT hard-to-see photos with perspectives that are difficult to identify with) :-)

That's great stuff, guys. I've been wondering about that short hose question for a bit, and it looks like we have discovered the answer. I will get a photo of the oil pan to accompany the drawing in the instructions, and add to the text as well. If anyone has a photo they would like to provide, it would be most appreciated.

Jason: I will look at the cruise instructions. I'll be dropping you an email on this.

Guy: I will pass along your praise to Lori. At times, she has the unenviable position of working with customers when we are late on delivery, etc. I don't know what I would do without her!

Well here is the picture I took of the oil drain hose and where we tapped it into the oil pan.

3 screws from the left side of the front of the pan. I used black A/C hose in place of the blue hose. This most likely won't be a help in the instructions if it is in the wrong place.

No problem Bill, (I got your email)
and yes Jeff, that's precisely where my drain line is situated. I't about the flattest place and most sensical too, IMO. Also, the oil drain pan only has 5 bolts across the front therefore placing the drain pipe at that location, I think. (not sure)

Thanks for posting that picture Jeff. I hope my cruise contol relocation instructions/tips helped. If not, don't hesitate to email me!
