Just a question about driving during break-in on a built 420a...

I have ~525 miles on my motor so far (~125 of them this morning from just drving around, heh)...

Spring Break is in 1 week. Home is ~300 miles south via the turnpike

Ive been avoiding highways altogether so far, and havent seen over 4000rpms or 60mph. Also been trying to avoid extended driving at a single speed to aid break-in

Question is, how soon is highway driving "ok"?

Even if its better to go 60 in the slow lane, how soon is sustained speed for long periods ok?

Well if the rings aren't seated now, they won't anymore than this. I would feel safe riding the highways now.

Yeah, what ^ Kyle said. If you feel like it, just drive slower than usual and vary your engine rpm's instead of throwing on cruise control and going straight....

in the first 500 miles is it better to stay under 4k and 60mph?i know that u should not go into boost alot but i was just wondering?

Opinions vary...

yeah...i'd really like to have some closure on this topic. some say to run it hard for the first couple miles to seat the rings(someone posted within the last few weeks, that they broke in their engine this way), and some say to gradually go easy for 1000 miles. how are stock, brand new engines broken in? they have to be broken in somehow, but they don't have 1000 miles to do it.

This is CONSTANTLY a topic over at Tamparacing.com There are a LOT of tuners over there that say GET ON IT right away, and some that say be conservative. It's always being discussed and no one ever comes to a final answer. I don't think anyone ever will.

Ive heard that it is good to get on it once you first get your new block too. That is what I did, ran mine hard as soon as I got it back from the dealer (spun bearing). Also when I got on the highway (I had to for work) I would just vay the rpms by shifting between 4th and 5th every min or so. Tedious, but I think it works. Ive got compression #'s around 220-225 in all my cylinders and that was with a leaky tester. :thumbsup My only fear now is when I actually boost this thing how will such high compression and 8 psi work together.
