I was just wondering how many of you guys have your air filter connected straight to the turbo without that little intake pipe in between? Is it giving any problems when the turbo gets really hot? Does the silicon part of the air filter melt? And who has their manual boost controller feeding off the vacuum source between the intake mani and blow off valve? If you guys did that, what did you use to cap off that little nipple that was connected to the wastegate actuator. I used a little valve cap and it keeps popping off.

i have the air filter right on the turbo and there will be no problems, a lot of people run it that way, and have never had any probs. i also have a vacuum "nipple" on the compressor side of the turbo housing and i got it to stay on there by using a small worm clamp. i havnt had any probs with it yet. :thumbsup

Does that actually yield in a performance gain? If the part of the filter that attaches to the intake pipe is only for example 3", would it matter if the filter was right on the turbo or if it was connected to a straight 3" pipe? Wouldnt the airflow be the same?

mine is attached to the turbo. it doesn't melt.

theres no performance gain, but it usually gets rid of bov flutter...worked for me :thumbsup

yeah I think I'm about to hack off that intake pipe from hahn. Make it a little shorter. Engine bay just looks more agressive with the filter right off the turbo. Hey so T'ing off the boost controller from the BOV get's rid of the flutter? I liked that flutter. My BOV would make 3 different sounds around the same time. The swoooosh,zoooooomp and flutter. It's true, sounds loud and very different. People are always like wtf?

isnt the flutter sign of compressor surge?

i'm pretty sure flutter means your blow off valve spring is set too tight. guess the air builds up to a certian pressure then it escapes, then it's not enough to open the valve, then it builds up and escapes, and does it a few times while there is full vacuum on the other side of the BOV. guess the spring overcomes the vacuum signal and forces the BOV closed more. right...? or am i drunken?

your right, but that doesnt solve the problem on all bov's. many have removed the pipe and it got rid of the flutter, sumthin about the sound not being amplified through the pipe but it is still actually there or some shit. check the archives i remember a post about it like a year ago.

I've ruined 2 K&N's since I made the intake pipe 3" long. Basically the filter is right next to the compressor and the clamp area on the filter just disintegrates. I'll be fabbing up a CAI for it soon.

i would suggest against putting the filter directly on the turbo. other than the melting off problem, you have to deal with the turbo sucking in the hot air from the radiator fan. that is not good! I made a pretty nice CAI for my system out of the existing hrc pipe and 2 3" 90degree bends. i'll take some pics later and post them. the cai works really good from the data logger i have seen gains by as much as 40 degrees F lower intake temps as apposed to mounting the filter directly to the turbo.
