Ok I just got done with the rebuild a week ago. The car cranked up and idled smooth as glass.Checked all the fluids and drove it home, about a mile and 1/2 down the highway (poking 3k all the way)it stalled when I was shifting I think so I let the clutch out and it started back up.I got home noticing a slight tick/tap coming from under the hood.I went to crank it up in the morning and there was a louder taping.I asked a couple of mechanics and they said drive it it will go away.So I put about 75 more miles on it and it gets louder (it gets quieter as it runs but changes all the time) and I've noticed that there is a noticable power loss(it skips going through the rpms like the car tugs).I was told it was the lifters and replace them 4 at a time now last night I replaced cyl # 1 and It got a little more quiet but the noise was still there and when I test drove it the power loss was even more evedent.and it was smoking because I have and oil leak somewhere on the motor by the crank leaking on the downpipe(Im guessing the oil pump is leaking due to the fact that anarobic sealer is broken which sucks cause I gotta pull the damn motor)but It looks like its possably coming from higher like maybe the head? I donno but this thing has pissed me off does any body have any ideas on the power loss thing thats what has me worried the most

Did you go through the breakin steps? Are your rings gapped correctly. What kind of pistons? What you could have been hearing is piston slap and Your rings havn't seated yet so that is why you are getting the smoke. Did you do a stock rebuild? We need more details...

I did a stock rebuild. The smoke is coming from the oil dripping on the downpipe.as far as being gapped no the machine shop put the pistons on the rings but from what I've herd you have to gap them when you put them in the block. The noise is what concerns me the most its strange its loud when you first start the car and dies a little bit but sometimes gets louder.I've been told lifters and I've been told pistons slapping the valves.I've pulled the valve cover off and ran it and saw that the oil was squirting on the exhaust cam pretty good and not so good on the intake cam.now is it possiable that the power loss is coming from the lifters not pumping up thus not opening enough and causeing noise from not enough oil preasure and leaking out the head down the back of the block?just a thought.or could my timeing belt jumped a tooth? The car idles ok but not as smooth as when we first cranked it.The car has about 130miles on it and Ive noticed the power loss through the 2-3k rmps the most but theres still no power above that even at 5k (thats as high as I'm willing to go with that few of miles and I'm still leary of that high)but at first it was just tapping but no real power loss just jittery through 2-3k but after a drive for about 15 miles strait I started to notice it lossing power more and more and a little louder tapping.

I'm sorry but I just gotta ask cause I've actually seen some one do this. Did you install the head gasket? ....... properly? If so did you torque the head bolts TO SPECS? and to specs meaning actually used a torque wrench? Do a compression test on your cylinders. you may be able to find your problem. Of course Throwing money at the engine may fix it but it may be after you rebuild the engine completely instead or just replacing a $100 part instead of blindly replacing item till it goes away.

Ok I just hooked up a summit oil preasure gauge I T'ed it off of the turbo oil line(no not the drain tube)alls I'm getting is 17 psi, smoke is now comming from the tailpipe like crazy! Im guessing the oilpump is shot,(could that be why the car stalled out while I was driving home and it has just has been tearing itself up slowly causing the lifters not to work killing the power?) But what really bugs me the most is its a new pump.I also got check engine code 43.How can I diagnose this better?Do I get to pull the damn motor out of the car again or can I just pull the pump off?THis project is turning out to be nothing but a big P.I.T.A.!
